Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with the exact warning YouTube shows and its timestamp. Match that warning to the relevant FFmpeg output and YouTube ingest setting before changing anything: an ingest warning identifies a symptom or configuration category, not necessarily its root cause. An Indian VPS location alone does not prove a bad route, packet loss, congestion, or a YouTube-side fault.
1. Preserve the warning and the matching FFmpeg evidence
In YouTube Live Control Room, note the warning text, when it appeared, whether it persists or repeats, and any viewer symptoms such as buffering, missing audio or video, or failure to start. YouTube displays warnings alongside stream health with timestamps; unresolved errors may recur. Its API health issue type can also help categorize the report. YouTube’s stream health and error guidance explains warning categories and remedies.
Save the FFmpeg output and the exact command or configuration that was running at that time. Remove stream keys, passwords, and other secrets before sharing logs. Record the FFmpeg build/version, input type, selected video encoder, output muxer and protocol, observed frame rate and bitrate, and whether processing is keeping pace with real time. These are diagnostic observations, not proof that a particular setting or VPS is at fault.
2. Match the warning category before adjusting settings
YouTube’s warning categories cover format and codec, bitrate, audio/video stream counts and properties, frame rate, keyframe/GOP, resolution, and primary/backup stream mismatches. Use the warning text to focus your check rather than changing unrelated options. YouTube’s warning reference describes these categories.

Format, codec, and container
Compare FFmpeg’s output codec, profile, and container with the ingest configuration selected for this stream. YouTube’s error guidance specifies H.264/AAC settings, with supported audio alternatives where specified; do not assume a generic command’s defaults match your selected configuration. The available controls vary by encoder implementation, so check the documentation and options for the actual encoder in your installed FFmpeg build. FFmpeg codec documentation describes encoder-specific options.
Bitrate and connection capacity
Compare the actual encoder bitrate with the setting for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s published H.264 examples are:

| Video mode | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p at 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not performance guarantees. Other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations may have different figures. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the configuration you selected. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection.
Frame rate, keyframes, and GOP
Check frame rate and keyframe interval together. YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Its warning guidance illustrates that at 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames. YouTube’s API health documentation identifies open GOP as unsupported. YouTube’s settings and warning guidance and its Live Streaming API health-status documentation provide the applicable detail; confirm the current requirement for your chosen stream configuration.

Resolution, stream count, and audio
Verify that the outgoing dimensions match the resolution selected in YouTube Ingestion Settings and that the ingest contains the expected video stream. For an audio warning, check whether audio is present and inspect its stream count, channel count, codec, sample rate, and bitrate against the selected ingest settings.
Primary and backup stream mismatch
If you configured dual ingestion, compare the primary and backup streams’ resolution, codecs, profiles, bitrate, frame rate, GOP/keyframe interval, and audio properties. YouTube requires matching settings for failover; a mismatch can trigger a warning even when one stream appears healthy.

3. Separate input, encoding, and delivery problems
If YouTube reports that it is receiving too little video, the warning describes a delivery symptom rather than naming the upstream cause. YouTube’s API describes videoIngestionStarved as: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” Google’s Live Streaming API health-status documentation lists the issue type.
- Check the input at the warning time. Confirm that FFmpeg is still receiving frames or data from the source rather than waiting, reaching the end of an input, or encountering read errors.
- Check encoder progress. Look at FFmpeg’s progress output and logs to see whether encoding is keeping pace with real time and whether frame production has stalled.
- Check output activity. Look for write errors, connection resets, reconnects, or pauses in output activity that coincide with the YouTube timestamp.
- Measure the VPS upload path. Run a suitable upload-capacity test from the VM and compare the result with the chosen stream bitrate, leaving practical headroom. YouTube recommends an upload bitrate test, but its guidance does not prescribe one universal headroom multiplier.
- Change one relevant variable at a time. If capacity or encoding pace is inadequate, test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, then observe whether the same warning returns.
YouTube recommends testing the stream before an event and monitoring stream health and messages while it is running. A result from another machine or time cannot establish the VPS’s path during the warning.

4. Check RTMPS when symptoms point to connection or TLS
For a connection error, verify that FFmpeg is using the rtmps protocol and a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and path on port 443, with TLS and SNI set for the server hostname. YouTube’s RTMPS guide says, “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.” It also associates invalid certificates with checking the protocol, endpoint, port, and TLS/SNI handling; a timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to a server expecting RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion requirements, last updated September 14, 2026.
5. What the Indian VPS location does—and does not—tell you
The region label does not reveal the route from the VM to YouTube, the network’s congestion at a particular time, or whether packets were lost. No provider-specific measurements establish a general India-wide ingest problem. Correlate the warning with the VM’s own upload test, FFmpeg logs, and connection behavior; contact your VPS provider if those observations point to a host or network issue. The warning alone is not grounds to buy networking hardware or assume a YouTube fault.
6. Common warning patterns and the next check
| What you see | First checks |
|---|---|
| Format or codec warning | Compare output codec, profile, container, and audio codec with the selected YouTube ingest settings. |
| Bitrate warning or unstable delivery | Compare actual output bitrate with YouTube’s setting for the selected codec and video mode; measure upload capacity from the VPS. |
| Frame-rate, keyframe, or GOP warning | Check frame rate and keyframe interval together; verify two-second keyframes, the four-second maximum guidance, and closed GOP behavior. |
| Resolution, audio, or stream-count warning | Compare dimensions and stream counts, then inspect the relevant audio properties. |
| Primary/backup mismatch | Compare all video and audio settings on both inputs; YouTube requires them to match for failover. |
