A live stream being interrupted for copyrighted footage does not, by itself, determine whether its archived video (VOD) can still be watched. The VOD must exist, and its current visibility depends on any restriction applied to it. YouTube handles live-stream enforcement and claims on an archived stream at separate stages.
What happens to a stream and its VOD
- While the stream is live: YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may display a placeholder and warn the creator to stop using the content. If the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- After the stream ends: If the creator archives the broadcast, YouTube says Content ID claims on that archive are made after the live stream is complete. A live interruption does not, on its own, establish what will happen to the archive.
- If a claim applies: The claimant’s policy may block the archive, monetize it, or track it. A block can apply worldwide or only in specified countries or regions. The result may therefore differ depending on where the viewer is.
- If no archive exists: There is no YouTube VOD to view. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a separate local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
How to check whether this VOD is viewable
- Open the video in YouTube Studio and check its visibility and restriction details.
- Review the claim information for wording such as “Blocked worldwide” or “Blocked in some countries or regions.” If the block is regional, a viewer’s location affects whether they can watch. YouTube explains claim outcomes in Learn about copyright claims.
- Confirm that the notice is a Content ID claim rather than a copyright removal request. A Content ID claim can block, monetize, or track a video. A valid copyright removal request removes the video and gives the channel a copyright strike. YouTube describes removals in Troubleshoot video removals.
- Use only the actions available for that specific notice. If you believe a claim is wrong, YouTube offers a dispute process for creators who believe they have the necessary rights. Do not dispute without a valid basis: YouTube warns that the claimant may respond by requesting removal.
Content ID claim or copyright takedown?
| Notice | What it can mean for the video | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | The claimant’s policy may block, monetize, or track the video; a block may be worldwide or limited by territory. | Read the claim and restriction details in YouTube Studio. |
| Copyright removal request | A valid request removes the video and gives the channel a copyright strike. | Read the removal notice and the available Studio actions. |
A Content ID claim and a takedown are not interchangeable. Nor does disputing a claim guarantee that a video will become viewable or that a strike will be reversed. The outcome depends on the specific notice and its current status.
Can a fair-use argument make the VOD viewable?
Not automatically. YouTube says automated Content ID cannot decide fair use; fair use is subjective and depends on the circumstances, with courts making that determination. If you dispute a claim, do so only if you have a valid reason and believe you have the necessary rights. Read YouTube’s fair-use guidance.
Preventing the loss of a recording
If keeping a copy matters, make a separate local recording rather than relying solely on YouTube’s archive. YouTube recommends a local backup, particularly because streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Optional external storage can hold that recording, but it does not unblock a YouTube VOD or change a copyright restriction.
