Combat is skill-dependent, and the game’s publisher says each style has its own moves and combos. Start with basic attacks and defense; add feints, clinches, combos and other techniques as you become comfortable.
Start by learning one weapon style
Different weapon styles are not interchangeable. Deep Silver describes each as having its own moves and combos, so build familiarity with the style you intend to use instead of expecting one universal approach to combat. Choose a weapon whose attacks and defensive options you are willing to practice, and learn those before trying to chain advanced techniques.
There is no source-supported ranking that makes one weapon type the best choice for every encounter. Your familiarity and skill matter, and weapon balance can also change with updates.
Practice combat techniques one at a time
A useful learning sequence is to establish your basic attack and defense first, then work on one advanced technique at a time. A combat guide published by RPG Division on 2025-02-04 separates the following subjects, making them a practical checklist of skills to understand:

- Basic strikes and feints: Get comfortable attacking, then practice disguising an attack with a feint.
- Interception attacks: Learn this as a separate option rather than treating every exchange as a basic strike.
- Clinch fighting: Practice recognizing and handling clinches as their own part of an encounter.
- Combos: Work on your weapon style’s combinations after you understand its basic attacks.
- Master strikes: Treat these as a distinct technique to learn, not as a substitute for understanding defense.
- Defense: Give defensive timing deliberate practice alongside offense.
The guide’s chapter list confirms that these subjects are covered, but it does not establish that any one technique is always optimal or provide verified controller inputs. Use the game’s own prompts and training opportunities for the exact controls in your version.
Change your approach for shields and tougher opponents
Shield opponents merit specific attention: the combat guide treats them separately from general defense. Similarly, it distinguishes fighting with a lower-skill or higher-skill weapon against tough enemies. That is a reminder to account for your weapon and proficiency when choosing how to approach a difficult opponent, not evidence that switching weapons guarantees an advantage.

When an exchange feels difficult, avoid adding several unfamiliar techniques at once. Focus on reading the opponent and applying one skill you have practiced, then reassess before changing your approach.
Expect group fights to be a different challenge
Fighting several opponents is not simply the same problem as fighting one. The combat guide gives group combat its own topic, but its available description does not establish a precise positioning formula or a guaranteed crowd-control tactic. Do not count on one trick to make being outnumbered easy; practice your defense and weapon handling before relying on them in a group encounter.

Keep weapons in usable condition
Equipment upkeep is part of combat preparation, not a separate afterthought. Deep Silver’s official game page states, “Weapon care is critical.” Check and maintain your weapons so their condition does not become an avoidable weakness when a fight begins.

Patch 1.4 offers a dated example of why old weapon advice may not apply unchanged. Its official notes say the Infantryman polearm perk adds +5 polearm weapon skill while wielding a polearm in combat and reduces enemy defense, making enemies less likely to perfect block, riposte or execute master strikes. This describes the Patch 1.4 change; it should not be treated as a guarantee about the current build or as proof that polearms are universally strongest.
