OBS YouTube Live Bitrate Settings for 720p at 30 FPS Loop Streams

For OBS 720p30 YouTube loops, use 1280×720, 30 fps, CBR and 2-second keyframes. Set bitrate to 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265, then test stream health.

For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube loop stream in OBS, set the output to 1280×720 at 30 fps, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Choose the bitrate for the codec YouTube receives: 8 Mbps recommended for H.264, or 6 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are YouTube’s 720p30 recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain a stable stream.

Recommended OBS settings for a 720p30 YouTube stream

Setting Recommended value
Output resolution 1280×720
Frame rate 30 fps
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds
Video bitrate, H.264 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum
Video bitrate, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 6 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum
Stereo audio bitrate 128 Kbps
5.1 audio bitrate 384 Kbps

The bitrate figures are YouTube Help / Google’s codec-specific guidance for 720p at 30 fps, on a page accessed in 2026. Minimums are not the recommended targets. Use the values for the codec YouTube actually receives; do not apply the H.264 recommendation automatically to AV1 or H.265. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists the supported ingest options and rates.

Set the video output in OBS

  1. Open OBS and select Settings → Video.
  2. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the resolution OBS sends to YouTube; the base canvas can differ if your scene needs scaling.
  3. Set Common FPS Value to 30.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

OBS’s Studio Overview Guide explains that Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value control the stream’s output resolution and frame rate. If your source video is a different size or frame rate, OBS will scale or convert it to these output settings.

Set the streaming encoder and bitrate

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Output. If the Output Mode is set to Simple, switch it to Advanced to access the streaming controls.
  2. Open the Streaming tab. Choose an encoder that your OBS installation and hardware support, and that matches the codec you intend to send to YouTube.
  3. Set Rate Control to CBR.
  4. Set Bitrate to the recommendation for the ingest codec: 8000 Kbps for H.264, or 6000 Kbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. OBS commonly expresses bitrate in Kbps, while YouTube’s table uses Mbps.
  5. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 s. At 30 fps, that is 60 frames. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  6. Set the audio bitrate to 128 Kbps for stereo, or 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio if your production and ingest workflow use 5.1.
  7. Choose Apply, then OK.

Menu labels and encoder choices can vary with OBS version, operating system, and hardware. The figures above describe YouTube’s ingest guidance, not a claim that every encoder or computer supports every codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Follow the protocol and encoder options presented for your stream setup in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Does a loop stream need a lower bitrate?

No special bitrate is established for a loop, static scene, or unattended stream in YouTube’s published table. Its settings are organized by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so the ordinary 720p30 recommendation is the supported baseline. Low-motion video may encode differently in practice, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not quantify a loop-specific adjustment.

OBS notes that YouTube transcodes all ingested streams, including the source feed, so viewers can receive alternate playback formats. Transcoding does not compensate for an unstable source connection or incorrect encoder settings. OBS also recommends a consistent keyframe interval to support smooth changes between viewer quality options. See the OBS explanation of transcoding.

Test the upload before leaving a loop live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and connect OBS using the stream key for that stream. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
  2. Start a test broadcast in OBS using the intended loop, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio. Include representative motion and sound rather than testing only a static opening frame.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages while the test runs. Confirm that the stream is arriving at the expected quality and that no connection or encoder warning appears.
  4. Test under the same network conditions you expect during the actual long-running stream. If upload stability is poor, lower the bitrate and test again rather than assuming a nominal speed test guarantees uninterrupted delivery.
  5. Only rely on the setup for an unattended run after it has remained stable in a representative test.

YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate and advises previewing the stream and reviewing stream-health messages. OBS also strongly recommends testing before the first live stream. Your available upload capacity needs to sustain the chosen video bitrate plus audio and network overhead; the platform’s recommended bitrate is not a promise about your particular connection.

Troubleshoot common 720p30 stream problems

  • Stream health reports connection instability or dropped frames: Your connection may not sustain the selected bitrate consistently. Retest and reduce the bitrate in steps, checking stream health each time. Prefer a stable stream to a higher setting that repeatedly fails.
  • The received stream does not match the expected bitrate: Confirm the selected OBS encoder and the codec YouTube is receiving, then use that codec’s 720p30 recommendation. H.264 uses a different recommended bitrate from AV1 or H.265.
  • YouTube does not accept the encoder or ingest connection: Verify the encoder and RTMP/RTMPS options available in your OBS and YouTube setup. The official YouTube material lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but your installed software and workflow must support the option you select.
  • Viewers see quality changes or buffering despite the correct OBS values: Inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the source is arriving steadily. YouTube’s transcoding provides alternate playback formats but cannot fix an unstable ingest feed.
  • The scene looks soft or has the wrong frame rate: Recheck Settings → Video, especially Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value. Confirm that the stream is intended to be 1280×720 at 30 fps.
  • A loop is expected to recover automatically after a disconnect: The cited OBS and YouTube guidance covers ingest settings and testing, not unattended recovery or specific loop automation. Check the behavior of your chosen setup before relying on it for continuous operation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
