For an ordinary SDR video loop, use Rec. 709 color space, 8-bit output, and the color grade intended by the source. Do not enable HDR or boost saturation simply to make the picture look more vivid. Use HDR settings only when the footage is genuinely HDR and the entire encoding path is configured to preserve its HDR signal.
Recommended color settings for a 4K60 SDR loop
- Color space: Rec. 709.
- Bit depth: 8-bit SDR.
- Color adjustments: Preserve the source’s intended grade; avoid blanket saturation, contrast, or brightness changes.
- Signal interpretation: Make sure the encoder’s color settings match the source. A mismatch can make colors or brightness appear wrong even if the source file itself looks correct.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies “Color space: Rec. 709 for SDR” and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. These settings are for SDR; they do not mean every 4K60 stream should use HDR.
Set the full 4K60 live encoder configuration
Color settings are only one part of a stable, correctly interpreted stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these general settings for live streaming; confirm the codec and bitrate shown for your setup in YouTube Live Control Room, since table wording and columns can vary across localized results.

The bitrate figures are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations/range, not a guarantee that every encoder, network, or source will produce the same result. A loop with little motion may look clean at a lower bitrate than fast-moving footage, but do not disregard the platform’s codec-specific guidance without checking the resulting stream.

YouTube says its low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K streams use normal latency. A looping broadcast that prioritizes continuity over near-real-time interaction should account for that trade-off.
Rec. 709 or HDR for YouTube Live?
Choose based on how the footage was made, not on which option sounds higher quality. Converting ordinary SDR footage to an HDR output does not create genuine HDR detail and can misrepresent brightness or color.

For HDR, YouTube’s OBS walkthrough specifies an HEVC hardware encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; it recommends HLG in that workflow. The transfer function and metadata must describe the actual source signal. Do not copy these HDR settings onto an SDR loop.
YouTube’s HDR help guidance describes delivery over RTMP(S) or HLS and says HDR stream keys must have “Turn on manual settings” unchecked. Check YouTube’s current HDR instructions and the stream key configuration before starting, because the correct setup depends on the encoder and ingest path.

Check color before starting a long loop
- Confirm the source: Establish whether the video is SDR or genuinely HDR, and identify its intended color grade and signal metadata.
- Match the encoder: For SDR, select Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, use an HDR-compatible path and match primaries, matrix, transfer, codec, and bit depth to the source.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test: YouTube recommends testing before going live, including audio and movement similar to the intended stream.
- Inspect representative points in the loop: Check dark gradients, bright highlights, and saturated colors, as well as typical scenes. These checks are practical advice, not a YouTube-specified test protocol.
- Monitor stream health: Watch YouTube’s stream health during the event and verify playback on a display that supports the intended format.
Troubleshoot washed-out, oversaturated, or banded colors
- Colors look washed out or too dark: Check for an SDR/HDR mismatch or incorrect color signaling. Confirm the source type and ensure the encoder describes the signal accurately.
- Colors look unusually vivid: Check whether HDR was enabled for SDR footage or whether saturation was raised globally. Return to the source grade and its proper SDR or HDR path.
- Gradients show visible bands: Inspect the source and the encoded output, particularly dark gradients. For SDR, verify the recommended 8-bit Rec. 709 configuration; for HDR, verify the required 10-bit path and correct metadata.
- Playback differs between displays: Check that the display supports the stream’s format and compare the encoder’s signal configuration with the source. A display mismatch can affect what you see without proving the source itself is wrong.
- Stream quality or stability is poor: Confirm CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), and an ingest bitrate appropriate to the selected codec in YouTube’s current guidance. Monitor stream health and test the encoder/network before relying on a continuous broadcast.
Keep a YouTube loop running without leaving a PC on
For a do-it-yourself setup, run the encoder on a computer that stays powered and connected, configure the source-matched color and 4K60 settings above, and send the stream to YouTube using its stream key. YouTube’s encoder creation help also names Gyre as offering continuous broadcasts in 4K at 30/60 fps; that mention alone does not establish its color controls or current suitability for a particular workflow.
