If YouTube Live stops with “failed to connect to server — connection timed out,” first verify the stream URL and switch to YouTube’s current RTMPS URL if you are using plain RTMP. Then check that your encoder supports RTMPS. If those checks pass, inspect the encoder’s output and CPU load, test your outbound internet connection, and match the next step to what you find. A timeout alone does not identify one universal cause.
First, identify what stopped
Before changing settings, record the exact encoder error and when it appeared. A failure to connect at startup is different from a stream that connected and later lost its feed.
- Check whether the encoder still says it is sending.
- Check whether its local preview or recording still has picture and sound.
- Note what YouTube Live Control Room reports about the stream.
- Record whether the interruption happens immediately, after a consistent interval, or unpredictably.
This narrows the investigation, but none of these symptoms alone proves whether the cause is the URL, encoder, local network, ISP, or another issue.
Verify the YouTube ingest URL and protocol
For the explicit “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” error, YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says to verify the server URL, use RTMPS rather than plain RTMP, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
- Reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon beside the URL field.
- Copy that current URL into the encoder’s server or ingest URL field. Avoid relying on an old address saved in a profile.
- Confirm the encoder is configured for RTMPS and that it supports the protocol.
- Check that the stream key in the encoder is the key associated with the intended YouTube stream.
YouTube uses the stream key to accept the encoder feed. Its guidance suggests creating a new key and updating the encoder for certain startup errors, but that does not establish that every midstream timeout is caused by a key. Change the key when the error or setup evidence points to it, not as a blanket timeout fix.
If the error mentions an SSL certificate
An SSL certificate error is distinct from an ordinary connection timeout. YouTube additionally suggests checking the URL and trying port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration for that SSL-related case. Do not treat port 443 as a universal fix for all disconnects.

Check the encoder before changing stream quality
Update the encoder to a current version, then inspect its actual output, error log, and CPU load. If the local picture or sound is already broken, address the game capture, audio source, or encoder problem first; changing YouTube’s ingest settings will not repair a faulty local output.
- Local output is bad or encoder reports errors: troubleshoot the source and encoder, and consult the encoder’s logs or vendor support.
- Encoder is overloaded: reduce the work it must do, such as the encoding load or output settings, then test again.
- Local output and encoder status look healthy, but the stream is still impaired: test the outbound internet connection next.
Check the encoder’s selected server URL and stream key against the current values in Live Control Room as part of this inspection. Avoid rotating a key without a reason: it requires updating the encoder and can introduce a separate configuration failure.

Test the outbound connection and use sustainable settings
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing settings the available connection can sustain. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitor stream health while the test runs. If the connection test indicates a problem, YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider.
For reference, YouTube’s current encoder settings table recommends 10 Mbps and gives 5 Mbps as the minimum for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps. Those figures apply to that specific codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current table for your own combination rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. A recommended bitrate is not a guarantee against connection timeouts.

- Use CBR encoding.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use a supported video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. YouTube’s current guidance allows up to 60 frames per second.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together, based on the current YouTube table and a connection test.
If testing points to unstable Wi-Fi, trying a wired Ethernet connection can help determine whether the wireless link is involved. It will not resolve an ISP outage, incorrect URL, unsupported RTMPS, or encoder fault.

- Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream before the scheduled event, using the intended encoder profile and representative audio and motion.
- Watch both encoder status and YouTube Live Control Room stream health through the test.
- If the stream fails again, preserve the exact error and logs and note whether local output continued; use those details with the encoder vendor or YouTube’s report-a-problem route.
Stopping transmission from the encoder normally ends the stream; it is not a remedy for an unexpected midstream timeout. YouTube’s setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
