YouTube Live Stream Stops When OBS Says “Encoding Overloaded”: How to Check the Log

An OBS “Encoding overloaded” warning is only one clue. Learn how to distinguish encoder and rendering performance problems from connection drops, then test the fix against YouTube stream health.

An OBS “Encoding overloaded” warning is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. Check the final OBS log for the session and distinguish encoding lag or rendering lag from dropped frames and connection stalls before changing settings: each points to a different kind of problem.

What an “Encoding overloaded” warning does—and doesn’t—tell you

OBS can fall behind when it cannot encode frames quickly enough, but the warning alone does not prove that encoding caused the stream to stop. OBS needs GPU time both to encode and to composite and render scenes. GPU overload or a bottleneck between the GPU and the rest of the system can contribute, even if a game appears to run smoothly. A connection problem can also interrupt a stream, and it can happen at the same time as a performance problem.

OBS treats encoding performance problems and dropped frames or disconnections as separate troubleshooting categories. In its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide (dated June 12, 2021), OBS addresses performance and scene workload. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (dated September 30, 2024) describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as connection-to-ingest issues. Use the evidence in your log and YouTube’s stream-health messages to choose which path to investigate.

How to check the OBS log for the stopped session

  1. Find the final streaming session. In the OBS log, identify the session that ended at the time your YouTube stream stopped. Note its stop time and any nearby reconnect, shutdown, or error messages. A warning earlier in the log, without surrounding events, may not explain the interruption.
  2. Look for performance evidence. Encoding lag or skipped-frame messages suggest OBS or its encoder could not complete work in time. Rendering lag suggests OBS could not composite or render frames fast enough. Either can reflect limited available resources; the exact cause depends on your system and encoder.
  3. Look separately for connection evidence. Dropped frames attributed to connection stalls, reconnect attempts, or intermittent disconnections point toward the network path to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says a connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream.
  4. Check whether both kinds of evidence appear. An encoding warning does not rule out a network issue, and dropped frames do not rule out performance pressure. If the log shows both, address each category rather than treating the first warning as the sole cause.
  5. Compare the log with YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s warning or status message can add useful ingest-side context, but the title provides no specific health message to interpret. Consider the actual message alongside the OBS log rather than assuming what YouTube reported.

Match the evidence to the first fix

Evidence in OBS or YouTube What it suggests First actions
Encoding overload, encoding lag, or skipped frames Encoding work or available system resources may be the constraint; the log alone may not identify the precise cause. Close GPU-intensive programs; cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync; reduce output resolution or frame rate; simplify scenes, sources, filters, and browser sources. On Windows, OBS also suggests trying to run OBS as administrator.
Rendering lag OBS may not have enough GPU resources to composite or render the scene on time. Reduce competing GPU load and scene complexity. If necessary, lower output settings.
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnection The connection to the remote ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Check whether upload capacity is stable at your configured bitrate; try a lower bitrate or another server; check network software and drivers, the router, and Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is unstable, test a wired connection.
A YouTube stream-health warning YouTube is reporting an ingest or stream issue, but the exact meaning depends on the warning text. Read the message and compare it with the OBS log. Test before the event and monitor stream health while live.

These fixes follow OBS’s performance guidance and connection guidance. A network upgrade is not a direct fix for encoding lag, and a GPU upgrade is not established as necessary by an overload warning alone.

If the log points to encoding or rendering lag

Free GPU and system resources

Close other GPU-intensive programs, including another game running in the background or software doing GPU calculations. OBS also identifies expensive sources, filters, browser sources, and large scene collections as potential contributors. A scene that works while idle may become too costly when gameplay, browser overlays, and filters are active together.

Give OBS a predictable share of GPU time

If a game is using nearly all available GPU capacity, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync so it does not compete as aggressively with OBS. Test during the same gameplay and scene conditions that caused the problem; a desktop-only test may not reproduce the load.

Reduce the work OBS must finish each frame

Lowering the output resolution or frame rate reduces the amount of video work. Simplifying scenes and removing unnecessary sources or filters can reduce compositing and rendering load. Change one relevant setting at a time and repeat a representative test so you can tell which change helped.

If the log points to dropped frames or disconnection

Investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server rather than treating the event as proof of encoder overload. OBS lists trying a lower bitrate, changing servers, checking network software and drivers, and using wired networking when Wi-Fi is unstable as possible connection steps.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently, not merely one it reaches in a brief speed test. A lower configured bitrate may help when the upload path is unstable, but it does not resolve a separate encoding or rendering bottleneck.

Check YouTube encoder settings against the actual setup

YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page (accessed October 3, 2026) gives recommendations conditional on codec, resolution, and frame rate. It supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1; lists up to 60 fps; recommends CBR; and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Follow the applicable row for your codec and output rather than treating a single bitrate as universal.

Run a representative test before the next broadcast

  1. Set up the stream with the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and scenes you intend to use.
  2. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual event; a static scene does not exercise the same workload or connection conditions.
  3. Watch the OBS log for encoding or rendering lag and connection-related dropped frames. Note when any problem appears.
  4. Check YouTube stream health and messages during the test.
  5. Change one setting that matches the evidence, then repeat the test. Avoid changing bitrate, resolution, scenes, and network setup all at once, because that makes the result harder to interpret.

YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Encoder recommendations and platform settings can change, so consult its current guidance when configuring a future broadcast.

Common mistakes when a stream stops

  • Assuming the warning proves the cause: “Encoding overloaded” is a performance clue, not a complete account of why the stream ended. Check the session’s surrounding log messages.
  • Treating every interruption as a hardware problem: Dropped frames and connection stalls call for network investigation. The evidence does not establish that a GPU or encoder upgrade is required.
  • Using one bitrate rule for every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Match the applicable recommendation to the actual output and the capacity of the connection.
  • Changing several settings at once: Make a targeted change and retest under representative conditions so you can identify whether it addressed the observed problem.
  • Ignoring YouTube’s own health messages: Read the message and compare it with the OBS log; do not infer a specific warning when you do not have its text.

Or let it run in the cloud
