If YouTube says your FFmpeg loop is missing audio, first find out where the sound disappears: check the source, FFmpeg’s selected streams, the local output, and then YouTube’s received stream. A looped video can still be sent as video only if the file has no audio, the output maps only video, or audio is disabled. The exact fix depends on your command and source streams.
1. Confirm the source actually contains audio
Start with the exact file or input feeding FFmpeg. If a video file contains no audio stream, FFmpeg cannot recover sound that is not there. If your source is a live or external input rather than a file, verify that the audio signal reaches that input.
While the loop is running, check the local recording or archive as well as the source. YouTube recommends inspecting the source routed to the encoder and the local archive when a stream looks or sounds wrong (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting). If audio is absent in both the source and local output, troubleshoot the source before changing YouTube settings.
2. Trace FFmpeg’s input and output stream selection
Read the exact command from left to right. Identify every -i input and its index, then follow the output’s -map options. Without explicit mapping, FFmpeg selects streams automatically; with -map, the output includes only the mapped streams, with a possible exception for filtergraph outputs. As the FFmpeg documentation puts it: “When -map is used, only user-mapped streams are included in that output file, with one possible exception for filtergraph outputs described below.”

- If the output maps only video, it will not include audio from that input.
- If you map audio, make sure the mapping selects the intended audio stream from the intended input. Input indices and stream indices depend on your actual command and media; do not copy a mapping blindly.
- Look for
-an. Applied to an output, it disables audio selection for that output. As an input option, it blocks audio streams from filtering or selection.
Do not assume -stream_loop itself removes audio. FFmpeg documents it as an input option; -stream_loop -1 means to loop the input indefinitely. Check that it appears in the right place for the input it is meant to affect. FFmpeg’s options generally apply to the next specified input or output and reset between files.
3. Check the local FFmpeg output before changing YouTube settings
Listen to or inspect the locally recorded output from the same FFmpeg command you use for the stream. This divides the problem into two branches:

- No audio in the local output: return to the source, input selection,
-map,-an, filters, and encoding path. YouTube cannot receive audio that FFmpeg did not send. - Audio in the local output, but a YouTube warning: check the audio codec, sample rate, channel layout or count, bitrate, and any primary/backup encoder mismatch against YouTube’s guidance and the exact health message.
There is no safe universal “fixed” command without knowing the inputs, their streams, codecs, filters, and output target. A mapping that works for one file can select the wrong stream—or none at all—for another.
4. Match audio settings to YouTube’s ingest guidance
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its published recommendations include 44.1 kHz for stereo, 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are general encoder recommendations, not proof that any one setting caused your warning. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and compare them with your actual FFmpeg output.

Use the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room’s Health Indicator to read the specific error beside the warning. YouTube’s health messages and API issue types distinguish problems such as unsupported codecs, sample-rate or channel issues, bitrate warnings, and mismatches between primary and backup audio (live-stream error messages; LiveStream health status messages). Follow the message that appears; do not infer a codec problem merely from the phrase “audio is missing.”
5. Test the stream and separate encoding from network trouble
- Run a representative test with the same source and FFmpeg command you intend to use. Include typical audio and movement in the video.
- Check the output locally, then preview the received stream in Live Control Room and monitor the Health Indicator during the test.
- If FFmpeg’s output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube’s received stream does not, review encoder errors and CPU load, then investigate the outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder and inspecting the local archive before moving on to connection troubleshooting (troubleshooting guidance).
