How to Stream a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist with an AMD GPU

YouTube’s 4K60 recommendations are 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC and 50 Mbps for H.264. Set OBS to CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, verify AMD AMF support, and confirm the playlist playback workflow separately.

For a 4K, 60 fps YouTube Live broadcast, set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and the bitrate for your chosen codec: YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC and 50 Mbps for H.264. On an AMD system, select an AMF hardware encoder only if it appears in your OBS installation. One detail needs clarifying before you build the program: “playlist” could mean local files sequenced in OBS, a YouTube playlist URL, or a program assembled from multiple sources. The stream settings are clear; the exact playlist playback and transition workflow depends on which you mean.

What “playlist” means for a live stream

A YouTube Live stream is an incoming live program, not simply a YouTube playlist played into the broadcast. A list of local video files, a YouTube playlist URL, and a continuous program assembled in OBS are different workflows. The official encoder documentation does not establish that OBS can ingest a YouTube playlist URL as a live program, or specify a source that automatically advances through local files with gapless transitions. Confirm your intended source and playback method before relying on any particular sequence or transition behavior.

Do not confuse this with HLS’s technical use of a playlist: HLS media playlists describe segmented delivery for a player, not a viewer’s playlist of YouTube videos.

Choose an AMD encoder and codec

OBS supports AMD Advanced Media Framework (AMF) hardware encoding on Windows and Linux, but the codecs available depend on the particular GPU, drivers, operating system, and OBS installation. In OBS, check the encoder list rather than assuming your card exposes every codec. Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a GPU encoder; it does not guarantee that a specific system can capture, compose, play back, and encode a 4K60 program without performance problems.

Codec YouTube’s recommended 4K60 video bitrate When to consider it
AV1 35 Mbps Choose it if OBS offers AMD hardware AV1 encoding for your GPU. AMD lists AV1 encoding on RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 devices; OBS identifies recent AMD GPUs, including RX 7000 Series, as supporting hardware AV1.
HEVC (H.265) 35 Mbps Choose it if your GPU and OBS installation offer hardware HEVC encoding. YouTube requires HEVC for its live HDR path.
H.264 50 Mbps Use it as the broad-compatibility fallback when it is available in the encoder list.

YouTube’s listed minimum bitrates at 4K60 are 10 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC and 14 Mbps for H.264. For a quality-focused setup, use the recommended values in the table as your starting point. These are YouTube’s current encoder-guide figures, accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. They are ingest recommendations, not a measured quality comparison between codecs. OBS’s format guidance and AMD’s compatibility information describe support at category level, not guaranteed performance for every card or scene.

Set up OBS for YouTube Live at 4K60

  1. Prepare YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its stream key using YouTube’s current live setup. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  2. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service and connect with the current stream setup and key from Live Control Room. Labels can vary between OBS releases.
  3. Select the AMD hardware encoder. Open OBS Settings → Output, select the streaming output mode you use, and choose the AMD/AMF encoder and codec that actually appear in the encoder list.
  4. Set the video output. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution to 3840×2160. Set the frame rate to 60 fps using the available frame-rate controls.
  5. Apply YouTube’s encoder settings. In Settings → Output, set rate control to CBR, keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and video bitrate to the recommended codec-specific rate: 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264. YouTube says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval.
  6. Set audio. Use AAC or MP3 audio at 128 Kbps. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio.
  7. Choose ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS and also lists RTMP as supported. Use RTMPS when the service and OBS setup offer it.
  8. Build and verify the program. Add the video sources you have confirmed for your intended playlist workflow, then check their order, playback, audio, and transitions in OBS. Do not assume a YouTube playlist URL or automatic local-file advance works as needed without verifying it in your setup.

YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers. At 4K, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; the stream is optimized for quality with normal latency.

Test the stream before the event

Use a private or otherwise appropriate test with representative video movement and audio. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the broadcast, not only OBS’s local preview. There is no universal upload-speed multiplier established here: your connection needs stable capacity above the selected video bitrate, and a real test is the way to validate it.

  • Confirm the stream reaches YouTube at 3840×2160 and 60 fps.
  • Check for dropped frames, encoder overload, or network warnings in OBS and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Listen for audio clipping, silence, or sync drift over time.
  • Test the actual sequence of videos and any transitions you plan to use; a successful single-source test does not confirm playlist behavior.

HDR is a separate setup

Keep the settings above as the standard SDR path unless your source is HDR and the complete signal chain supports it. YouTube’s live HDR guidance requires compatible HDR source content and an encoder, and its OBS instructions specify YouTube HLS, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and a supported HDR color space. YouTube lists 10-bit HDR, BT.2020 primaries, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics for HDR configuration. Check support for the exact AMD GPU and encoder in use. YouTube’s regular live encoder guide says AV1 is not supported for HDR, so do not choose AV1 for this YouTube Live HDR workflow.

Troubleshooting common problems

The AMD encoder or codec does not appear in OBS

Availability depends on the GPU, driver, operating system, and OBS installation. Check the exact GPU model, update or verify its drivers, and confirm the installed OBS build supports the intended AMF encoder. If AV1 or HEVC is not offered, choose another available YouTube-supported codec rather than assuming the hardware can encode it.

YouTube reports an unstable stream or the picture drops frames

Check OBS’s network and encoder indicators, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and whether the connection can sustain more than the chosen bitrate. Test at the intended 4K60 settings and reduce competing network activity. Do not treat the minimum bitrate as a guarantee that a congested or inconsistent connection will remain stable.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The stream is not 4K or not 60 fps

Check both OBS’s configured output resolution and frame rate, then verify the received stream in YouTube. A 4K source alone does not prove the outgoing stream is configured for 3840×2160 at 60 fps.

The playlist does not advance or transitions have gaps

First identify whether the program uses local files, a YouTube playlist URL, or another OBS source. Confirm the source’s playback and transition behavior in a test broadcast; the encoder settings do not determine how a playlist is played. Do not rely on HLS playlist terminology as a way to load a viewer playlist into OBS.

Cost and hardware considerations

Start by checking the GPU already installed and the encoder list in OBS; no exact AMD card model is established as necessary for this workflow. If an upgrade is required, AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series is a category to investigate for hardware AV1 support, but that is not a recommendation of a particular model or a guarantee of 4K60 performance. Compare the exact card’s supported encoder, your source playback and scene needs, and your system’s ability to sustain the test stream before buying.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on YouTube rather than broadcast an interactive OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-live replacement.
