YouTube can accept a restarted encoder feed, but it does not promise to resume the encoder’s local video loop at the point where it stopped. To recover reliably, reuse the correct stream key and settings, choose auto-start or scheduled-stream controls deliberately, and configure the encoder to reload and loop its source after restart. Test the whole recovery path before leaving it unattended.
What YouTube does—and does not—resume
YouTube’s stream key gives an encoder the credentials and destination information needed to send a feed. A reusable custom key and the Live Control Room’s “Reuse settings” option can reduce setup after routine restarts. But these features do not preserve the playback position of a file looping on your computer: that behavior depends on the encoder, its source settings, and how it starts after a process or host restart.
Auto-start is also narrower than it may sound. When enabled, it lets the encoder start the YouTube stream from the encoder side; YouTube does not describe it as a way to remember or restore the encoder’s local loop position. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented encoder flow includes waiting for the preview in Live Control Room and clicking “Go live.” Don’t assume a reconnect automatically puts every scheduled event back into the live state.
Set up a restart-ready stream
- Make the YouTube ingest settings reusable. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use a custom stream key when appropriate. YouTube says a custom key can be reused unless it is reset. “Reuse settings” copies the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key into a new stream. Keep the key private.
- Choose auto-start based on your workflow. Enable it if you want an incoming encoder feed to start the stream. If the event is scheduled, plan to check the preview in Live Control Room and click “Go live” as directed in YouTube’s encoder setup flow.
- Configure the encoder’s source recovery. Set the video source to loop, and check the encoder’s own documentation for what happens after its process or computer restarts: whether it launches automatically, reloads the file, resumes or starts at the beginning, and reconnects to the intended YouTube stream. Do not assume these behaviors are the same across encoders or versions.
- Verify the destination and key after restart. Confirm the encoder is sending the expected source to the intended YouTube server URL with the correct stream key. Look for a preview in Live Control Room and inspect stream-health messages. If a third-party encoder reports a start error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to retrieve a stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Test unattended recovery. Simulate the failure you need to survive—such as stopping the encoder process or restarting its host—and watch what happens from the viewer’s side. Check that playback returns, the correct source is playing, audio and video are acceptable, and the stream remains healthy. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming playback rolls to the backup.
Choose a recovery approach
| Approach | What to configure and verify | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| One encoder with reconnect | Check its reconnect behavior, whether it automatically reloads the source, what its loop does after a process restart, and the YouTube stream’s auto-start setting. | A simpler setup where a brief interruption is acceptable. |
| Primary and backup encoders | Test the configured failover method, source synchronization, independent power and network paths, and how the viewer’s player transitions. YouTube recommends testing the rollover, but its guidance does not specify the exact dual-feed setup. | Situations where continuity matters more. Consult the encoder or platform documentation for the specific configuration. |
For higher-production events, YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders and advises testing backup-encoder failover. That recommendation does not establish that a particular model will resume a local loop after restart; confirm the behavior in the manufacturer’s documentation and in your own test.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check that the stream is really back
- Confirm the encoder is running and sending the intended video and audio—not merely that its interface says it is connected.
- Check for the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room.
- Open the channel or watch page from a viewer’s perspective and confirm that playback has rolled to the expected feed.
- If you are recording locally, check that the archive file is growing and that audio and video remain in sync.
- Repeat the test after changes to the encoder, source, key, network, power, or scheduled-event setup.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That concerns archive behavior, not whether a loop survives encoder downtime or whether a longer stream will be archived in the same way.
Troubleshooting after a restart
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder reports a start error | Stream key or ingest configuration may be wrong or stale. | Retrieve the stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder, following YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. |
| Encoder is sending, but the stream does not start | Auto-start may be off, or the event may be scheduled and awaiting operator action. | Check the stream’s auto-start setting. For a scheduled stream, check for the preview and click “Go live” in Live Control Room. |
| Stream returns, but the video starts at the beginning or the wrong point | Local source and restart behavior are controlled by the encoder. | Check its source-loop and restart settings; test whether it begins again or resumes. YouTube’s guidance does not specify local playback-position persistence. |
| Feed does not return after an encoder or computer restart | The encoder may not launch, reload the source, or reconnect automatically. | Start the encoder, confirm its source and destination, and verify the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Consult the encoder’s documentation for automatic launch and reconnect options. |
| Backup encoder starts but viewers do not see a clean rollover | Failover, synchronization, or network and power dependencies may be misconfigured. | Repeat YouTube’s recommended failover test and verify the viewer-player transition. Check the platform’s documentation for its specific dual-encoder setup. |

Does YouTube automatically resume a loop at its previous playback position after an encoder restart?
No such behavior is promised in YouTube’s encoder guidance; playback-position recovery depends on the encoder and its source configuration.

Will “Reuse settings” carry the stream key into a new stream?
YouTube says it copies the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. A custom key can also be reused unless it is reset.
Can an encoder restart make a scheduled stream live automatically?
Do not assume so. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream flow includes checking for the preview and clicking “Go live” in Live Control Room.
