First copy the current stream key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify the matching server URL and protocol, then check that the broadcast is ready to accept the feed. Treat a stale or incorrect key as an early possibility—not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Work through these checks in order

Copy the current stream key
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, select Stream, and copy the key shown for the stream you intend to use. YouTube’s startup-error guidance recommends getting a key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Make sure FFmpeg is not using a key copied from a different broadcast or an older setup. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage live stream settings.
If you suspect a key is stale or exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; editors and viewers cannot reset keys. After a reset, update FFmpeg with the new key. Never post the key in logs, screenshots, or public support requests. YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Match the server URL to that stream
Check both values FFmpeg is using: the YouTube server URL and the stream key. Compare them with the details shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room. A correct key paired with the wrong endpoint can still prevent the feed from reaching the intended broadcast. Check for a truncated copy, accidental quotation marks or whitespace, and settings carried over from another stream. YouTube’s setup guidance specifies entering the server URL and stream key in the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

The available YouTube instructions describe the encoder setup generally, not a universal FFmpeg command line. FFmpeg options and how the key is supplied can vary by build and invocation, so verify your own command’s URL/key handling rather than replacing it with an unverified one-size-fits-all command.

Confirm RTMP versus RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. If you choose RTMPS, copy the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room and confirm that your FFmpeg build and invocation support that transport. YouTube specifically advises using the RTMPS protocol and server, not merely changing one while leaving the other as RTMP. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

YouTube mentions port 443 as a suggestion for certain SSL errors. That is not a general fix for HTTP 403. Do not change ports or protocols on the assumption that they explain an authorization rejection.

Check the broadcast state and channel eligibility
Confirm that the intended stream exists and is selected in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube’s setup flow: start sending the feed, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room, and then select Go live. A missing or inactive broadcast is a separate thing to investigate from an endpoint rejection. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Separate a server rejection from feed or connection problems
If the key, URL, protocol, and broadcast checks look right, use YouTube’s broader stream-health guidance: update to the latest encoder version, check the feed locally, review encoder errors and CPU load, and test outbound internet connectivity if the local output appears healthy. These steps can uncover an encoder or connection problem, but they do not establish what a particular 403 means. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

YouTube’s RTMPS guidance treats SSL errors and connection timeouts as distinct troubleshooting cases. A timeout or SSL failure is not interchangeable with a clean HTTP 403 response. RTMPS troubleshooting.
What an HTTP 403 does—and does not—tell you
The YouTube help pages cited here cover startup errors, stream keys, server URLs, RTMPS, SSL errors, timeouts, and stream health. They do not define HTTP 403 as having one unique cause, or say that every 403 means the key is invalid. Check the key first because YouTube recommends refreshing it for third-party encoder startup errors, but verify the endpoint, protocol, and broadcast state as well.

For a more specific diagnosis, the useful details are the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, the selected YouTube endpoint, and the complete server response. Do not share an active key while collecting those details.
