Rising Dropped Frames (Network) usually points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Rendering lag and encoder overload are separate problems. Match your output to YouTube’s current settings, test sustained upload under real conditions, leave bandwidth headroom, and lower stream demand if needed. OBS’s dynamic bitrate can help during congestion, but it trades picture quality for fewer dropped frames and does not repair the connection.
Identify what is actually fluctuating
Open OBS’s Stats window while streaming or during a representative test. Look at the specific counter that rises: the fix depends on whether frames are being lost on the way to YouTube, delayed while OBS renders a scene, or held up for viewers during playback.
- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS cannot deliver data reliably to the remote ingest server, or the configured bitrate exceeds available capacity. OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself causes dropped frames. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide explains this symptom.
- Rendering lag: OBS is not rendering frames in time. This is distinct from network loss; investigate scene and graphics workload rather than treating it as an upload problem.
- Encoding lag or encoder overload: the selected encoder cannot keep up with the configured output. This is not the same as network dropped frames.
- Viewer buffering while OBS counters stay steady: the stream may be reaching YouTube normally while a viewer’s network or device struggles to play it. OBS discusses this separately in its buffering troubleshooting guide.
Record the relevant counters before changing settings. If the network dropped-frame count is not increasing, reducing upload bitrate may not address the fault.
Set a YouTube-compatible output target
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR encoding and publishes bitrate ranges that depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not copy a setting from another streamer unless those output conditions match yours. YouTube’s current English-language table does not state a publication year, and its recommendations can change; check YouTube’s live encoder settings guide before relying on a numeric target.

These are YouTube’s listed encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection, encoder, or ingest route will sustain them. The guide also specifies RTMP/RTMPS, support for H.264, H.265, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Follow the current guide for the chosen codec and output mode.
Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Check upload speed, not just download speed. A speed test is only a sample at one moment, so repeat it when the problem normally occurs and under the same household or network conditions you use to stream. Compare the sustained upload available to your total outgoing stream bitrate, including audio and any other simultaneous uploads.

YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Other people or devices sharing the connection can use part of that capacity. A high result in one speed test does not prove that upload capacity will remain stable during a broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Reduce demand if the connection cannot sustain it
- Choose a lower bitrate first. If network dropped frames rise at your current target, test a lower CBR bitrate that stays within measured upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Lower resolution or frame rate if necessary. If a lower bitrate alone does not stabilize the stream, reduce output resolution or frame rate and select the matching YouTube recommendation. A lower-demand stream can be more reliable, though it carries less detail or motion smoothness.
- Test representative gameplay. Use the movement, scene changes, and audio you expect in the real stream; a static screen may not represent your normal output or encoder workload.
- Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test where appropriate. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream health/messages during the test. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring health during the event.
Isolate Wi-Fi, software, and hardware causes
If the network dropped-frame counter rises despite a conservative bitrate, change one variable at a time and compare the result. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance identifies several possible local causes; none can be diagnosed from the symptom alone.

- Wi-Fi: connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet for a test. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity or fix congestion upstream.
- VPN: temporarily test without it, if safe and permitted on your network. A VPN can alter the route to the ingest server.
- Firewall, antivirus, or network-prioritization utilities: check whether they are restricting or deprioritizing OBS. Avoid disabling security protections permanently.
- Drivers and network equipment: check that network drivers are current and inspect the router/modem connection if other devices also lose connectivity or show unstable upload.
- OBS network options: OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows-only options. Test cautiously and revert changes that do not help; if the IPv4-only option makes no difference, return it to default.
Keep a note of each change and its effect. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
Use OBS dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced → Network and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) if that option is available in your version. OBS describes it as lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames. The trade-off is reduced video quality; it does not solve the underlying connection problem. Treat it as a fallback when you cannot resolve the root cause, not a substitute for a stable connection and suitable target bitrate.

When viewers report buffering but OBS is stable
If OBS is not reporting rising network dropped frames and YouTube stream health is otherwise steady, ask whether buffering affects particular viewers, devices, or networks. Viewer-side playback depends on their connection and equipment. A more conservative resolution or bitrate may make the stream accessible to more viewers, at the cost of image detail or motion quality. OBS’s buffering guide covers this distinction.
