How to Loop 4K 60fps Videos on YouTube Live Without Unnecessary Quality Loss

You may not need to convert a 4K 60fps video to loop it on YouTube Live. Set up an OBS Media Source or VLC playlist, match YouTube’s encoder guidance, and test the stream before broadcasting.

You may not need to convert your 4K 60fps video at all. If OBS can play the file correctly at its intended frame size and frame rate, use it as-is: add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. For a playlist, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Avoiding an unnecessary re-encode helps preserve the source, but YouTube transcodes live streams, so no setup can promise a lossless result all the way to every viewer.

Do you need to convert the video first?

Usually, no. OBS documents support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM as Media Source video formats. If your file opens and plays smoothly in OBS at its intended 4K frame size and 60 fps, you can use that file directly rather than converting it just to make a loop.

A filename extension does not guarantee that every codec or profile inside the file will work on your particular computer. If OBS cannot decode it, playback stutters, or the source does not behave as expected, conversion may be needed for compatibility. The required output depends on the source codec, bit depth, color or HDR characteristics, audio format and the system doing the decoding; without those details, there is no single conversion setting that can be recommended as universally lossless. OBS Media Sources

Loop one video or a playlist in OBS

Loop a single clip

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene you will stream.
  2. Select the video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
  3. Start playback and confirm it restarts when the clip reaches the end.

Loop several clips

  1. Install VLC on the computer running OBS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source and create or select its playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist, then play the playlist and check that it returns to the first item after the last one.

These source controls repeat local media; they do not themselves start a YouTube broadcast. OBS documents the Media Source loop option and VLC Video playlist controls in its Media Sources guide.

Set OBS for a 4K 60fps YouTube stream

Match the stream output to the video you intend to show. In OBS, check the video settings so the output canvas and stream are 4K (2160p) and 60 fps; make sure you have not accidentally selected a smaller output resolution or different frame rate. YouTube supports up to 60 fps and recommends testing before going live. Its live encoder guidance gives these 2160p60 ingest recommendations, which differ by codec:

Ingest codec YouTube recommended bitrate at 2160p60 YouTube listed minimum
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular visual result. Use a bitrate your encoder can produce and your internet connection can sustain consistently. YouTube also recommends CBR (constant bitrate), a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. RTMPS is the recommended ingest protocol. At 4K/2160, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current guidance.

Create the YouTube broadcast and test it

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not share or publish it.
  3. Start the encoder’s preview or test workflow and check that the video is 4K at 60 fps, the loop works, and audio is present and in sync.
  4. Use representative footage for the test, including the fastest motion and loudest audio in the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
  5. When the preview and stream health look right, start the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room if it does not start automatically.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and provides stream-health information for the incoming feed. Its live-streaming guidance also notes that enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so allow time for activation before a planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.

What “without quality loss” can and cannot mean

Keeping the original file as the OBS source avoids an extra conversion step that might require re-encoding. It does not make the end-to-end live experience lossless. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, including the source feed, so viewers may receive different versions suited to their devices and connections. A viewer’s playback is not simply an untouched copy of your local file. YouTube live encoder settings and YouTube video upload encoding guidance

YouTube’s upload guidance says to upload content at the same frame rate in which it was recorded. That is advice for uploaded videos, not a promise about live-stream quality. For a live loop, preserve the source frame size and rate in your encoder where possible, use YouTube’s live settings for the codec you choose, and judge the result in a test stream.

If you must convert the file

  1. Keep an untouched copy of the original.
  2. Identify the specific compatibility problem first, such as OBS failing to decode the file or the computer struggling to play it. Do not convert solely because the video is 4K or 60 fps.
  3. Choose a conversion format compatible with your setup while preserving 3840 × 2160 resolution and 60 fps if those are the intended source properties.
  4. Inspect the converted file before using it for a long stream: check playback, motion, audio sync and any color or HDR changes that matter to the content.
  5. Test the converted file in OBS and on YouTube before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

The right conversion settings cannot be specified without knowing the source’s codec, bit depth, color/HDR status and audio format. A conversion may require re-encoding and can change the picture or sound; do not label it lossless unless the specific tool and settings support that claim and you have verified the result.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS will not open the file: The container extension alone does not establish codec compatibility. Try a compatible conversion while keeping the original, then test the result in OBS.
  • The stream is not 4K or 60 fps: Check OBS’s output resolution and frame rate, then confirm the incoming stream details and health in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • The stream drops or reports poor health: Check whether sustained upload capacity is sufficient for the selected codec’s recommended bitrate. Test the connection and encoder with representative footage before the scheduled stream.
  • The clip stops at the end: Reopen the Media Source properties and check Loop. For multiple videos, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source and verify the playlist itself plays through.
  • There is no sound or it is out of sync: Check that the source’s audio is enabled and audible in OBS, then test the stream preview. YouTube’s live guidance recommends AAC or MP3 audio.
  • You cannot go live yet: If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours after enabling the feature. Set it up ahead of the broadcast.

Copyright and channel considerations

Looping a video does not grant permission to broadcast its music, gameplay footage, or other copyrighted material. Use material you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s policies and any relevant licenses before running a long broadcast. YouTube’s rules and enforcement can affect whether a stream remains available; no encoder setting changes those rights or guarantees that a channel’s content will qualify for monetization.

For an always-on channel built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: it keeps a YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on at home, accepts video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Learn about StreamNeo.
