How to Stream a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist from a Raspberry Pi 5

A Pi 5 can decode H.265 and drive 4K displays, but sustained 4K60 live encoding is unproven. Here’s how to configure YouTube’s targets and test a local playlist safely.

You can use a Raspberry Pi 5 to send a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live, but its 4K display and H.265 decoding capabilities do not prove it can encode your files into a sustained 4K 60fps stream. Treat 4K60 as something to test on your exact setup—not a guaranteed Pi 5 capability—and be ready to lower resolution or frame rate.

This guide assumes “playlist” means local video files in an order you choose, not a playlist hosted on YouTube. A local-file setup needs software to play the files in sequence, produce a compatible live video signal, and send that signal to YouTube using your stream key. The sources cited here do not establish a tested Raspberry Pi OS workflow or a reliable FFmpeg or OBS command, so this article explains the requirements and test process rather than presenting an unverified command as proven.

Can a Raspberry Pi 5 stream 4K at 60fps?

It is not established that a Raspberry Pi 5 can continuously encode and send a local-video playlist at 3840×2160 and 60 frames per second. Raspberry Pi’s documentation confirms H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoding and 4Kp60 display support; those are not the same as sustained 4K60 encoding for a live stream. The documentation says: “The Raspberry Pi 5 has H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoding. This decoding is enabled by default, so a hardware codec licence key is not needed.” Raspberry Pi documentation

Whether your setup can meet the workload depends on the encoder software, codec, source files, cooling, and sustained network upload. The material available here does not provide a tested benchmark or success guarantee for a Pi 5 playlist stream. Validate with your own content before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What you need for a local-file playlist stream

  • A Raspberry Pi 5 board with Raspberry Pi OS and a stable network connection.
  • Video files stored locally and ordered into a continuous playlist using software that can play them without gaps.
  • Streaming software that can output a YouTube-compatible live stream at the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your setup can sustain.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a stream key. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

A normal YouTube website playlist is not a local media playlist: the workflow described here does not relay a YouTube-hosted playlist into another live stream.

Use YouTube’s ingest settings as the target

YouTube’s US-English encoder settings page lists the following recommendations for 2160p at 60fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of Raspberry Pi 5 performance. Localized YouTube pages may show different figures, so check the current page for your region before configuring your encoder.

Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists RTMP or RTMPS as supported protocols, supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, and allows frame rates up to 60fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current guidance. Choose a codec and protocol that your selected software can actually output reliably; YouTube accepting a format does not mean your Pi’s encoder software can produce it at 4K60.

Build and validate the stream

  1. Enable YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream using an encoder and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If this is your first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Prepare local files. Put the videos in the intended order and use a playlist-capable player or encoder workflow that can advance from one file to the next. Confirm that audio plays and that the sequence behaves as intended before connecting to YouTube.
  3. Configure the encoder output. Set the output resolution and frame rate you want to test, select a codec and protocol supported by your software, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). For 2160p60, use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance above as the target, not as evidence that the Pi can sustain it.
  4. Connect the stream key and start a private or unlisted test. Enter the key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings, then start the stream. Exact labels and menu paths vary by software; no specific Raspberry Pi application configuration has been validated here.
  5. Test representative material. Run a sufficiently long test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, motion, and playlist transitions you expect to use. YouTube recommends testing in advance with similar audio and motion.
  6. Check what YouTube receives. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. Confirm the received resolution and frame rate rather than relying only on the encoder’s configured output, and watch for dropped frames, instability, or interruptions.
  7. Adjust and retest. If the Pi drops frames, overheats, or cannot maintain stable output, reduce the resolution or frame rate and repeat the test. A stable lower-resolution stream is a more dependable result than selecting 4K60 without verifying it.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that live streaming is enabled, the correct stream key is entered, and the selected protocol and destination are supported by the encoder software.
  • The stream starts but has poor health or dropped frames: Check the encoder’s actual output and network stability. For a 4K60 target, compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, then lower resolution or frame rate if the Pi cannot sustain the workload.
  • The output is not 4K60: Verify YouTube’s received resolution and frame rate. Display support or H.265 decoding does not establish that the encoder is producing a 4K60 live signal.
  • Video or audio stops at a file boundary: Check the playlist player’s transition behavior and test the same sequence before broadcast. The stream must continue producing output while files change.
  • Live streaming is unavailable on the channel: Complete YouTube’s live-stream setup and allow for first-time activation, which may take up to 24 hours.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Having a video file locally does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its video or audio. Before streaming, confirm you have permission for every component, including music, gameplay footage, and other people’s material. YouTube may detect copyrighted content during a live stream; a rights claim or other enforcement action can interrupt or restrict a broadcast. Review the platform’s current rules and use the copyright safety checklist before going live. Separately, whether a channel can monetize repetitive or reused material depends on YouTube’s policies and channel circumstances; an uninterrupted stream is not itself a guarantee of monetization.
