You can stream an MP3 playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by feeding the playlist audio and a compatible video stream into an encoder, then sending the output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, recommends RTMPS, and calls for constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. An audio-only output is not enough: YouTube needs video as well as audio.
What you need before starting
- FFmpeg: install a build that includes the input, audio/video encoding and output protocols you plan to use. FFmpeg commands and options can vary by build, so check the documentation for your installed version.
- An MP3 playlist: keep the audio files accessible to the machine running FFmpeg. The files should be compatible with the playlist method you choose.
- A video source: YouTube Live expects a video stream as well as audio. A still visual encoded as video or a looping background video can serve as the visual, but the exact FFmpeg input syntax depends on your files and build.
- YouTube Live credentials: open Live Control Room for the channel, create or select a stream, and use the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides. Treat the key as a password; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Reliable upload capacity: select an outgoing bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and monitoring stream health while live.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
Prepare the playlist and choose how to combine the files
Use the concat demuxer for compatible inputs
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. This is useful when the files have matching stream properties and avoiding another encode matters. It is not a guarantee that an arbitrary set of MP3s will join seamlessly or stream-copy correctly; differences in encoding properties can cause errors, gaps or playback changes.
Normalize or filter when the files differ
If the MP3s are not compatible for the concat demuxer, use a concat filter or transcode them to consistent audio properties before the broadcast. The concat filter is the more appropriate route when re-encoding is needed. FFmpeg describes the distinction in its FAQ. Inspect the input streams and mapping, then test the actual playlist rather than assuming every file will behave alike.

Keep audio and video as separate inputs when appropriate
A playlist can be supplied as an audio input alongside a separate video input, with the audio mapped into an FLV/RTMP-style output. That is an illustrative workflow, not a universal command: the right input syntax, mapping, loop behavior and output options depend on the playlist, visual source and FFmpeg version. A 2023 FFmpeg-user mailing-list example illustrates this general pattern using RTMP; current YouTube guidance recommends RTMPS instead.

These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations on the settings page accessed in 2026, not a promise that a particular connection or stream will work at that rate. For live encoding, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. AAC is a practical output choice when transcoding a mixed playlist, although YouTube also lists MP3 as supported. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before a broadcast because platform guidance can change.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Open Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and retrieve the ingest URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Do not substitute a key from another channel or broadcast.
- Build the FFmpeg input and mapping. Provide the playlist as the audio source and a video source as the video input. Map the intended video and audio streams to the output. Choose concat demuxing for compatible files or a filter/transcoding path if normalization is necessary.
- Set the output format and encoder options. Use a YouTube-supported protocol and codecs, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (at most four seconds), and audio settings appropriate to the playlist. Choose a resolution and bitrate that the upload connection can reliably maintain.
- Send the stream to the supplied ingest endpoint. Use the URL and key from Live Control Room, with RTMPS preferred where supported. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation covers RTMP-family URL handling; verify the syntax for your installed FFmpeg build.
- Check the preview before making the broadcast public. Confirm that both the video and audio appear, the playlist advances as expected, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
There is no single safe command to copy for every playlist and video source: the available inputs, concat compatibility, stream mapping, encoder build and RTMPS endpoint all affect the correct syntax. YouTube’s API documentation describes stream resources and ingestion configuration at LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.

Test and monitor the broadcast
Before scheduling a long stream, test a short private or unlisted broadcast with representative audio and video. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Listen for clipping, silence, unexpected gaps between tracks or abrupt level changes; watch for frozen or missing video. Confirm the selected bitrate is stable on the actual upload connection.
During the broadcast, keep Live Control Room open and watch its stream-health messages. If health degrades, reduce the video bitrate or resolution to a rate your connection can sustain, then verify that the preview recovers. A test proves only the tested files, settings and connection; it does not establish that a different playlist or a longer session will behave identically.

Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube receives audio but no picture: the output needs a video stream, not just an MP3 input. Check that the video source is present and that the output maps a video stream.
- The stream key is rejected or no preview appears: confirm you copied the current ingest URL and key from the correct channel’s Live Control Room, and check that the stream is active there. Keep the key private.
- FFmpeg reports concat errors or tracks skip: inspect the MP3 stream properties. The files may not be compatible with the concat demuxer; normalize or transcode them, or use a suitable concat filter workflow.
- Audio is silent, missing or mapped incorrectly: inspect FFmpeg’s input stream listing and output mapping. Check that the playlist input is the one assigned to the output audio stream.
- Stream health is poor or the broadcast buffers: the chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity. Lower the video bitrate or resolution, then repeat a representative test.
- Video or audio settings are rejected or behave unexpectedly: check the codecs and settings against YouTube’s current encoder guide and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoders and protocol.
Rights and YouTube policy
Use only audio and visual material you have the right to broadcast. Permission to possess an MP3 does not, by itself, establish permission to livestream it. YouTube’s policies and copyright processes apply to live broadcasts; review the current rules relevant to your content and obtain appropriate rights before streaming. A playlist that runs technically is not necessarily cleared for broadcast.
For continuous programming, also make the stream meaningfully useful to viewers rather than relying on a long loop as a substitute for original value. FFmpeg and encoder settings do not determine whether content complies with YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies; check YouTube’s current channel and monetization rules for your circumstances.
