Normalize the files to a shared audio and video profile before looping them. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer does not reconcile mismatched audio codecs, channel layouts, or stream time bases; it expects matching streams. For a YouTube Live playlist, inspect each MP4, re-encode to consistent settings, place the normalized files in an ffconcat list, then send the looped output to YouTube using the stream key and compatible live-encoder settings.
Why different audio formats break a concat playlist
An MP4 is a container, not a promise that every file has the same streams. One clip may contain AAC stereo audio, another MP3 or multichannel audio, and their video streams or time bases may differ too. A playlist that simply joins files can therefore fail, switch parameters unexpectedly, or develop gaps at boundaries.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. It can be useful for compatible files and workflows that avoid re-encoding, but it does not make incompatible inputs alike. When re-encoding is needed, FFmpeg’s FAQ points to the concat filter; alternatively, normalize the files first and then use the demuxer.
Inspect every MP4 before choosing stream maps
Run this for each input and record the video and audio stream details, not just the file extension:

ffmpeg -i "clip-one.mp4"
- Video codec, dimensions, and frame rate.
- Audio codec, sample rate, and channel layout.
- Stream order and whether the file has more than one video or audio stream.
- File duration and, where available, the durations of the individual streams.
Use the inspection output to choose the streams you actually want. FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection follows its own rules; explicit -map options avoid accidentally sending an unintended audio or video stream.
Choose a workflow: normalize first or use the concat filter
Normalize separate files, then use the concat demuxer
This is a straightforward playlist workflow when the clips can be prepared in advance. Re-encode each source to the same video dimensions, frame rate, and codec, and to the same audio codec, sample rate, and channel layout. The exact settings depend on your material and desired YouTube output. The important requirement is that the resulting files match one another.
A schematic example for a source with one desired video stream and one desired audio stream is:

ffmpeg -i "source.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -r 30 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 "normalized.mp4"
Repeat with equivalent output settings for every file, changing the input and output names. This example assumes those stream indexes exist and that your FFmpeg build includes libx264. It is not a universal preset: verify the source streams and select dimensions, frame rate, and encoding settings appropriate to your video.

Use the concat filter when you want one re-encoding graph
The concat filter is the alternative when you prefer to concatenate inputs as part of a re-encoding workflow rather than create normalized intermediate files. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the filter when concatenation requires re-encoding. The filter still needs a deliberate input and output design: inspect streams, select the intended audio and video, and make the resulting streams compatible.
Create an ffconcat playlist and loop it
After normalization, create a plain-text file named, for example, playlist.ffconcat. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition; add one file directive per normalized clip:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'normalized-one.mp4'
file 'normalized-two.mp4'
file 'normalized-three.mp4'
Use paths that resolve from the directory where you run FFmpeg. The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each file follows the preceding one. If audio and video stream lengths differ, gaps can occur. Incorrect duration metadata can also create timing artifacts; check the actual stream durations, and use the demuxer’s documented duration directive when the stored duration is wrong.
Send the loop to YouTube Live
The following is a command pattern, not a tested universal command. Replace the bitrate and ingest address, check that your maps and frame rate match the prepared files, and keep your stream key private. Options for an output must appear before its output URL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -r 30 -g 60 -b:v <chosen bitrate> -c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 128k -f flv <YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL plus stream key>
-stream_loop -1 repeats the playlist input; -re reads it at its native rate for a live-style output. The maps select the first video and first audio stream in the concatenated input. Change them if inspection shows a different layout, or omit a map only if you have deliberately verified the automatic selection. The example encodes H.264 video and AAC stereo audio; confirm your installed FFmpeg build has the requested encoders.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. In the example, -g 60 corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps; set the GOP/keyframe interval to match the chosen frame rate. For stereo, YouTube’s guidance specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; its 5.1 guidance specifies 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Those audio values are platform recommendations, not requirements for every possible workflow. Set a video bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and YouTube’s current guidance rather than copying an arbitrary value.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Before relying on a playlist, test with representative video movement and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. Use YouTube’s current encoder page for the latest platform settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

There are audio gaps or audio/video drift between clips
Compare each file’s total duration with its audio and video stream durations. The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally, so streams that do not end together may leave gaps. Check whether duration metadata is accurate; where it is not, the concat demuxer supports an explicit duration directive.
The output uses the wrong audio or video stream
Inspect the input stream order and add explicit maps such as -map 0:v:0 and -map 0:a:0 for the desired streams. Adjust the indexes to match the actual input rather than assuming every file has the same layout.
YouTube rejects the output or reports poor stream health
Compare the actual encoded output—not just the command—with YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Check codec, CBR behavior, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and whether the selected resolution and bitrate are suitable. Test with both sound and representative motion, then use YouTube’s stream-health monitoring to identify the reported issue.
