Before starting an encoder-based YouTube Live stream, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live, enter the stream details, select Stream or Manage, then open Stream settings and choose a mode under Stream latency. For a non-interactive 24/7 feed, Normal latency is usually the right starting point: it supports all resolutions and live features and has the least viewer buffering among the three modes.
Change latency before you go live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Enter the stream details for the broadcast.
- In the right-hand menu, select Stream or Manage.
- Open Stream settings in the stream dashboard.
- Under Stream latency, choose Normal latency, Low latency, or Ultra-low latency.
- Send a test feed from your encoder. Check audio, motion, and the Live Control Room preview before starting the stream.
This selectable setting is for encoder-based streams. YouTube configures webcam and mobile streams for interactivity, so those formats do not offer a latency-mode selector. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and that event appearing on the stream (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).
Choose a mode for your kind of stream
Latency is a trade-off: a shorter delay can make conversation feel more immediate, but leaves less buffer to absorb network fluctuations. A mode is not a guaranteed end-to-end delay; congestion can still cause delays even when the connection can handle the average bitrate.
| Mode | Best suited to | Viewer delay guidance | Buffering and format considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive streams, including continuous ambience or information feeds where immediate chat responses are not important. | No specific delay figure stated by YouTube. | Lowest viewer buffering among the modes; supports all resolutions and live features, including 4K. |
| Low latency | Limited interaction, such as polls, when immediate responses are unnecessary. | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds, according to YouTube. | Does not support 4K. Less read-ahead buffer than normal latency can mean more playback interruption when the network fluctuates. |
| Ultra-low latency | Highly interactive, near-real-time conversation. | Most viewers experience less than five seconds, according to YouTube. | Does not support 4K and has greater viewer buffering risk; ingestion problems can affect viewers more. It is disabled when using HLS ingestion. |
YouTube recommends Normal latency when you do not plan to interact with the audience. Its guidance figures describe what most viewers experience, not a guarantee for every viewer or stream (Understand live streaming latency).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the feed and connection before starting
These checks improve the chance of a stable broadcast; they do not change the latency mode.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Check your outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed; the two can differ (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Test representative content. Check audio and motion similar to what the stream will actually show, then inspect the Live Control Room preview.
- Watch stream health. Look for ingestion or connection warnings before committing to the continuous run.
- Account for the ingest protocol. If the encoder uses HLS, Ultra-low latency is unavailable; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it transmits segments (YouTube Help: Set up live streaming with an encoder).
Plan for archives and DVR on a continuous stream
Do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive as a complete recording of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive as a backup (YouTube Help: Archive live streams).

DVR may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube allows DVR to be toggled while live, but a change applies to viewers who start playback after that change; it does not alter the latency-mode selection procedure (YouTube Help: Enable DVR on live streams).
Troubleshoot common latency and playback problems
- You cannot find “Stream latency.” Confirm that you created an encoder-based stream in Live Control Room. Webcam and mobile formats do not expose this selector.
- Ultra-low latency is unavailable. Check whether the stream uses HLS ingestion; YouTube disables Ultra-low latency for HLS.
- Viewers report buffering after you chose a lower-latency mode. Lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer. Test Normal latency, check stream health, and verify that upload capacity has the recommended headroom.
- The stream is delayed despite a low-latency setting. The mode does not guarantee a fixed end-to-end delay. Network congestion and ingestion conditions can affect actual playback.
- A long stream is missing from the archive or lacks DVR controls. Streams over 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Preserve the source locally if the full recording matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
