Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can schedule a YouTube live event in YouTube Studio, but that does not play an M3U playlist. To make a 24/7 channel, a separate playout system must read the playlist, produce a continuous audio/video feed, and send that feed to YouTube through an encoder using your stream URL and stream key.
Understand the three parts: event, stream and playlist
A YouTube live channel built from an M3U playlist involves three separate pieces:
- The event: A
liveBroadcastrepresents the public event page and its schedule. - The incoming stream: A
liveStreamrepresents the transmission settings used by an encoder to send video to YouTube. The encoder needs YouTube’s server URL and your stream key. - The playout: Software or a hosted service reads the M3U entries, plays their audio and video in sequence, and supplies that output to the encoder.
Creating the event alone does not connect or play the playlist. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes the event from the stream configuration and describes reusing a stream configuration for recurring broadcasts: YouTube Live Streaming API: Life of a Broadcast.
Choose whether you need one continuous channel or separate event pages
One continuous 24/7 channel
Use a continuous feed when viewers should find the same live destination running day and night. Your playout and encoder must keep sending video; scheduling a future event does not keep either process running. The API guide also describes a 24/7 broadcast continuing while a separate interview is sent to another broadcast. That is a distinct setup from creating recurring event pages.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Recurring scheduled events
If you want separate public pages for individual shows or sessions, create scheduled broadcasts and reuse the stream configuration. The API guide describes this recurring-event design with one event live at a time. It is not the same as one uninterrupted channel.
For the API concepts and supported broadcast relationships, see the YouTube Live Streaming API guide.

Prepare the M3U playlist and playout system
An M3U file is a playlist description, not a YouTube live feed. Your chosen playout tool must be able to parse the specific playlist and access and decode its media sources. IPTV-style playlists can contain different source formats or access restrictions; do not assume a tool can play every M3U just because it supports playlists generally.
- Confirm access and rights. Make sure you are authorized to use every video and audio source, and that the sources will remain accessible during the planned broadcast.
- Check the exact playlist format. Verify whether the file points to direct media, HLS streams, or other formats, and whether any entries require credentials or other access controls.
- Test every entry in the selected playout tool. Confirm it can load the playlist, play each item, and move to the next item. Check both picture and audio.
- Decide how failures should behave. Test what happens when an entry is unavailable, stalls, or ends unexpectedly. Set up an appropriate fallback or alert if the tool supports it; do not assume it will skip or recover unless you have verified that behavior.
- Connect playout output to an encoder. The playout system needs to provide audio/video the encoder can transmit. Confirm that this integration works with your chosen software or service before scheduling a public launch.
FFmpeg documents HLS playlist and muxer support, but its documentation does not provide one universal command that turns every IPTV M3U into a YouTube-ready feed. Validate your actual input and workflow against the FFmpeg formats documentation.

Schedule and start the YouTube live stream
- Enable live streaming on the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help on live streaming. Enable it well before the planned start.
- Create the event in YouTube Studio. Schedule a live event if you need a public page in advance. Select the continuous-channel or recurring-event design that matches how viewers should access the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. Use the values YouTube provides for the broadcast. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Start the playout and encoder. Make sure the playlist is playing and the encoder is sending a signal to YouTube.
- Check Live Control Room preview. Wait for YouTube to show the incoming preview and check picture, audio, and continuity before going live.
- Start the scheduled event. When the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room as instructed by YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Test continuity, interruptions and replays
Run a long test before promoting the channel. A short successful start does not establish that a playlist and encoder will survive a full day of playback.
- Confirm that the playlist advances through multiple entries and that audio and video remain synchronized.
- Test a missing or inaccessible entry, a source outage, a playout restart, an encoder restart, and a network interruption. Record what viewers see and how the system resumes.
- Monitor the incoming signal in Live Control Room during the test, and arrange an appropriate way to notice problems when no one is watching the control screen.
- Decide how to handle a dropped connection or failed source. Recovery depends on the playout and encoder setup; verify the actual behavior rather than treating reconnection as guaranteed.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not plan on one automatic archive for an uninterrupted 24/7 session. If replays matter, make separate recordings or establish controlled event boundaries, and verify the resulting archives in Studio. See YouTube’s live stream setup and archive guidance.

Pick a playout approach that actually supports your M3U
YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists software, cloud services and hardware, but that listing does not establish that every option can ingest arbitrary M3U playlists. Confirm playlist parsing and source-format compatibility directly for your specific setup.
- Software on your own computer: OBS is listed by YouTube as open-source software at no charge. It can be an encoder component, but do not assume that it provides the M3U playlist scheduling and unattended playout you need; verify the required integration.
- Hosted cloud tools: YouTube’s directory lists Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams. The directory does not confirm arbitrary M3U input compatibility, and no prices or terms are established here. Check the provider’s current capabilities against your playlist.
- Hardware encoder: YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus among verified hardware encoders and describes PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. The listing does not say it accepts arbitrary M3U playlists; confirm that before choosing it.
These products serve different roles: an encoder transmits a feed, while a playout system must interpret and play the playlist. You may need a compatible playout tool plus an encoder, rather than one device or app doing both. YouTube’s current directory is at YouTube Live verified solutions.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only stream media you are entitled to broadcast. A playlist’s availability or inclusion in an M3U file does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast its contents. Review the rights for every item and check YouTube’s current live-stream and channel policies before launch. Reused or third-party material can create copyright claims or other channel-policy problems; do not treat continuous playback as an exception to those rules.
For a final pre-launch check, use the copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or its server URL or stream key is wrong. | Recheck the URL and key against the scheduled stream, confirm the encoder is running, and wait for the incoming preview before clicking Go live. |
| The M3U opens but a playlist item will not play | The source format, access requirements, or source availability is incompatible with the playout tool. | Test that entry by itself, verify authorized access, and confirm the tool supports its specific format. Do not infer that all entries will work because one does. |
| The stream starts but stops at an item boundary | The playout system may not advance automatically or may fail on an unavailable entry. | Test playlist transitions and failure handling; configure a fallback or alert if available. |
| Audio is missing or picture and sound do not match | The source or the playout-to-encoder integration may not be handling its audio/video correctly. | Test each source and the complete output path before launch; verify both the encoder output and YouTube preview. |
| The broadcast disconnects during a long run | A source, encoder, or network interruption may have stopped transmission. | Identify which part stopped, test its restart behavior, and plan monitoring and recovery for that failure point. |
| No replay appears after a 24/7 run | YouTube Help’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a promise of one archive for longer continuous sessions. | Use separate recordings or controlled event boundaries if you need replays, and verify the archive after each event. |
