For the lowest-risk starting point, build your playlist from tracks downloaded through YouTube Studio’s Audio Library. Check each track’s attribution requirement and include the supplied credit when required. If you use music from another source, verify that its license covers continuous YouTube livestreaming, looping, archived streams, monetization and your territories—and arrange Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner before you go live. A “royalty-free” label or a license alone does not guarantee that YouTube will let the stream continue uninterrupted.

Choose music for the actual use

“Copyright-safe” is not a label that guarantees a track will avoid claims. YouTube defines safe music as public-domain music or music you have permission to use from the copyright owner. Its guidance says that only music and sound effects from the Audio Library are known to YouTube to be copyright-safe. That is platform guidance, not a universal legal determination or a promise that a particular use is lawful in every country. YouTube Help: Tips to find safe music; Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library.

Start with YouTube Studio’s Audio Library

Audio Library tracks are the simplest documented option for a YouTube playlist. Some require attribution under a Creative Commons license; others do not. Check the details for every track rather than assuming one rule applies to the whole library.

Do not treat Creator Music as a livestream catalog

YouTube says Creator Music licenses are not for live streams. Its documented availability is for creators in the YouTube Partner Program in the United States, with expansion outside the U.S. pending in the cited guidance. Track terms and territories vary. YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ also states that paid licenses were deprecated on August 10, 2026, with the catalog shifting toward no-cost licenses and revenue sharing; check the current interface and terms before relying on it. Evaluate third-party, original, and public-domain music carefully

Music from a paid or “royalty-free” catalog may work if the actual license grants the rights your channel needs. Original music can be an option if all contributors and recording rights are cleared. Public-domain and Creative Commons music may also be usable, but verify the relevant composition and recording rights, license conditions, attribution and jurisdiction. None of these categories, by itself, guarantees that YouTube will not make a claim or interrupt a live stream.

Source What it may offer Important limitation for an always-on live channel
YouTube Audio Library Music and sound effects YouTube identifies as copyright-safe for YouTube videos; track details show attribution requirements. Check each track’s attribution. Uses outside the applicable terms and legal questions beyond YouTube’s platform handling are separate.
Creator Music Track-specific licenses or revenue-sharing terms for eligible videos. Not licensed for live streams or Shorts; availability and terms vary. Check current Creator Music guidance and the track’s terms.
Third-party royalty-free or paid catalog May provide music when the license grants the needed rights. The label does not establish permission for live transmission, repeated use, archives, monetization, territories or Content ID handling. Allowlisting may be needed.
Original music Music created for or by the channel may be usable. Clear rights for all contributors and the recording; confirm the production agreements cover the intended uses.
Public-domain or Creative Commons music May be usable under the applicable status or license. Verify rights, attribution, license conditions and jurisdiction; platform claims are still possible.

Build the playlist and keep a rights record

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Audio Library. Search and filter by genre, mood, duration and attribution to find tracks suited to the channel and the way its playlist will repeat.
  2. Check every track’s license details. Note the title, artist, source or download, license or usage terms, required attribution and any stated limits. Keeping this information with production records is practical recordkeeping, not a YouTube-prescribed form.
  3. Copy required Creative Commons attribution. For an Audio Library track that requires attribution, copy the text from its license panel and put it in the video description as required. Do not assume a “Music in this video” section replaces that obligation. YouTube Audio Library guidance.
  4. For outside music, read the actual license before adding the track. Confirm permission for continuous live transmission, looping or repeated use, archived streams or VODs, your territories, the channel, and monetization if applicable. Check the license term, cancellation conditions, attribution duties and whether it covers both the composition and the sound recording.
  5. Ask about Content ID allowlisting. Contact the rights owner or provider and request that your channel be added to its allowlist before broadcasting. Keep written confirmation. Test the licensed setup with a short stream before depending on it for an always-on channel.
  6. Review the playlist before going live. Remove tracks whose rights are unclear or whose license does not cover the planned use. A credit in the description does not override Content ID detection.

Why a licensed track can still interrupt a live stream

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may issue a warning, replace the stream content, interrupt the broadcast or terminate it. YouTube specifically warns that a stream can be interrupted even when the creator has licensed the content if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Monitor YouTube Studio during the broadcast and check the archived stream after it ends. Live detection can affect the broadcast itself, and a Content ID claim may appear on the archive later. If a track is flagged or its license is uncertain, stop using it until you resolve the rights issue. A dispute or a description credit alone does not establish permission.

Handle exceptions and unclear rights cautiously

Copyright exceptions, including fair use or equivalent doctrines, depend on the facts and the law that applies in the relevant jurisdiction. Public-domain status also needs to be checked rather than assumed, particularly where composition and recording rights may differ. YouTube lists possible routes for using content but says none guarantees avoiding a copyright claim or strike. For uncertain or consequential rights questions, consult a qualified legal professional; YouTube’s guidance is not legal advice. YouTube Help: Tips to find safe music; Copyright on YouTube.
