For YouTube Live with H.264 in FFmpeg, use constant bitrate (CBR), set the maximum GOP to two seconds of frames, and choose a bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you actually send. That means -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings provide the bitrate targets; FFmpeg’s libx264 documentation explains the GOP and bitrate controls.
Choose the bitrate for the stream you are sending
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, checked against its current guidance on October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not a promise of a particular picture quality. Match both the resolution and frame rate of your outgoing stream; do not use the source file’s resolution if you are scaling it to a different output.

YouTube’s table also gives minimum H.264 bitrates. For example, it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60. Aim for the recommended value when your encoder and stable upload capacity can sustain it. The H.264 figures do not apply automatically to H.265/HEVC or AV1; YouTube publishes different recommendations for those codecs.
Set a two-second GOP in FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s libx264 -g option sets the maximum GOP size in frames. Convert YouTube’s two-second interval into frames by multiplying the output frame rate by two:

- At 30 fps:
30 × 2 = 60, so use-g 60. - At 60 fps:
60 × 2 = 120, so use-g 120.
For other frame rates, use the same calculation. The GOP setting is measured in frames, not seconds. YouTube’s wording is “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.”
Example: stream 1080p30 H.264 with RTMPS
This command targets YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps video bitrate for 1080p30 and uses a 60-frame maximum GOP. Replace input with your media source and the destination with your YouTube Live RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Keep the stream key private.

-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'The equal target, minimum, and maximum rates request CBR using FFmpeg’s bitrate controls. FFmpeg requires -bufsize when using -maxrate; buffer size affects rate-control behavior, so choose it for your encoder workflow rather than treating one value as a YouTube-wide requirement. Consult the FFmpeg codec documentation for the controls supported by your installed build.
For 1080p60, use -r 60, -g 120, and YouTube’s recommended 17 Mbps video target. Do not add or change -r merely to make the command match a number: forcing a different frame rate changes the output and may duplicate or discard frames. Set the output rate only when it matches your intended stream.

Check the other settings that affect ingest
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS. The example uses an RTMPS destination in the usual FFmpeg FLV output workflow.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. This command is specifically for H.264 through libx264; use the bitrate guidance for the codec you actually send.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps for stereo. For 5.1 audio it lists 384 kbps and says 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
- Advanced video settings: YouTube recommends progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Use settings that are compatible with your source and encoder rather than applying them blindly.
Verify keyframe spacing and stream health
-g specifies the maximum GOP size. It does not, by itself, guarantee identical keyframe spacing under every encoder configuration: scene-cut behavior and other settings can affect placement. If your workflow requires a strictly fixed interval, verify the selected encoder’s keyframe and scene-cut behavior for the FFmpeg/libx264 build you installed. FFmpeg documents keyint_min as the minimum GOP size; setting minimum and maximum values should be deliberate and tested with your chosen encoder.
- Run a test stream with representative gameplay, motion, and audio before the broadcast that matters.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators while the test is running, and confirm that the sent resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate match your plan.
- Check that your available upload capacity can sustain the video bitrate plus audio and transport overhead. YouTube recommends using a speed test to check upload bitrate; a fluctuating connection can still cause trouble even if a speed test briefly reaches the target.
Troubleshoot common configuration problems
- YouTube reports an incorrect or unstable bitrate: Confirm that
-b:v,-minrate, and-maxrateagree for the intended CBR target, and that your connection can sustain the selected rate. If needed, choose a lower supported resolution/frame-rate pair and its corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation. - Keyframes appear too far apart: Recalculate GOP frames as output fps × 2. Check the output frame rate and encoder behavior;
-g 60means two seconds only at 30 fps, and scene-cut behavior can affect actual spacing. - The stream has unexpected motion judder or duplicated frames: Check whether
-ris forcing a frame rate different from the source or intended output. Remove the conversion or make it intentional and test again. - FFmpeg errors when using
-maxrate: Add a workflow-appropriate-bufsize; FFmpeg requires it with-maxrate. - No stream reaches YouTube: Verify the ingest URL and stream key in the command, ensure the key is not malformed or exposed, and use YouTube’s stream health feedback to diagnose ingest issues.
