OBS automatic reconnect can recover some network interruptions while OBS is still running; it cannot restart OBS after the application closes. To keep a YouTube broadcast going through an OBS crash, arrange a recovery path outside OBS—such as a separately configured backup encoder—and test that YouTube actually switches to it. If you only need to recover from a brief connection drop, OBS’s reconnect setting may be enough. These are different failure cases, so plan and rehearse them separately.
First identify what stopped working
A stream can fail because the network drops, OBS exits, or the encoder feed disappears while the YouTube event remains open. The fix depends on which happened:
- Network interruption, OBS still open: OBS may retry its output connection if automatic reconnect is enabled. This does not guarantee YouTube will preserve every broadcast state.
- OBS crashes or closes: OBS is no longer running and cannot reconnect itself. Something outside the process must detect the exit and relaunch it, or another encoder must provide the feed.
- Continuous program output is essential: A separately running backup encoder can provide a second feed, but YouTube failover must be configured and tested. A spare device by itself does not ensure an automatic switch.
An OBS forum user described having to check a 24/7 webcam stream and manually stop and restart OBS after losing internet. That account illustrates the operational burden, not a rule that applies to every YouTube event or configuration.
Set up OBS automatic reconnect for network drops
Use this for a connection interruption when OBS remains open. OBS lists automatic reconnect among its Advanced settings. The retry count and starting retry interval are output behaviors, and reconnect support can depend on the output; retries are not proof of indefinite recovery or of YouTube event recovery.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the automatic reconnect controls.
- Enable automatic reconnect. Choose a retry count and retry delay suited to the interruption window you expect; avoid treating any setting as a guarantee that a long outage will be covered.
- Test by interrupting the network while OBS remains open. Watch OBS’s output status and the YouTube Live Control Room, then confirm actual viewer playback resumes.
OBS documents an output API with a retry count and starting retry interval for outputs that support reconnect. The documentation does not establish that retries continue forever or that every YouTube broadcast state will be retained. See OBS Project documentation.
Recover if the OBS process exits
Once OBS has closed, its automatic reconnect setting cannot help: no OBS process remains to retry the output. A watchdog or operating-system task can be part of a relaunch plan. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter, but that parameter only starts streaming as part of launching OBS; it is not a complete crash-detection, broadcast-selection, or verification system.

- Configure an external supervisor to detect that the intended OBS instance has exited and relaunch that instance with its established profile and scene collection.
- If appropriate for your setup, use OBS’s documented
--startstreaminglaunch parameter so the relaunched instance starts its streaming output. - Verify that OBS has selected the intended scene and YouTube event, and that the Live Control Room receives the expected feed. A restarted encoder process alone does not confirm that the correct event is receiving video and audio.
- Rehearse the full failure and recovery sequence on an unlisted or otherwise suitable test event before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
The OBS documentation describes a launch building block, not an end-to-end recovery guarantee. Your supervisor must handle detection and relaunch, and your test must establish what happens to the YouTube event in your own configuration. See OBS Project documentation.
Use a separate backup encoder for continuity
If viewers need a continuing program feed despite an OBS failure, configure a backup encoder that does not depend on the failed OBS process. Where practical, avoid sharing the component most likely to fail—for example, the same computer or network connection. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup.

- Set up the primary and backup encoders for the intended YouTube event, following YouTube’s encoder and event configuration guidance.
- Run a rehearsal and confirm both feeds are accepted in the intended configuration.
- Stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, as YouTube suggests for a failover test.
- Check the viewer-facing player, not just the backup device. Confirm that playback rolls over and that the audio, video, and transition are acceptable.
- Restore the primary feed and test how the system behaves when it returns. Document who monitors the event and what to do if the switch does not happen.
“For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” — YouTube Help, YouTube live streaming tips
YouTube’s guidance supports testing the failover path; it does not establish a universal switch time or guarantee that a particular hardware or software combination will take over hands-free. Compare setups by their independence from the primary encoder, network and power, the continuity of audio and video, transition behavior, monitoring needs, complexity, and cost—not by an assumed reliability percentage.

Check YouTube Live Control Room and stream selection
YouTube’s Live Control Room has auto-start and auto-stop choices that affect whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. Inspect those controls for the event and rehearse the exact scheduled or live workflow you will use. The right choice depends on how that event is managed; do not assume an OBS restart will produce the same result across every event setup.
If OBS restarts but YouTube does not show the expected feed, check the Live Control Room and confirm the intended event or stream is selected before changing credentials. A stream key is the encoder’s credential and destination information for sending a feed. YouTube documents resetting a key when it is compromised, not as a routine crash-recovery step. See YouTube Help on stream keys.

Rehearse, monitor, and end the event deliberately
- Use an unlisted or otherwise suitable test event for recovery drills.
- Check the preview and viewer playback, stream-health indicators, audio and video, and any local recording that is part of your recovery plan.
- Monitor stream health during production. YouTube advises testing before going live and verifying local archive files when recording is part of the workflow.
- When the broadcast is over, stop the encoder content and end the event deliberately. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive guidance is not a promise that an interrupted broadcast will resume.
See YouTube live streaming tips and YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions for the platform’s setup and production guidance.
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is open, but the feed does not return after a brief outage. | Automatic reconnect may be off, its retry window may have elapsed, or the output may not support the expected retry behavior. | Review OBS automatic reconnect settings and output status. Test with a brief network interruption, then verify playback in YouTube rather than assuming OBS’s status means the event recovered. |
| OBS has closed and the stream is still down. | Automatic reconnect cannot act after the process exits. | Use an external relaunch mechanism or a separately configured backup encoder. Test detection, startup, event selection, and viewer playback as one sequence. |
| OBS relaunches, but YouTube shows the wrong feed or no feed. | The event or stream selection may be wrong, or the Live Control Room workflow may not match the restart behavior. | Check the Live Control Room and intended event first. Verify the selected OBS profile and stream destination before changing the key. |
| The backup encoder is running, but viewers do not see a switch. | A running backup does not itself prove YouTube is configured to fail over or that the player is receiving it. | Repeat YouTube’s failover rehearsal: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player rolls over. |
| The stream ends cleanly but the creator expects it to resume automatically. | Archiving and event-ending behavior are separate from interruption recovery. | Check auto-start and auto-stop choices and rehearse the exact event workflow. End a completed broadcast deliberately; do not rely on archive behavior as recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel without depending on OBS staying open at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed, and StreamNeo streams to YouTube.
