If an encoder-based YouTube livestream stops when your computer sleeps, keep the computer awake for the entire stream. You can still turn off the display: on Windows 11, screen-off and sleep are separate settings. Also check laptop lid and power-button actions, which can trigger sleep independently of the idle timeout. Keep the computer plugged in where possible, then verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the change.
Why sleep disconnects an encoder-based YouTube stream
An encoder such as OBS sends video and audio to YouTube through the configured stream URL and key. If the computer running the encoder goes to sleep, it cannot keep sending that feed. Turning off the display is different: the screen can go dark while the computer remains awake and the encoder continues running.
This applies to streams that depend on software running on the computer. If you start a stream another way—for example, with a browser webcam workflow—identify that workflow before applying encoder-specific assumptions. A timeout change also cannot establish that sleep was the cause if the stream still disconnects while the computer is awake.
Prevent sleep on Windows 11
Set the plugged-in sleep timeout
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Find the plugged-in control labeled Make my device sleep after and set it so the computer will not sleep during the planned stream. Keep the computer connected to power if you are relying on this plugged-in setting.
- Choose the plugged-in screen-off timeout separately. The display may turn off while the computer stays awake.
- Check the values again while the device is plugged in. Windows has separate battery and plugged-in settings, so changing one does not establish the behavior of the other.
Microsoft’s published Windows 11 defaults illustrate why checking the actual setting matters. These are defaults, not universal settings: users can change them, and device configuration differs.

Check what closing the lid or pressing the power button does
A laptop can sleep when its lid closes or its power button is pressed, even if you changed the idle sleep timeout. Microsoft notes that this behavior applies to many PCs, especially laptops and tablets. Check the lid-close and power-button actions in Windows power settings, and do not close the lid or press the button during the stream unless you have confirmed those actions will not put your device to sleep.
Prevent sleep on a Mac
Apple documents a power setting for supported Macs that prevents automatic sleep while the display is off. On a Mac laptop, look in Battery settings for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. On a Mac desktop, look in Energy settings for Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Keep the Mac connected to power when relying on a power-adapter setting.

Availability and navigation can vary by Mac model and macOS version. Confirm that the relevant control is present on your device, and verify the stream after changing it rather than assuming every Mac behaves the same way.
Verify the stream before leaving the computer unattended
- Before starting, confirm that YouTube Live Control Room shows the expected preview and that the event can be accessed.
- Start the stream and check the live watch page. Confirm that video and audio are arriving as expected.
- After the screen turns off—or after the lid or power-button behavior you intend to use—check the stream again. A changed power setting is not proof that the stream is still live.
- During the stream, continue monitoring the feed. If your encoder workflow provides a local recording, monitor that too.
- When the event has ended on YouTube, stop the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder guidance emphasizes previewing the stream, checking event access, monitoring audio and video, and stopping the encoder after the event ends. It does not promise that a stream will survive a sleeping host computer.

Troubleshoot a stream that still disconnects
