FFmpeg’s exit code 1 does not identify why a YouTube live stream failed. Find the first specific error in the complete FFmpeg output, then determine whether the failure occurred while opening the input, selecting or encoding streams, creating the output, or sending data to YouTube. If FFmpeg is sending data, check the stream health message in YouTube Live Control Room; it can point to an ingest setting that needs attention.
Capture the error before changing settings
Keep the full terminal output, especially standard error (stderr). The last line—often a general failure or exit message—may only report that the process stopped. Look earlier for the first specific error and note when it appears: before an input opens, during encoder setup, while creating the output, or after FFmpeg starts sending packets.
- Record the FFmpeg build. Run
ffmpeg -versionand save the output. Available encoders and options depend on the installed build. - Save a report. FFmpeg’s
-reportoption writes a report containing the command line and log output. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for its use. - Protect the stream key. Reports and output URLs may contain credentials. Replace the YouTube stream key with a placeholder before sharing a command or report publicly; treat the original report as sensitive.
- Keep the exact command and input details. Preserve option order and record the input type and the point at which the process fails. Redact credentials without removing other diagnostic details.
Do not infer a codec, key, network, or input problem from code 1 alone. The exact cause is unresolved until the full error output and command are examined.
Check which input or output each option controls
FFmpeg’s command structure matters: it reads inputs, applies filters or transcoding, then writes outputs. The FFmpeg command-line documentation states that options apply only to the next input or output file and reset between files. Review the command from left to right, including every -i and the YouTube output URL.

- Put input-specific options before the input they configure.
- Put output codec, bitrate, and muxer options with the intended output.
- Check that each
-mapselection refers to a stream that actually exists in the input. - Confirm that options intended for YouTube’s output appear after the relevant input and before that output URL.
A setting in the wrong position may affect a different file or stream. Avoid adding flags without evidence: changing bitrate cannot fix an input that will not open, and changing a stream key cannot fix an encoder initialization error.
Follow the first error to the failing stage
Input opening or probing
If the log says the input cannot be opened, check the path or capture device, permissions, and input protocol. A “no such file” or similar message points first to the path or access. If FFmpeg cannot detect streams or reports missing codec parameters, investigate input format and probing. Where practical, try to read the source independently. These are diagnostic directions to verify against the actual message, not a universal explanation for code 1.

Stream mapping or encoder initialization
Check that the mapped audio and video streams exist, and compare them with the selected encoders and output options. Look for errors that name an unavailable encoder, unsupported pixel format or profile, incompatible dimensions or frame rate, or an option that was not used. If the command selects hardware encoding, verify that this FFmpeg build provides that encoder and that the required device and runtime are available; a command mentioning a GPU does not establish that support is present.
Output creation, muxing, or connection
With the stream key redacted, inspect the output protocol and the specific error. Distinguish a local output or muxer initialization failure from a connection rejection, timeout, or broken connection. Investigate the key, YouTube event setup, or connectivity when the failure is at the output stage or YouTube reports that it is not receiving a valid stream. Never post an output URL containing a live key.

When FFmpeg sends data, read YouTube’s stream health messages
YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room show stream errors beside the health indicator and timestamp them. The YouTube live streaming error messages page describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Follow the message and the current encoder guidance rather than applying a copied command blindly.
Format and codecs
Use the codec guidance that matches the message and ingestion context. YouTube’s live error guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio in its incorrect-format guidance, while its current encoder settings guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. Audio messages list AAC or MP3 as supported choices. If the health message names a codec or format, use that specific issue and the applicable encoder settings page to choose a fix.

Audio and video stream shape
Check the number of audio and video streams, their codecs, and the event’s selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS settings specify 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 kbps stereo audio; its API issue guidance also lists 48 kHz as a recommended sample rate in its own context. Resolve any discrepancy by following the exact health message and applicable protocol guidance. For video, confirm that the stream is progressive and uses the expected resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.
Keyframe interval and bitrate
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 frames per second, two seconds is 60 frames. YouTube’s error guidance notes that ingest errors can themselves lead to incorrect GOP sizes and that a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding.

Choose bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; it is not a universal value. For example, the YouTube RTMP/RTMPS table accessed in 2026 lists, for 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 minimum and recommended video bitrates of 5 Mbps and 14 Mbps, respectively, and AV1/H.265 minimum and recommended bitrates of 4 Mbps and 10 Mbps. Those figures apply to that row, not every stream. If available upload bandwidth is insufficient for the selected resolution, YouTube’s error guidance suggests lowering the resolution. Test before the event and monitor stream health while live, as YouTube advises.
Primary and backup ingestion
If you send primary and backup streams, their settings must match. YouTube specifies matching resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. Check both outputs when the health message identifies a mismatch.
API-based monitoring
If you use the YouTube Live Streaming API, its status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[] field lists configuration issues. Use the reported issue type and actual and expected values when available instead of treating a generic message as a unique FFmpeg error. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Compare configurations without muddying the evidence
If you need to compare candidate settings, change one variable at a time and record the result. Otherwise, a run that changes codec, bitrate, and resolution together cannot show which change mattered.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Reading only the final exit line: find the first specific error earlier in the complete log.
- Changing unrelated settings: match the fix to the failing stage; output bitrate is irrelevant if the input cannot open.
- Assuming a stream-key problem: investigate credentials or event configuration when the output log or YouTube health status points there.
- Copying a setting without checking context: verify option order, protocol, codec, resolution, and frame rate, then use YouTube’s current guidance for that combination.
- Sharing a report unredacted: remove the stream key from the command and output URL before posting logs.
