YouTube’s Auto-stop setting does not replay a finished file: the encoder must keep sending video for the broadcast to continue.
Why the live broadcast ends when the file finishes
There are three separate parts: the video file, the encoder that plays and sends it, and the YouTube broadcast that receives the encoder’s feed. YouTube does not restart a local file when it reaches the end. The encoder must keep producing and sending video, which source looping does by restarting playback.
YouTube’s encoder guide says to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream. With automatic stop enabled, the Live Streaming API documentation says YouTube ends the broadcast about a minute after video transmission stops. Loop one video in OBS
- In OBS, select the scene containing the prerecorded video.
- In the Sources list, open the video source’s properties.
- For a Media Source playing one file, enable Loop, then confirm the setting.
- Start or continue the stream from OBS. Check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the incoming stream remains active after the file reaches its end.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes playback controls and options affecting what happens when playback ends. Labels and controls can vary by OBS version, so if the installed interface differs, check the source properties and the documentation for that version. OBS Media Sources documentation

Loop a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In the Sources list, add a VLC Video source and configure its media playlist.
- Open the source’s properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Start or continue the stream, then check YouTube Live Control Room to verify that the incoming feed continues through the end of the playlist.

Choose the right OBS source

Auto-start and Auto-stop are not looping controls
Keep YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings in their intended roles: they let the encoder start or stop the broadcast. They do not restart a local source after it reaches the end. If the source finishes and the encoder stops sending video, changing those broadcast controls will not make the file play again. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide

Troubleshoot a stream that still stops or goes blank
- The stream ends at the same point each time: Reopen the source properties and confirm that Loop is on for a Media Source or Loop Playlist is on for a VLC Video source.
- The broadcast remains live, but the picture disappears: Check the source’s playback and visibility behavior. OBS documents options that can hide a source or stop media playback after completion or when the source is not visible.
- VLC Video is missing from the source list: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The encoder stops sending content: Fix the source or encoder playback first. YouTube treats transmission ending as the end of the stream; Auto-stop can end the broadcast after transmission ceases.
Plan for long broadcasts separately
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Archiving does not loop a finished source or keep the encoder sending video; it is not a workaround for a source that has ended. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide
