To keep one image on screen while the audio changes, use an encoder to send a YouTube Live feed: set the still image as the visual source and choose the audio source or playlist separately. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key in Live Control Room; the encoder combines and sends the feed. Exact controls for switching among audio files or inputs depend on the encoder and audio source, so test those transitions before broadcasting.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has live streaming enabled, and has no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- An encoder that can send a live feed to YouTube and keep the selected image and audio sources in its output. YouTube describes encoder setup in its Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guide.
- A still image and audio you have permission to use in a live broadcast and any resulting archive.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full video-and-audio bitrate.
Set up the still image and changing audio
- Enable and check live streaming. Sign in to YouTube and confirm the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. If you have just requested access, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See Manage live stream settings.
- Connect your encoder. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming or destination settings. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted version of RTMP in its RTMPS guide.
- Set the image as the visual source. Add the still image as the encoder’s image or media source, size it to fill the output frame, and make sure it stays visible for the intended broadcast. The precise source settings depend on your encoder.
- Choose the audio separately. Add the intended audio input, files, or playlist. For prerecorded tracks, check how the encoder advances to the next file and what happens when a file ends; for live audio, check the input device and levels. YouTube’s encoder guides do not prescribe controls for these source-specific behaviors, so verify that changes occur as intended in your chosen software.
- Match your output to YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps using AAC or MP3. Video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps at 720p30.
- Preview and test the complete output. Before publishing, check that the image is framed correctly, audio is audible and clean, and transitions between tracks or inputs work. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to what the stream will contain, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Even when the image is static, the audio path and encoder output need testing.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Go live from the encoder or Live Control Room according to your setup. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and listen for gaps, clipping, or unexpected source changes.
Choose settings and bandwidth that fit your stream
Resolution, codec, and bitrate
Choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder and connection can sustain. A static image does not eliminate video bitrate requirements: the encoder still sends a video stream. Use the bitrate recommendation for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s settings table. The cited 1080p30 and 720p30 figures are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not guarantees that those settings suit every connection.
Upload headroom
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Test the actual upload connection and leave capacity for network variation; congestion or an interruption can disrupt the broadcast. If the encoder reports dropped frames or YouTube shows poor stream health, lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again.
RTMPS or HLS
For a conventional encoder setup, RTMPS is a suitable default when available. HLS is an alternative for compatible encoders or workflows, but it requires more specific configuration: YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments in TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT delivery. HLS disables ultra-low latency and has higher latency because it sends segments. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. Use HLS only when your encoder or workflow calls for it; otherwise, the regular RTMP/RTMPS path is simpler.

Check music rights before going live
You need the rights to use every track in the live broadcast and any saved archive. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for use on Google services, including music licensing rights. A track being available online, or being paired with a still image, does not by itself make it safe to broadcast.
YouTube says an active-stream copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast can lead to live-streaming restrictions. Review how to avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming and resolve rights concerns before starting.

Troubleshoot common problems
You cannot start a live stream
Check that the channel is verified, live streaming is enabled, and there is no restriction on the account. If this is the first enablement request, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Confirm the stream URL and key match the stream in Live Control Room, then check that the encoder is connected and sending. If you changed or reset the stream key, update the encoder too. Keep the key private.

The image appears, but the audio is missing or wrong
Check the encoder’s selected audio source, input level, mute state, and routing. For files or playlists, test the transition and end-of-file behavior before going live; controls vary by encoder and source.
Audio is distorted, uneven, or interrupted
Check input levels for clipping, confirm the intended sample rate and audio codec settings, and test the same source sequence you plan to broadcast. Listen to the preview rather than relying only on meters.

The stream health is poor or the feed drops
Check upload capacity against the total bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected output, and check for network congestion or interruptions.
Live streaming becomes restricted
Review YouTube’s restriction guidance and check for copyright notices, strikes, or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast. Do not restart with the same disputed material until you have addressed the rights issue.
