How to Restart a YouTube 24/7 Stream Automatically After a Power Outage

A local stream needs power recovery, Windows startup, OBS, network readiness, and YouTube settings all working together. Here’s how to configure and test the chain.

You can configure a local YouTube stream to recover after a power outage, but no single setting does it all. Power must return, the PC must turn itself on, Windows must launch OBS, the network must be ready, OBS must begin streaming, and YouTube must accept the feed. Set up and test each link. YouTube’s Auto-start helps control the final handoff; it does not power on your PC or launch OBS.

What has to happen for the stream to restart

A successful automatic recovery depends on several independent parts working in sequence. A failure at any link can leave the channel offline even if the others are configured correctly.

  • Power: AC power returns and the computer is set to turn on after an outage.
  • Startup: Windows starts and launches OBS, with OBS configured to begin streaming.
  • Network: The router and internet connection are ready when OBS attempts to connect.
  • YouTube: The encoder sends video to the right stream URL with a valid stream key, and the stream settings allow encoder-controlled start.

There is no universal recovery time or guarantee across PCs, firmware, Windows setups, networks, and YouTube sessions. Verify the complete chain on your own equipment.

Configure the PC and OBS to start streaming

1. Set the PC to power on when electricity returns

Open your PC or motherboard UEFI/BIOS settings and look for an AC power recovery option. Common labels include “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Back,” and “After Power Failure.” Choose the option that turns the machine on when power returns. Names, locations, and availability vary, so use the computer or motherboard manual rather than assuming a particular menu path.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Make Windows launch OBS and start the stream

An OBS Project forum reply describes two Windows approaches: add --startstreaming to an OBS shortcut and place the shortcut in the Windows Startup folder, or use Task Scheduler. This is community guidance, not a guarantee for every OBS release or Windows configuration. Test after a reboot and confirm OBS actually begins encoding and streaming.

Do not assume that a successful OBS launch means the stream is live: the computer may start before the router or internet connection is ready. If so, a delayed launch or a retry/check script may be needed. Test the timing on the actual PC and network equipment.

Configure YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder

3. Enable Auto-start for the stream

In YouTube Studio, open the stream in Live Control Room and enable Auto-start in its settings. YouTube explains: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” Auto-start governs whether the encoder can start or stop the stream; it does not boot the computer or open OBS. When you reuse a stream’s settings, YouTube also copies its Auto-start and Auto-stop selections. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

4. Check the stream URL and key in OBS

Make sure OBS is configured with the YouTube stream URL and the correct stream key. YouTube describes the key as the information the encoder uses to send the feed. Treat it like a password. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the encoder with its replacement or OBS may no longer be able to connect. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Account for network delays and short outages

Network startup order

A PC can reach its startup task before a modem, router, or internet service is ready. An OBS forum reply recommends delaying or retrying the OBS launch, or using a script that waits for connectivity. That approach is community advice; check that it works on your own setup. An encoder’s reconnection behavior after an established stream drops is not the same as its first connection attempt when the network is still unavailable.

UPS for brief power interruptions

A UPS can keep the PC and network gear running through a brief outage, depending on the connected load and available battery runtime. It cannot promise an uninterrupted broadcast, and it does not replace startup configuration if an outage outlasts the battery. Choose capacity based on your equipment and the runtime you need; no universal model or runtime is established here.

Test the whole recovery chain

  1. Restart Windows normally. Verify that OBS opens, begins encoding, and connects to YouTube.
  2. Check the network-delay case. If your router takes longer to recover than the PC, test whether the configured delay or retry gets OBS connected once internet access is available.
  3. Test a brief power interruption when safe. Confirm the firmware setting powers on the PC and that Windows, OBS, the network, and YouTube each recover as expected.
  4. Verify the result in two places. Check YouTube Live Control Room and the public watch page to confirm the broadcast is live.

Do not treat a successful normal reboot as proof that recovery after a longer outage will also work: network startup and UPS runtime can change the result.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the 24/7 broadcast is a loop of uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, a cloud service avoids relying on a powered home PC. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

Keep YouTube’s live-stream rules in mind

Restart automation only restores the broadcast connection; it does not establish that the content is permitted or suitable for monetization. Make sure you have the rights to the video and audio you stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules for your channel. YouTube’s live-stream help notes that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an operational threshold, not a guarantee about recovery or uninterrupted broadcasting.
