You can run a 24/7 sleep-sounds YouTube stream from a spare laptop with streaming access enabled on your channel, audio and visuals you have the rights to use, and an encoder such as OBS. The laptop must remain powered, awake, connected to the internet and running the encoder for the stream to continue. YouTube may not save a single stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so plan separately if you need a replay.
Check that your channel can go live
Before configuring the laptop, make sure your YouTube channel is verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s encoder-streaming requirements include having no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days and being at least 16 years old. First-time access to live streaming can take up to 24 hours to activate, so do not leave setup until the intended start time.
You will need access to YouTube Studio’s live-streaming controls and an encoder on the laptop. This guide uses OBS as a workflow example; the exact appearance and controls may change between software versions.
Clear the rights to your sleep sounds and visuals
Use audio and visuals that you created or are authorized to use for a YouTube live stream. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for obtaining the necessary rights on the creator. That can include music and public-performance rights, as well as rights to visual material.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have permission, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to prevent a claim from interrupting the broadcast. A “royalty-free” label by itself does not establish that a track is cleared for live streaming, archives, every territory, or monetization.
Keep records of licenses and permissions. Before using licensed material, check whether the license covers live broadcasts, saved replays, the territories where viewers may watch, monetization, and Content ID allowlisting.

Prepare the spare laptop and OBS scene
- Install and open OBS. Use the current OBS release for your operating system. This guide does not assume a particular laptop specification; no minimum hardware configuration is established here. Test your actual laptop with the audio and visual material you intend to stream.
- Create a scene for the stream. Add your sleep-sound audio and a still image or looping visual. Configure the media source to repeat if you want the content to cycle. OBS controls can change, so check the current OBS documentation for the precise loop-source control in your version.
- Check the audio path. Confirm that the intended source is active in OBS, that its level is audible without clipping, and that other desktop sounds or notifications will not be sent accidentally.
- Keep the laptop awake. Change the operating system’s power settings so it does not sleep while plugged in. The exact menu path varies by operating system and version. Keep the laptop connected to power and give it unobstructed ventilation; test the arrangement rather than assuming it can handle a long run.
- Plan the network connection. A wired Ethernet connection is an option where practical, but it cannot prevent router, ISP, or power failures. If the laptop has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is only useful if you can connect it to a wired network.
Set a sensible encoder bitrate and test it
For a low-motion image, 1080p at 30 fps is a reasonable starting point to test. YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendation for 1080p30 is 5 Mbps video bitrate. This is a recommendation, not proof that a particular laptop or connection can sustain the stream. The right setting depends on your scene, encoder, and available upload capacity.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% network headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, if the video bitrate is 5 Mbps, allow for at least 6 Mbps of stable upload capacity for that video rate alone, with additional room for audio and other network use. A connection that only reaches the target in a brief speed test may not remain stable over a long broadcast.

Before going public, test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS’s connection or dropped-frame signals. If the stream is unstable, reduce the bitrate or output settings, limit competing network traffic, and test again. Do not treat one successful short test as a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream
- Create a live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the live-streaming controls and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the encoder setup shown in YouTube Studio, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding streaming settings in OBS.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not post it or share it publicly. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm that the picture and sound arrive in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Review stream health before making the stream public or relying on it for a long run.
- Use YouTube’s controls to go live. Follow the Live Control Room prompts for the selected stream. Keep OBS running and monitor the broadcast during the initial test.
Plan for interruptions and replays
A laptop stream depends on the laptop staying online
The encoder runs on the spare laptop, so the stream can stop if the computer sleeps, loses power, loses its internet connection, or OBS closes. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Check the laptop, power, network, and encoder if the broadcast stops; then reconnect OBS and check the Live Control Room before resuming.

For a 24/7 attempt, test the whole setup for an extended period before relying on it. Monitor stream health and dropped-frame indicators, and make sure the operating system is not suspending the computer. A wired connection may help avoid some wireless variability, but it does not eliminate outages.
A long live session may not become a complete YouTube archive
YouTube can automatically archive streams that run for less than 12 hours. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, keep a local recording backup and plan a broadcast schedule that does not depend on YouTube preserving one uninterrupted 24-hour session. YouTube recommends keeping a local backup; an external hard drive can be useful for OBS recordings, with the capacity chosen according to recording settings and how long you want to retain files.

Understand the monetization distinction
Copyright clearance and YouTube Partner Program eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible for monetization. The review applies at channel level. Having permission to use sounds does not guarantee that a channel or stream will qualify for monetization. Original, clearly creator-produced audio and visuals help establish authorship, but do not guarantee approval.
