To stop an OBS nature stream going black between videos, match the source to your files: use Media Source with Loop for one video, or VLC Video with Loop Playlist for several. Then check what the source does when playback ends or it becomes hidden, and test the actual transition in OBS and on YouTube. Looping repeats playback; OBS does not document a guarantee of gapless transitions.
Choose the right OBS source

These controls are distinct: Media Source loops a selected file, while VLC Video loops a playlist. OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes repeating playback, not seamless or frame-perfect transitions.
Set up a single-video loop
- Add a Media Source: In the OBS scene that will carry the broadcast, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop: In the source properties, turn on Loop so the file starts again after playback completes.
- Review end behavior: Check Show nothing when playback ends. OBS describes this option as hiding the source when the file finishes. If no other visible layer supplies video, the scene can appear empty at the endpoint.
- Test the restart: Preview the end and beginning of the file. Confirm the OBS program output stays as intended, then check the YouTube player during a test broadcast.
Set up a playlist loop
- Install VLC: OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add VLC Video: Create a VLC Video source in the scene and add the local nature clips to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist: Turn on Loop Playlist so playback restarts after the source runs out of files.
- Check Visibility Behaviour: Choose behavior appropriate to your scenes. If playback stops while the source is hidden, changing scenes can affect whether it continues playing.
- Test the transitions: Watch the end of one clip, the start of the next, and the last-to-first transition. Check both OBS program output and the remote YouTube player; source properties alone do not establish that a boundary is gapless.
For a several-video loop, playlist order and working file paths matter: confirm every entry plays before leaving the stream unattended.
Find which layer is going black
Compare OBS program output with the YouTube player at the moment the image disappears. That distinction narrows the cause:

- OBS output also goes black: Inspect the source’s Loop or Loop Playlist setting, file paths and playlist entries, end-of-playback behavior, source visibility, and active scene. Look for another layer that may be covering the video or an empty scene exposed when the source ends.
- OBS output remains correct but YouTube goes black or stops: Check OBS’s encoder and stream status, messages in YouTube Live Control Room, upload bandwidth, and connection stability. A healthy local preview does not prove the stream is reaching YouTube correctly.
This is a diagnostic distinction, not a claim that any one setting accounts for every failure. YouTube advises creators to preview and monitor stream health and review messages during a broadcast.
Test delivery separately from video playback
A media source that emits no picture at a file boundary is a local playback problem; more upload bandwidth will not make it loop. If the local picture stays healthy but the remote stream has interruptions or degraded ingest, check the delivery path instead.

- Use upload bandwidth sufficient for the selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate in its streaming tips; this recommendation concerns network capacity, not loop gaps.
- Follow the current YouTube encoder settings for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Recommended bitrate ranges depend on those choices, so there is no universal bitrate that fixes a black screen between clips.
- Test before starting and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while live. YouTube also recommends using RTMPS where supported.
