Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First identify where the picture disappears: OBS preview, an OBS recording, or only the YouTube stream. If the local preview is black, start with the lesson’s source type, selected file, and playback settings. If OBS shows the lesson correctly but YouTube does not, check streaming output and connection separately; a single Media Source setting is not a universal fix.
Find where the black screen appears
Watch the OBS preview while the lesson is playing, then check a local recording if you have one and the YouTube stream separately. These outcomes point to different parts of the setup:
- Black in OBS preview: begin with the scene’s media source and its file and playback settings.
- Preview is visible but the recording is black: check whether the correct scene is being recorded and inspect the recording output separately.
- Preview and recording look right, but YouTube is black or interrupted: investigate stream output and connection rather than treating it as a local media-rendering fault.
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. That is a streaming-connection symptom, not evidence that a local source preview is failing. OBS Help Portal
Check the OBS Media Source settings
Confirm the source and file
- In the scene containing the lesson, select the source and confirm it is an OBS Media Source.
- Open its properties and verify that the intended local video file is selected and available.
- Turn on Loop if the file should restart automatically when playback ends.
- If the lesson should start from its first frame each time the source becomes visible, inspect Restart playback when source becomes active.
OBS Media Source supports local media playback, with supported audio and video formats documented in the OBS Media Sources guide. Looping and restarting on activation are different behaviors: Loop repeats at the end of playback, while restart-on-activation concerns what happens when the source becomes active in the scene.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the problem follows a scene change
Check Close file when inactive. This unloads the media file when its source is hidden or not on the current scene, freeing memory. OBS cautions that reloading it can create a short delay before the source appears again. As a diagnostic comparison, disable the option and test the same scene change. This is worth checking when the symptom tracks hiding or switching scenes, but OBS does not identify it as a universal cause of black screens.
If you use VLC Video for a playlist
VLC Video is a separate OBS source intended for playlists and extended media support. It requires VLC to be installed; OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. In the source properties, check the playlist entries and Loop Playlist, then decide whether playback should continue or restart when the source becomes visible. Use the built-in Media Source for a single supported local file when you do not need VLC’s playlist behavior or extended format support. OBS documents both source types and their controls in its Media Sources guide.

If OBS looks right but YouTube does not
- Confirm the preview is showing the intended scene and lesson while the stream is live.
- Check OBS’s stream status for dropped frames. OBS notes that these can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the chosen bitrate. Lowering bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain it, but first distinguish this from a source that is already black inside OBS.
- If only YouTube is black or the stream is interrupted while OBS remains correct, record the timing and check the OBS log before changing media-source options at random.
OBS’s connection guidance is available in its Help Portal. A dropped-frame warning does not by itself establish why a local preview or recording is black.

- OBS version and operating system
- Whether the fault is in the preview, recording, YouTube stream, or more than one
- Whether it happens at the loop point, after hiding the source, or after changing scenes
- Source type (Media Source or VLC Video), media file format, and relevant source settings
- An OBS log covering a reproduction of the problem
Without those specifics, the available evidence does not establish a current-version bug or a single reliable fix.
A historical report is not a current diagnosis
A user report opened on July 19, 2020 describes OBS Studio 25.0.8 media sources that had not yet been activated failing to appear after extended inactivity with Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive enabled. The reporter said selecting the file again and reloading it restored playback. This documents one historical setup and a workaround reported by that user; it does not establish a current OBS defect, a general time threshold, or a dependable fix for other systems.
