OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists, looping, and shuffle, but OBS’s documentation does not promise a seamless mid-playback edit. Test the exact change on a private stream before relying on it live.
Where to switch the playlist
In an encoder workflow, your encoder sends the outgoing video feed to YouTube using the YouTube server URL and stream key. The playlist is part of the feed produced by that encoder. YouTube’s documented Live Control Room settings cover stream configuration and management, but do not describe a control for replacing the playlist of an already-running broadcast. This applies most directly to OBS and similar encoder-based streams. A webcam or mobile broadcast may have different media controls.
Change a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC to be installed for its VLC Video source to appear. Check the OBS version you have installed if the source is missing.
- Add a VLC Video source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the media files you want to play to its playlist. OBS describes this source as playlist-capable: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Project: Media Sources
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should restart after its final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want OBS to randomize the file order rather than follow the listed order.
- Make the intended source active. The audience receives the feed from OBS, so arrange the scene and source that should be visible in the outgoing program. If you are replacing a playlist during an active broadcast, make the change in the source or media workflow producing that feed.
- Verify the result privately first. OBS’s documentation confirms playlists, loop, and shuffle, but does not specify whether editing the active VLC playlist preserves the current item, restarts it, or creates a transition. Use a private YouTube stream to check the behavior in your installed OBS and VLC versions before making the change on an important broadcast.
What can happen during an active change
The reviewed OBS documentation does not establish what happens to playback continuity when you edit a playlist mid-item. Depending on the particular encoder workflow and version, the current item might continue or restart, and the audience could encounter a black frame, an audio gap, or a scene transition. Check those outcomes in a private stream; do not assume that playlist editing is seamless.

For a lower-risk switch, prepare and verify the replacement playlist or source before the broadcast. If you need to change the content while live, test the exact operation, including whether the new playlist continues in the desired order and loops as intended.
Playlist control is not viewer queue control
A creator’s playlist determines the media in the broadcast feed. A viewer’s YouTube queue is personal to that viewer’s watch session: changing or saving a viewer queue does not alter what the creator is sending to the live stream. YouTube Help: queues
