To stream prerecorded video to YouTube continuously from a cloud server, run an encoder on that server: give it a video file or playlist, connect it to a YouTube stream using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, then monitor the incoming feed and stream health. The cloud machine can keep sending the feed while your own computer is off, but you must plan for network or process failures—and a continuous broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips and eligibility guidance.
- A cloud server you can keep running. It needs access to the video files and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the selected stream. The actual capacity depends on your chosen video settings and the server’s network path; the material here does not establish a particular provider, instance size, operating system, or price.
- An encoder that can read your prerecorded source and send a live feed. YouTube documents encoder-based streaming; Google Cloud’s separate Live Stream API documentation mentions FFmpeg as an example encoder, but does not establish that API as a turnkey direct-to-YouTube looping service.
- Video you have the right to stream. A technical ability to loop a file does not establish permission to use it or eligibility for monetization.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule an encoder stream. Use Live Control Room to create a live stream or schedule one for the intended start time. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow; available labels can change.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Choose RTMPS where your encoder offers it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, in its encoder settings guidance and documents connection details in its RTMPS instructions.
- Protect the key as a credential. Do not publish it, place it in a public script or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream controls and update the encoder configuration.
Configure the encoder for the source
In the encoder, select the prerecorded file or playlist as the input, then set the YouTube stream URL and key as its destination. Enable looping or playlist continuation if the encoder provides those controls. Set video and audio output to match the source as closely as practical, then choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution, frame rate, and codec. Do not treat one bitrate as suitable for every file or server.
Use YouTube’s settings as the target, not a universal preset
YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio. For one specific combination—H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps—YouTube’s current settings table gives 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate and 5 Mbps as the minimum. Those numbers are for that combination, not a blanket recommendation for every source. Consult the full YouTube encoder settings table before selecting output settings.
Match output to what viewers will actually see
- If the source is lower resolution or frame rate, avoid assuming that upscaling or raising the frame rate will improve it; it can increase the network load without adding source detail.
- If you change resolution, frame rate, codec, or audio settings, test the resulting output again. The total bitrate includes audio as well as video.
- Keep the selected output stable during the test and live session. The right setting is the one the server can sustain and that YouTube receives cleanly—not simply the largest available value.
Check the server’s outbound capacity
A cloud server must sustain the encoder’s total outbound bitrate for as long as the stream runs. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For example, if the configured total output is 10 Mbps, plan for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under the conditions in which the server will stream. This is a planning margin, not a guarantee: transient congestion, connection instability, or competing server traffic can still interrupt delivery. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test the actual cloud instance and route with representative video and audio before relying on it for an extended broadcast. A provider’s advertised network capacity alone does not show that the encoder-to-YouTube path will remain healthy for your chosen output.
Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Start the encoder’s output without assuming the stream is already public. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected picture and sound.
- Review stream health before treating the setup as ready. Check for warnings, dropped frames, missing audio, unexpected aspect ratio, or a black or frozen picture. YouTube advises creators to continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality in its live-streaming tips.
- Start or manage the live event in YouTube Studio according to the encoder workflow. Confirm the event is live and that the feed continues to advance. A preview working briefly does not prove that the cloud server can sustain the stream indefinitely.
- Keep an operational check in place. Watch the encoder process, server connectivity, and Live Control Room health. Decide who will respond if the encoder stops, the server restarts, or YouTube loses the connection.
Plan recovery and replay preservation separately
A 24/7 transmission and a complete replay archive are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the entire program matters, do not rely on one uninterrupted YouTube archive: keep a separate recording or other backup under your control, and plan around YouTube’s archive guidance.

For continuity, define what should happen if the encoder process fails, the cloud instance reboots, or the connection drops. Depending on your encoder and server setup, that may mean restarting the process, restoring the playlist position, or reconnecting with the same YouTube stream configuration. Test the recovery procedure rather than assuming that a running cloud instance automatically restarts every component. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream; check the feed and stream health after any restart.
When you intend to stop, end the live event through the YouTube workflow and stop the encoder. Confirm the event has ended in Live Control Room rather than relying only on closing a remote session.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Destination details or connection method | Verify the encoder uses the stream URL and key for the intended Live Control Room stream, and check whether RTMPS is selected where supported. |
| Feed arrives but YouTube reports poor stream health | Bitrate, server egress, or network stability | Compare total output bitrate with sustained available outbound capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check for competing traffic or disruption. |
| Picture is black, frozen, or the wrong shape | Source selection or encoder output | Confirm the intended file or playlist is playing and inspect resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio in the encoder preview and Live Control Room. |
| Audio is absent or does not match the video | Source audio track or encoder audio settings | Check that the source has an audible track and that the encoder outputs an audio format accepted by YouTube, such as AAC or MP3. |
| Stream stops after a server or process failure | Recovery behavior | Check whether the encoder process and playlist resume after a restart; restore them if needed, reconnect, and verify stream health before leaving the session unattended again. |
| The live broadcast exists but the full replay does not | YouTube archive duration | Check the stream’s duration. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; use a separate archive backup if a complete recording matters. |
Rights and monetization still apply
Use video and audio that you own or have permission to broadcast. A stream key, a cloud server, or a playlist does not grant rights to music, gameplay footage, or other material. YouTube’s monetization rules also apply to live streams. Its policy page says the July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and explicitly includes repetitive or mass-produced material; reused content is reviewed separately at channel level. A loop is not automatically disallowed, but looping alone does not make content original, establish permission, or guarantee monetization. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies and assess your own content against them.

A general-purpose cloud server with an encoder gives you control over the file input and output configuration, but you are responsible for setup, sustained egress, monitoring, and recovery. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview describes a different managed product for transcoding live linear streams, with documented HLS/DASH outputs; that documentation does not establish it as a direct-to-YouTube loop service. Choose an approach based on whether you want to operate an encoder yourself or use a service built to run uploaded videos as a YouTube live stream.
