OBS vs FFmpeg for a YouTube Live Loop on a Low-Power PC

OBS offers a graphical setup and hardware-encoder options; FFmpeg may suit command-line automation. Neither can be declared universally lighter, so test your exact loop, PC, and connection.

Short answer: there is no proven universal winner for low CPU use. Try OBS first if you want a visible, graphical setup; its Auto-Configuration Wizard and hardware-encoder options make it easier to tune and monitor a stream. FFmpeg may suit a fixed command-line workflow, but the available evidence does not establish that it uses less CPU or provide a verified looping-and-recovery command. Whichever you choose, test your exact PC, video, audio, and connection before relying on a 24/7 broadcast.

Which should you choose?

What matters OBS FFmpeg
Setup and visibility Graphical workflow; OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Command-line workflow; better suited to users who want to automate a fixed setup. Specific loop flags are not established here.
Hardware encoding OBS generally recommends a supported hardware encoder to move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Availability and quality depend on the GPU and encoder generation. Whether an appropriate hardware encoder is available and configured depends on the system and workflow; no comparative performance result is established.
CPU use Depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. No independently measured comparison establishes lower CPU use than OBS.
Preview and monitoring Provides a graphical preview and controls for checking the live setup. Monitoring depends on the command and surrounding workflow; no equivalent loop-specific comparison is established.
Restart and recovery Test behavior for the exact source and failure cases you expect. Test behavior for the exact command and failure cases you expect; no verified reconnect or recovery flags are provided here.

For a low-power PC, start with OBS if you want to see and adjust the setup directly. First check whether OBS offers a supported hardware encoder such as NVENC, QSV, or AMF. If you already have a command-line workflow, FFmpeg can be a reasonable candidate, but decide by testing rather than assuming it is lighter. OBS’s published minimum requirements are compatibility guidance, not a guarantee that a given computer can encode your chosen stream reliably: OBS System Requirements.

Set a YouTube stream target before tuning the PC

Choose an output your machine and internet connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, its published figures are:

Output YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s platform settings, not measured results or guarantees that your PC or connection can maintain the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table and other output combinations. If the PC struggles, lower the resolution or frame rate and test again rather than starting with a demanding target.

Configure and test an OBS loop

  1. Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its suggested settings as a starting point, not proof that a long stream will remain stable.
  2. Check the encoder choices. In OBS’s output settings, see whether a supported hardware encoder is available. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because it shifts work away from the CPU; the right choice depends on GPU compatibility and encoder generation. For details, see OBS Hardware Encoding.
  3. Add your video as a source and set the output. Configure resolution and frame rate conservatively. Avoid unnecessary scene complexity on a low-power machine. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, following YouTube’s current guidance for your selected codec and resolution.
  4. Set up the YouTube destination securely. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the RTMPS URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and encoder setup instructions.
  5. Preview and test with the real material. Test representative motion and audio, check the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room, and confirm the broadcast looks and sounds right before depending on it. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom; for example, a stream configured at 8 Mbps needs more than 8 Mbps available upload capacity to leave that margin.
  6. Test the loop and interruptions. Confirm that the video repeats as intended and that the stream behaves acceptably if the network or encoder stops. A 24/7 requirement makes restart behavior important; do not assume a particular application will recover automatically without testing your exact setup.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive rule, not a guarantee that a longer broadcast will be uninterrupted. Check the current encoder setup guidance before planning a long-running stream.

When FFmpeg is the better fit

Consider FFmpeg when you are comfortable managing a command-line process and want the setup integrated into an existing automation workflow. The deciding questions are whether your chosen build and system expose an encoder you can use, whether the PC has enough headroom at your target settings, and how you will detect and recover from a failed process or connection.

No verified FFmpeg loop command, reconnect options, or OBS-versus-FFmpeg CPU measurements are established here. Because the correct command depends on the source file, operating system, build, encoder, and desired behavior at loop boundaries, it would be misleading to present a generic command as a tested 24/7 solution. Validate the exact command and recovery behavior on your own setup before leaving it unattended.

Diagnose common low-power streaming problems

  • Encoding overload or skipped frames: reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or test a supported hardware encoder. Change one setting at a time and monitor stream health.
  • Unstable connection or dropped frames: check available upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test at the intended bitrate using the real connection.
  • Stream will not connect: verify that you copied the current RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room and entered them correctly. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • Audio or motion is wrong: test representative sections of the actual video, not just a static screen, and inspect the YouTube preview before relying on the broadcast.
  • The stream stops and does not resume: test what happens after a process exit and a network interruption. Configure and verify your own restart approach rather than assuming loop playback also means automatic recovery.
  • Broadcast is interrupted over content rights: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may show a placeholder image, trigger a warning, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Confirm you have rights to the looped video and audio; repeating or personally owning a recording does not by itself establish that all included material is cleared. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos without leaving a low-power PC on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the upload rather than broadcasting from a camera. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OBS minimum system compatibility mean my PC can stream 720p reliably?

No. Compatibility requirements do not predict performance for your encoder, frame rate, scene, and connection. Test the intended setup and monitor stream health.

Can I use a video with copyrighted music as a 24/7 loop?

A live stream is still subject to YouTube’s third-party content scans. Secure the necessary rights for every included element.
