To run different music moods at the same time, create a separate YouTube live feed and broadcast for each mood, such as ambient and upbeat. Each feed needs its own stream configuration and distinct programming. A single feed can be linked to multiple YouTube broadcasts, but that shares the same content; it does not create independent radio stations.
Choose the right setup for each mood
YouTube distinguishes the incoming feed, represented in its Live Streaming API as a liveStream, from the broadcast viewers watch, represented as a liveBroadcast. You can bind multiple broadcasts to one stream when you want the same feed to appear in multiple videos. For separate simultaneous programming, use distinct stream resources and broadcasts. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation and its broadcast documentation.
| What you want | Setup |
|---|---|
| Different moods playing concurrently | Independent feed and broadcast for each mood, with its own content and encoder configuration. |
| The same feed shown in more than one video | One stream can be bound to multiple broadcasts; the content remains the same. |
| Only one mood live at a time | Decide whether to reuse a station setup or prepare separate feeds. YouTube’s cited documentation establishes the feed/broadcast distinction, not a required 24/7 automation product or restart method. |
Set up separate mood streams
- Plan the stations. List the moods that need to be live simultaneously, the music and visuals each will carry, and whether each needs an independent broadcast identity. If programming differs, plan a separate feed and broadcast for each mood.
- Prepare one continuous audio-video feed per station. Use an encoder configured for that station’s feed and send it to YouTube. YouTube defines the stream resource as the feed sent to the service, but the official material cited here does not require a particular encoder, operating system, computer, or 24/7 restart script. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance covers encoder setup.
- Configure and test each feed independently. Check that the correct music and visuals appear in the intended broadcast, and that each mood has its own encoder configuration when it carries distinct programming. Test the feeds and rights arrangements before relying on them as continuous stations.
- If you use HLS ingestion, follow HLS-specific requirements. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. These constraints apply to HLS; do not assume they apply to other ingestion protocols. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output.
Clear music and visual rights before going live
Confirm that your permissions cover the actual tracks and visuals, the territories where they will be used, live playback, and any archive or replay use. A license should not be treated as a guarantee that YouTube’s automated systems will let a stream continue uninterrupted.
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party material, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. Read YouTube Help on live-stream copyright.

YouTube’s live Content ID matching is a specialized feature, not a general-purpose music clearance option. Its documentation describes access at Content Manager level for certain partners and requires global rights and exclusive ownership of the matched live content; third-party material such as background music is not permitted in a stream using the feature. Ordinary creators should not assume they can use it to clear music. See YouTube’s live Content ID matching guidance.

Troubleshoot the setup
- Two broadcasts show the same mood. They may be bound to the same stream. For distinct simultaneous programming, use separate stream resources and send the intended content to each.
- A feed is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder. YouTube may have detected third-party content. Check the rights for the tracks and visuals, and if you have a license, ask the rights holder about allowlisting your channel through Content ID.
- A claim appears after a stream ends. YouTube says archived streams may receive Content ID claims after completion. Review the claim against the rights you hold for the recording and archive use.
- HLS ingestion does not work as expected. Verify that you are using TS segments within YouTube’s stated 1–4 second range, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. These settings are HLS-specific.
- You expect a standard creator account to enable live Content ID matching. The documented feature is restricted to certain partners and has demanding rights conditions; use appropriate licensing and clearance instead.
