Best if you want a Mac-based setup: OBS is the local encoder to evaluate. It sends a video feed from your Mac to YouTube, but the Mac, media files, power and internet connection must stay available for the broadcast. A YouTube playlist is not itself a live broadcast. YouTube’s playlist loop repeats playback for an individual viewer; an encoder or cloud service must create and send the live feed. YouTube supports software encoders, including OBS, as a way to send a live feed. The local workflow is only as continuous as the Mac, source media, network connection and power. Set up the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream key and server URL from the stream setup. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the exact controls shown in your account: YouTube encoder setup.
- In OBS, configure the YouTube destination using the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that broadcast.
- Add the prerecorded content as a source that OBS can access locally. Confirm the media plays in the OBS preview before starting the stream. Verify supported file formats, playlist behavior, and compatibility with your macOS version using current OBS documentation and your own test; the available general OBS help portal does not confirm a particular VLC playlist setup: OBS Help.
- Start streaming in OBS and check YouTube Studio to confirm the incoming feed is received and the broadcast is live. Monitor playback and the Mac’s network and power availability rather than assuming a local stream will continue unattended indefinitely.
Playlist, loop and rights checks
- Test the entire intended playlist, including what happens at the end of the final item and whether playback returns to the beginning. Do not assume that a YouTube playlist loop controls what OBS transmits.
- Check how you will change or replace media during a broadcast; playlist updates and supported formats depend on the source workflow you choose.
- Confirm you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast every video and audio track. A live broadcast can be interrupted or restricted if its content is not authorized; this article does not provide legal advice.
Choose an ingest protocol with YouTube’s latency trade-off in mind
YouTube documents RTMP setup for encoder streaming and also offers HLS ingestion. HLS is not a playlist manager: it is a way for an encoder to deliver the stream. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires specific segment and rolling-playlist settings. Use its technical instructions rather than guessing at those values: YouTube HLS ingestion requirements.
Plan for long-running broadcasts and replays
A continuous 24/7 broadcast is longer than YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not assume the entire 24/7 transmission will be saved as one replay under that rule; plan separately for any recordings or shorter broadcast sessions you need to preserve. Troubleshoot the common failure points
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that the stream key and server URL in the encoder match the active YouTube broadcast setup. Re-copy the key if necessary and keep it private.
- The stream starts but the playlist stops: Check whether the media source has reached the end, whether looping is configured in the playback method, and whether the next file is available to the encoder.
- A playlist URL does not play as expected: A YouTube playlist loop is viewer playback behavior, not proof that OBS can ingest and transmit that playlist. Use content the encoder can access and verify the workflow with a test stream.
- The local broadcast goes offline: Check Mac sleep or shutdown, power, network availability, OBS state and access to the media files. A local encoder cannot send continuously when its computer or connection is unavailable.
- HLS has more delay than expected: Higher latency than RTMP is a documented HLS trade-off. Confirm the selected protocol and follow YouTube’s required HLS segment and rolling-playlist configuration.
- The replay is incomplete or missing: A stream lasting 24 hours exceeds YouTube’s documented under-12-hour automatic-archive rule. Do not rely on that rule to preserve the full continuous broadcast.
