To show the current track on a 24/7 YouTube radio stream, get its title and artist from playback metadata—or a maintained track list—and render that information into the video sent to YouTube. In OBS, you can use a browser overlay or update native text and image sources. If your hosted playout service has a Now Playing element, it may handle the overlay for you. YouTube’s live-event title is separate: changing it does not create an on-screen song label.
Choose an overlay that matches your playback source
The right method depends on where the music plays and whether the track list changes dynamically. An overlay can only display accurate information if its source can provide that information.

For a fixed sequence, a maintained track list, chapters, or video description data can supply labels. For dynamically selected playback, use an integration that reads the actual player’s current state. A manually maintained list can drift from the audio if playback order changes.
Add the track information to the outgoing video
- Identify the player. Decide whether playback comes from YouTube Music desktop, a browser, or hosted playout. Confirm that the player exposes the current title and artist, or that you can maintain a reliable list for the sequence.
- Choose the matching data source. For YouTube Music desktop, YTMDesktop2 documents enabling its local API and copying an overlay URL from its OBS settings. A community bridge instead supplies local text and image files. For browser playback, check that the extension’s chapter or description-based source matches your playlist setup.
- Add it to the scene. In OBS, add the YTMDesktop2 overlay URL as a Browser Source, or add text and image sources that read the bridge’s files. Place the label where it will not obscure important video content.
- Preview actual track changes. Check that the displayed title and artist change with the audio. Test pause, stop, app restart, missing metadata, and track transitions before relying on the scene unattended.
- Set a stale-data fallback. Decide what viewers should see if metadata stops updating: hide the label or display a clear message such as “Now playing unavailable.” The community bridge documentation says it clears text when playback stops but can retain the last track if YouTube Music fully closes.
- Check the layout with long titles. Preview long track names and artists at the stream’s normal size. Hosted overlay documentation warns that long titles can break layouts and recommends handling overflow.
Keep the overlay distinct from YouTube’s live-event details
A changing song label needs to be part of the composed video or supplied by the playout system. YouTube’s Live Broadcast API documents broadcast-level details such as actual and scheduled start and end times and viewer count; those fields are not documented as an automatic per-track graphic. Do not treat Spotify’s current-track API as streaming permission
Spotify’s current-track endpoint can expose the user’s playing item, but Spotify’s documentation says its content must not be synchronized with visual media and may not be used for non-interactive broadcasting. Do not interpret access to track metadata as permission to pair Spotify recordings with a continuous YouTube radio stream. Spotify current-track endpoint
Compare the practical trade-offs
- Source compatibility: make sure the overlay reads the player that actually supplies the audio.
- Dynamic data or fixed list: a live player integration can follow changing selections; chapters and descriptions require accurate track data to be maintained.
- Failure behavior: check what happens on pause, stop, missing metadata, and app or process failure, including whether an old title remains on screen.
- Appearance: consider layout, album art, contrast, screen placement, and long-title overflow.
- Unattended operation: consider which local apps and integrations must remain running, and how they recover from interruptions.
- Cost and dependency: check any hosted service’s pricing and terms. The available documentation describes feature differences, but does not establish an independent reliability or cost comparison.
