Stream copy does not re-encode, repair timestamps, change keyframe spacing, or make an incompatible stream compatible. Test the exact file and loop boundary before relying on it live.
What “copy codec” means in FFmpeg
-c copy tells FFmpeg not to re-encode the selected output streams. It preserves their encoded properties, so it avoids encoding work but cannot convert codecs, change resolution or frame rate, adjust bitrate, or create a new keyframe pattern. Those changes require encoding the affected stream.
Looping and pacing are separate from compatibility. -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat an input indefinitely; -re reads a file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1) so it is paced more like a live source. Neither option alters the encoded video or audio.
When stream copy can work for YouTube Live
Copy is a reasonable candidate when all of these conditions hold:

- The video and audio codecs are accepted by the selected output container and YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
- The source’s timing and keyframe spacing are suitable for live ingest.
- The file repeats acceptably at its end-to-start boundary for the duration you intend to stream.
- The stream is sent using the correct YouTube ingest address and stream key for the selected protocol.
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3; 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced settings recommend stereo, 44.1 kHz audio at 128 kbps. These are ingest settings to compare against the actual streams, not properties that -c copy will impose.
Bitrate guidance depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, 1080p60 at 6/17 Mbps, and 720p30 at 3/8 Mbps. Do not apply one row to a different resolution, frame rate, or codec. A copied file retains its own encoded bitrate and rate-control characteristics.

Inspect the file before choosing copy
- Check the streams. Run
ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format input.mp4. Note each stream’s codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio format, sample rate, channel layout, and timing information. For keyframe spacing, inspect frame data withffprobe -select_streams v:0 -show_frames -show_entries frame=key_frame,best_effort_timestamp_time -of csv input.mp4and compare the timestamps of keyframes. - Compare with YouTube’s current settings. Confirm the codecs and stream properties against YouTube’s live encoder guidance and the output format you intend to use. A codec that is acceptable in principle still needs a compatible container and usable timing.
- Check the audio as carefully as the video. A video stream that fits does not guarantee the audio stream does. If the audio codec or layout is unsuitable, copy the video and encode only audio if that solves the incompatibility; otherwise encode the affected streams.
- Test the exact loop. Check the transition from the last frames and samples of the file back to the first. The reviewed official documentation does not guarantee seamless looping for arbitrary MP4 or MKV inputs with stream copy. File-specific timestamp or discontinuity behavior can also matter.
Example loop command—and its limits
For a file whose streams have already passed those checks, this is a starting template for sending a repeated input to a YouTube RTMPS destination:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_AND_KEY"

Replace input.mp4 with your file and set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_AND_KEY to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key YouTube provides for your broadcast. Keep the stream key private. The optional audio mapping (0:a:0?) allows the command to proceed if the input has no audio stream; it does not create audio or fix an unsuitable audio stream. If your file has multiple tracks or you need a particular one, inspect the streams and map the intended track instead.
-re and -stream_loop are input options and appear before -i. The output mapping, codec choice, and format follow the input. This is not a universal “make any video work” command: -c copy leaves the source encoding untouched, and FFmpeg’s documented GIF looping behavior is not a general guarantee for MP4 or MKV loop boundaries.

When copying fails, and what to change
A failed or unhealthy stream does not by itself identify the cause. Check the source and YouTube’s stream-health feedback rather than assuming every failure at the loop point has the same explanation.
| Symptom or mismatch | Why copy may not work | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube rejects or cannot decode a stream | The codec, container, or stream combination may not suit the chosen ingest path. | Verify the actual video and audio codecs and output format. Encode only the incompatible stream if the other stream is already suitable. |
| Keyframes are too far apart | Copy preserves the source keyframe pattern; it cannot create keyframes at a new interval. | Re-encode video with an appropriate keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Bitrate or rate control does not fit the target | Copy does not change the source’s bitrate or rate-control behavior. | Compare the file with the YouTube guidance for its codec, resolution, and frame rate. Re-encode if the source needs different rate control or bitrate. |
| Audio is missing, unsupported, or configured unexpectedly | The video and audio tracks have separate compatibility requirements. | Inspect audio codec, channel layout, and sample rate; map the intended track or encode audio to a suitable format. |
| The stream stalls or behaves unexpectedly near a repeat | Input pacing, timing, and file-specific loop-boundary behavior can affect the result; official guidance does not certify every file/container combination. | Test the precise file and duration, inspect FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health, and try a re-encoded output if the copied stream remains unreliable. |
| The local process stops after disconnecting or shutting down | A local FFmpeg job depends on the computer, process, and network connection that are running it. | Keep the process and connection available, or use a cloud service designed to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running. |
Test before depending on the stream
- Start with the intended file, selected audio track, resolution, and frame rate—not a short or silent stand-in.
- Send it to the YouTube ingest destination shown for your broadcast, using RTMPS for RTMP-based delivery where available.
- Include motion and representative audio in the test. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health/status feedback, then let the file cross its loop boundary. Confirm both the incoming stream and the repeated transition behave acceptably.
- If it fails, use the error or health feedback to narrow down protocol, codec, timing, bitrate, keyframe, and audio issues before changing settings.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingest addresses. A backup address is an alternate destination; its existence does not mean a running FFmpeg process will automatically reconnect or resume if the connection drops.
