How to Calculate Bandwidth for Streaming Prerecorded Videos to YouTube 24/7

Calculate upload capacity from your YouTube live bitrate, leave 20% headroom, and estimate how much data a prerecorded stream uses around the clock.

To stream prerecorded video to YouTube continuously, calculate bandwidth from the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate—not from your audience size. Divide that bitrate by 0.8 to leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. For example, a 10 Mbps feed calls for about 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. At a constant 10 Mbps, expect roughly 108 decimal GB of data per day, before overhead and retransmissions.

What bandwidth a nonstop YouTube stream needs

Your streaming computer or service sends one live feed to YouTube. YouTube then transcodes that feed into multiple output formats for viewers, so your upload requirement does not multiply with the number of viewers. The source being prerecorded does not change this: while the live stream is running, the encoder must keep sending its feed.

Use the configured total stream bitrate, including audio, to estimate upload capacity. If your encoder’s stated bitrate already includes audio, do not add audio a second time. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total bitrate; its guidance says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends that headroom (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).

Choose the live ingest bitrate for your format

Find the row for your resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec in YouTube’s live encoder settings. The table below gives YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest rates and the upload targets calculated by dividing those rates by 0.8. The target column is a planning calculation, not a separate YouTube recommendation.

Live format (H.264) YouTube recommended ingest bitrate Available upload target with 20% headroom
720p30 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 17.5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 21.25 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps 26.25 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 42.5 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 42 Mbps 52.5 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 50 Mbps 62.5 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed H.264 live ingest recommendations; YouTube also lists values for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Use the matching codec row if your encoder is configured for either of those codecs. Do not substitute YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading a video file: live ingest and file upload settings are different (live encoder settings; video upload encoding settings).

Calculate the required upload capacity

  1. Choose resolution and frame rate. For example, select 1080p30 rather than estimating from resolution alone.
  2. Look up the encoder codec and format. Use the corresponding row in YouTube’s live ingest guidance.
  3. Set the feed bitrate. Start with YouTube’s recommended ingest rate unless you have a well-tested reason to use a different setting.
  4. Reserve headroom. Calculate available upload capacity as total stream bitrate ÷ 0.8. YouTube’s network advice refers to total bitrate and mentions primary and backup feeds, so add the bitrates of simultaneous feeds before dividing by 0.8.
  5. Measure upload on the actual connection. Test the connection the encoder will use, then check again during ordinary household or office network activity. Download speed is not a substitute for upload speed.

Example: 1080p30 H.264

YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for this format. The estimate is 14 ÷ 0.8 = 17.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. If other devices or encoders share the connection, their traffic reduces what is available to the stream; allow for that use in your plan.

Several simultaneous feeds

Add the outgoing bitrates first, then apply the headroom calculation. For example, two feeds at 10 Mbps each total 20 Mbps, so the planning target is 20 ÷ 0.8 = 25 Mbps available upload capacity. This is capacity for the feeds, not a guaranteed internet-plan speed.

Estimate data use for 24/7 streaming

For a constant encoded rate of R Mbps, estimate decimal data transfer as:

  • Per day: R × 10.8 decimal GB.
  • Per 30-day month: R × 324 decimal GB.

These figures follow from a constant bitrate running uninterrupted; actual transfer can differ because of protocol overhead, retransmissions, and bitrate behavior. They are useful for estimating metered-connection use, not as an exact internet-provider billing figure.

Constant feed bitrate Approximate data per 24 hours Approximate data per 30 days
8 Mbps 86.4 decimal GB 2,592 decimal GB (2.592 TB)
10 Mbps 108 decimal GB 3,240 decimal GB (3.24 TB)
14 Mbps 151.2 decimal GB 4,536 decimal GB (4.536 TB)
50 Mbps 540 decimal GB 16,200 decimal GB (16.2 TB)

Use the bitrate actually sent by your encoder for this calculation. Upload headroom is spare capacity on your connection; it is not extra encoded data unless the feed itself sends at a higher rate.

Encoder settings that affect the calculation

YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS live settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. For those settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Its recommended audio bitrate is 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Account for the configured total output rate when estimating upload and data use (YouTube live encoder settings).

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live ingestion. A stream key identifies the feed YouTube should accept and functions like a password: keep it private. You can find setup guidance in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Check whether your connection can sustain the stream

A speed test is a snapshot, not proof that a connection will remain stable around the clock. YouTube notes that available upload bandwidth matters and that other activity on the network can compete with the stream. Test at the location and on the connection your encoder will use, ideally while other devices are behaving normally. If the available upload repeatedly falls below your calculated target, reduce the stream bitrate or resolution, limit competing traffic, or consider a broadband plan with more upload capacity.

A wired Ethernet connection may help avoid some wireless variability if the streaming computer can connect to the router, but a cable does not increase the upload speed supplied by your internet plan. YouTube’s guidance calls for sufficient, reliable upload bandwidth; it does not require Ethernet or specify a particular cable category.

Common bandwidth calculation mistakes

  • Checking download instead of upload: the encoder sends data outward to YouTube. YouTube notes that inbound/download bandwidth is often greater than outbound/upload bandwidth.
  • Using video-file upload settings: choose live ingest guidance for an encoder feed, not YouTube’s separate video upload table.
  • Assuming a speed test guarantees continuous service: test under normal network load and monitor the actual stream; a brief result cannot establish nonstop stability.
  • Multiplying bitrate by viewer count: your encoder sends a feed to YouTube, which transcodes it for viewers.
  • Treating headroom as extra stream bitrate: the 20% is capacity reserved above the configured total bitrate, not a command to increase the encoded feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want your own computer and internet connection to carry a nonstop feed, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud to YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream plays your videos, not a camera feed.
