Start by checking which OBS counter is rising. Dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain—not to the playlist itself. Fix the network path and bitrate first; if OBS instead reports rendering lag or encoding overload, troubleshoot computer performance separately.
1. Identify which OBS problem you have
Watch the OBS status indicators while streaming. OBS treats network dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding overload as different symptoms. Its connection guide says dropped frames indicate a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server, or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself is the cause. This is diagnostic guidance, not a guarantee about every setup. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the network branch, while its encoding performance guide covers rendering and encoding pressure.
- Dropped frames: investigate upload stability, bitrate, route, and ingest server.
- Rendering lag or encoding overload: investigate GPU load, scene complexity, output resolution, and frame rate.
2. Check the playlist source without assuming it caused the drops
OBS supports playlist playback through its VLC Video Source. Install VLC for the source to appear; if OBS is 64-bit, OBS’s documentation says VLC must also be 64-bit. The standard Media Source is for an individual supported media file. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene that should play the videos.
- Load the intended files into its playlist and check whether Loop and Shuffle match the planned playback.
- Check source visibility and scene transitions so the playlist remains visible when expected.
- Test playback locally, then test an unlisted or private YouTube stream before relying on the playlist unattended.
OBS documents playlist functionality, but does not identify playlist playback as a cause of network dropped frames. Keep the source check separate from connection diagnosis.

3. Stabilize the connection and choose a sustainable bitrate
Test the connection while the stream is running, not just with a brief speed test. A bitrate that appears feasible in a momentary test may not be sustainable when upload capacity fluctuates or other devices use the connection.
Try the lowest-cost connection checks first
- If you are on Wi-Fi and your computer and router support it, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired connectivity because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable will not solve an ISP outage, a congested route, an overloaded encoder, or an ingest-side problem.
- Pause other uploads and check whether another device or application is consuming upstream bandwidth.
- Check for an unstable VPN, security software interference, network utilities that deprioritize OBS, and outdated network drivers. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples of network-prioritization utilities. Test suspected software and adjust its settings or add an OBS exception if confirmed; do not leave security software disabled.
Reduce bitrate or change ingest server
OBS recommends trying another streaming server and lowering the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and the service’s limits. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guaranteed safe setting. Leave headroom for normal variation and other network use, then test for sustained stability. A different ingest server is a diagnostic test; switching servers alone does not repair a poor connection.

OBS also lists Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report helpful. Leave Bind to IP at Default. Testing IPv4-only is an option; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can adjust bitrate downward when the connection cannot keep up. This may reduce drops during congestion, but it lowers output quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. Treat it as a way to preserve continuity while diagnosing the cause, not as a substitute for a stable connection.

4. Match OBS output to YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s recommendations vary by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following H.264 figures are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026; they are not a promise that your upload connection can sustain the selected rate.
| Output | Codec | YouTube bitrate range |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps minimum; 12 Mbps recommended |
Use the current YouTube encoder settings page to verify the recommendation for your actual codec and output before going live. For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS.

If your stream uses HLS ingestion, follow YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements rather than carrying RTMP settings over by assumption. YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Switching protocols is not, by itself, a remedy for dropped frames. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and the current encoder page for applicable setup details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload
This is the branch for a computer that cannot render the scene or encode frames on time, rather than a clearly rising network dropped-frames counter. OBS needs GPU resources for scene compositing and rendering. Its performance troubleshooting guide recommends freeing GPU capacity, reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes, limiting expensive sources, and reducing filters.

6. Test before going live and monitor stream health
- Make a short test stream using the same OBS scene, playlist, encoder, bitrate, and network you plan to use.
- Check OBS’s separate dropped-frame, rendering-lag, and encoding-overload indicators during the test.
- Review YouTube’s stream health and adjust the network or encoder setting indicated by the actual symptom.
- Test the playlist’s loop, shuffle, visibility, and transition behavior through a full cycle if the stream will run unattended.
- Monitor stream health during the live event; YouTube advises testing in advance and checking health while streaming.
7. Troubleshoot common dropped-frame cases
| Symptom | Likely branch | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames rise while rendering and encoding indicators remain normal | Connection to ingest server or bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity | Lower bitrate, test another ingest server, check competing upload use and VPN/network utilities, and test wired Ethernet if currently on Wi-Fi. |
| Drops appear during upload-heavy activity at home | Variable or shared upstream bandwidth | Pause other uploads, leave more upload headroom, and test a lower bitrate over a sustained period. |
| OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload | GPU, scene, resolution, or frame-rate pressure | Simplify the scene, reduce filters and sources, lower resolution, or test 30 fps. |
| VLC Video Source is missing | VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS | Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, as specified by OBS documentation. |
| Drops persist after enabling dynamic bitrate | Dynamic bitrate is masking congestion rather than fixing it | Check connection stability and ingest server, then select a bitrate the connection can sustain. |
| HLS configuration behaves differently from an RTMP setup | Protocol-specific requirements or segment latency | Check YouTube’s HLS guidance for segment format, duration, and playlist requirements; HLS has higher latency than RTMP. |
