Find where the audio and video first diverge before changing a delay setting. Compare the same visible action and sharp sound in the source, encoder output, YouTube live preview, and viewer playback. If the offset is present in the source, fix the media; if it appears later, use connection and stream-health evidence to locate the problem. A stream that is simply late or buffering is not necessarily out of sync.
First identify what is out of sync
Audio/video sync means the sound and its corresponding action do not line up. Latency means the whole stream reaches a viewer later than it happens at the source. Buffering interrupts playback; a delayed replay may also appear behind the live event. These are different symptoms and do not call for the same fix.
Use a repeatable cue at each point
- Choose a cue: use a visible action paired with a sharp sound, such as a hand clap, in a representative recording.
- Check the source: play the uploaded file locally. If the cue is already out of sync, correct or replace the media before troubleshooting the stream.
- Compare monitoring points: check the encoder output or local preview, YouTube’s live preview, then viewer playback where available. Note the first point where the cue is wrong.
- Record direction and change: note whether sound leads or trails the action, and whether the gap stays constant or grows over time. Do not apply an audio delay until you know where the mismatch begins.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming).
Check the connection before changing sync settings
If the workflow uses OBS, watch its dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while the stream runs. OBS says an increasing dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection status indicate that the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS: Dropped Frames and Network Issues).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When those indicators support a connection problem, reduce output bitrate or improve the upload path, then test again. Lowering bitrate is not a general audio/video sync fix. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can delay a live stream even if the connection sustains its average bitrate. Its guidance also cautions that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer for the player (YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency).
Verify encoder settings and YouTube health warnings
Compare the settings for the actual protocol and resolution in use with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance specifies AAC or MP3 audio, with a recommended sample rate of 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio (YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming).

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Read the specific stream-health message rather than changing several settings at once. YouTube diagnostics identify problems including unsupported audio codecs, incorrect sample rates, multiple audio streams, mismatched primary and backup stream settings, and video ingestion starvation (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live streaming issues).
If you have a backup stream
When YouTube reports a primary/backup mismatch, compare the settings it identifies: audio codec, bitrate, sample rate and channel count, as well as video codec, frame rate, resolution and bitrate. Make a targeted correction, then test with the same cue again.

Check HLS only if your stream actually uses it
“Cloud playlist” can mean different setups; a playlist does not by itself establish that the stream uses HLS. Apply these requirements only if HLS is the ingestion protocol. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations from one to four seconds. Shorter segments reduce latency. Consult YouTube’s supported codecs and audio settings for the HLS configuration you use (YouTube Help: HLS ingestion).
HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. That delivery delay is not, on its own, evidence of an audio/video mismatch. A playlist can arrive later and still remain synchronized.

Choose latency for the interaction, not as a sync repair
YouTube describes Normal latency for non-interactive streams, Low latency for limited interaction, and Ultra-low latency for real-time engagement. Its guidance says Low latency is less than 10 seconds for most viewers and Ultra-low latency is less than five seconds for most viewers; these figures describe viewer latency, not an acceptable audio/video offset. Ultra-low latency has a higher chance of buffering, and HLS disables that option (YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency; YouTube Help: HLS ingestion).
Changing latency may alter delivery delay and buffering behavior, but it does not identify or correct a track-sync fault. Keep the latency choice aligned with how much real-time interaction the stream needs, and diagnose audio/video timing separately.

Common symptoms and what to check
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The local recording is already out of sync | Correct or replace the source recording; the fault exists before streaming. |
| The source is synchronized, but the encoder output is not | Check the encoder’s audio/video configuration and any processing or playback settings. Change one relevant setting at a time and repeat the cue test. |
| The mismatch first appears in YouTube’s live preview | Inspect YouTube stream-health warnings and verify protocol-specific encoder settings. |
| OBS shows rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator | Treat the connection as unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate; address the upload path or bitrate, then retest. |
| The stream is behind the event, but sound still matches the picture | Investigate latency, buffering or HLS segment delivery rather than applying an audio offset. |
| The gap grows during playback | Recheck the source over time, connection health and encoder/ingestion diagnostics. A fixed delay may not correct a mismatch that changes. |
