You can run OBS for a continuous YouTube stream from a low-spec laptop, but no single setting guarantees that the machine will stay live around the clock. The practical approach is to start with a modest output, use a supported hardware encoder if available, verify upload capacity, and test the actual scene and stream before relying on it. OBS needs the laptop powered, cool, connected and monitored; if you are looping uploaded videos rather than producing a live camera, screen or audio feed, a cloud service is a different option.
Can a low-spec laptop stream on YouTube 24/7 with OBS?
Possibly. The answer depends on the laptop’s encoder, sustained cooling and performance, the complexity of your OBS scene, the resolution and frame rate, and the stability of your upload connection. OBS’s published system requirements are a compatibility baseline, not proof that a particular computer can stream reliably. OBS explicitly cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” OBS system requirements (dated August 25, 2021) also note that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity.
Use OBS when the stream is genuinely being produced on the laptop—for example, a camera, gameplay, screen capture or live audio mixed into an OBS scene. If the goal is simply to play uploaded recordings in a continuous loop, that is a different workflow: YouTube’s encoder setup page identifies cloud services for prerecorded 24/7 video, which do not require a local OBS session. Check the laptop and choose a realistic starting point
Run OBS’s setup wizard, then test your real scene
- Install a current OBS Studio release compatible with your operating system, then open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the recommended starting configuration as a baseline, not a promise of stable 24/7 operation.
- Note the laptop model, OS, CPU, integrated or discrete GPU, and which hardware encoders OBS makes available. The exact encoder support depends on the GPU, drivers and OS; without those details, no specific encoder can be prescribed.
- Build the scene you actually intend to stream, including its sources, overlays and audio. A simple still-image scene is not a useful performance test if your real stream includes gameplay, moving video or several capture sources.
- Run a private or unlisted test and watch OBS’s rendering and encoding status while checking YouTube’s preview and stream health. If performance degrades, change one setting at a time so you can identify whether resolution, frame rate, scene load or encoding is the constraint.
Prefer a supported hardware encoder when it works well
OBS generally recommends a supported hardware encoder because it shifts encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. OBS’s hardware encoding guidance (dated January 11, 2022) notes that older-generation hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than x264 at comparable bitrates. So test the picture as well as CPU load; hardware encoding is not a guarantee of better quality on every laptop.

Set OBS output for a limited laptop
Start at a modest resolution and frame rate
For a laptop with little performance headroom, try 480p30 or 720p30 before attempting 1080p60. A 30 fps starting point is a sensible way to reduce work compared with a higher-frame-rate output, but it does not guarantee reliability for a particular machine.
If the laptop struggles to render or encode, OBS’s encoding troubleshooting recommends lowering Base (Canvas) Resolution. Also simplify the scene—remove unneeded capture sources, filters and animated elements—and retest. Lowering the canvas can help, but it does not necessarily fix every encoding, rendering or thermal bottleneck.

Use YouTube’s H.264 RTMP/RTMPS recommendations
YouTube’s published H.264 ingestion guidance lists these bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not evidence that a laptop can sustain the corresponding setting.

In OBS, configure the stream for H.264 video and CBR bitrate control, then set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use RTMPS as the connection protocol where available; YouTube recommends it because the stream is encrypted in transit to and through Google’s servers. Make sure your upload can carry the stream
Your connection’s available upload capacity must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare capacity and warns that other users or devices sharing a home or office connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream. Its network guidance says: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Run an upload speed test under the same conditions you expect during the stream, including typical household or office network use.
- Leave the recommended headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, rather than setting OBS output to the full measured upload rate.
- Avoid saturating the connection with large uploads, backups or other traffic while streaming.
- If practical, connect through Ethernet. A compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an optional way to connect a laptop without an Ethernet port; check adapter and OS compatibility first. Wired networking cannot fix ISP capacity limits, congestion or outages.
Connect OBS to YouTube without exposing your stream key
- Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel if it is not already enabled. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL/server address and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as functioning like a password and address for the stream; treat it as secret.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the applicable custom RTMP service, and enter the server URL and stream key. Use YouTube’s RTMPS option where offered.
- Start the OBS stream and confirm that the Live Control Room preview receives video and audio before making the stream public or relying on it.
Never post the stream key in screenshots, chat or public documents. If you suspect it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Test and monitor before trusting a continuous stream
Test using audio and movement representative of the real content. Check the Live Control Room preview, messages and stream health; verify that the stream is viewable by its intended audience; and keep checking audio and video quality during the test. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that OBS will automatically recover from every laptop, software, power or network failure. If you use a backup encoder, test the failover rather than assuming it will work.
For a 24/7 run, the test should last long enough to reveal problems that do not appear in a brief check, such as sustained heat or a connection that drops under ordinary network use.
