Yes. You can stream a video stored on a NAS to YouTube Live by making the file available to FFmpeg, looping and pacing it, then sending the encoded feed to YouTube with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. FFmpeg can run on a separate computer that reads a mounted NAS share, or on the NAS itself if its operating system, hardware and FFmpeg build support the job. The steps below use placeholders where your device and source file determine the right settings.
Choose where FFmpeg will run
“Streaming from a NAS” can mean either that the NAS stores the video while another computer runs FFmpeg, or that FFmpeg runs on the NAS. The first option avoids depending on NAS package or container support; the second keeps the processing on the storage device but depends on its software support and capacity. No single NAS installation procedure applies across manufacturers and operating systems, so do not assume a package, container or command is available without checking your model’s documentation.
| Approach | What it requires | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg on another computer reading a NAS share | A mounted or otherwise accessible NAS path, FFmpeg on the computer, and a network path from that computer to both the NAS and the internet. | That the process can read the file reliably; the computer can encode the chosen output if re-encoding is needed; and the internet upload link can sustain the selected bitrate. |
| FFmpeg on the NAS | An operating system and FFmpeg build that can run the required command, plus enough CPU capacity for the chosen encoding settings. | FFmpeg availability, encoding capacity, persistent-process and restart support, network throughput, and safe handling of the stream key. These vary by NAS model and software version. |
If you need device-specific installation or a reliable restart-on-failure setup, identify the NAS model, operating system and installed FFmpeg version first. Those details determine the correct package, container, service manager and commands.
Make the NAS video available to FFmpeg
- Choose the host. Decide whether FFmpeg will run on a separate computer or on the NAS. Install or locate an FFmpeg build supported by that host.
- Confirm the file path. On a separate computer, mount or access the NAS share using that computer’s normal file-sharing setup. On the NAS, use the local path to the media file. Confirm that the account running FFmpeg can read the file.
- Check the source and the workload. Note the video’s resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether its existing encoding is suitable for YouTube’s current ingest settings. If it is not suitable, choose compatible output settings and allow enough processing capacity to encode in real time.
The path in the command must be visible to the process that runs FFmpeg, not merely to your file browser or another user account. A share that disconnects, changes its mount point, or is inaccessible to a service account can stop an otherwise correct stream.

Get YouTube’s ingest URL and protect the stream key
- Open your event’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Use YouTube’s RTMPS URL when it is available. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes revealing it by selecting the lock icon in the Stream settings URL field, then copying that URL along with the key.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put a real key in a published command, screenshot, public log or shared shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.
The URL and key are specific to your YouTube setup. Do not use a key copied from another channel or paste a real key into a command that will be shared.
Loop the file and send it with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 repeats the input indefinitely and 0 disables looping. Put input options before the corresponding -i. The -re option reads a file input at its native frame rate, pacing packets for cases such as live streaming; it does not make an unstable NAS, encoder or internet link reliable.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-f flv "[YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL]/[stream key]"
This is a command shape, not a copy-and-run encoder configuration: the bracketed sections are placeholders, and the correct mapping and encoding options depend on your source and chosen YouTube settings. Replace the path with the file path visible to FFmpeg, supply the current URL and key from Live Control Room, and choose output codecs, frame rate, resolution and bitrate that YouTube supports. The FFmpeg documentation available with your installed build is the relevant reference for that build; online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly and may describe options newer than an older NAS package.
Set video, audio and bitrate for YouTube
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, which should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate, so there is no single correct bitrate for every source.

For one specific H.264 example, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. That figure is not a universal requirement for other resolutions, frame rates or codecs. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the exact output combination you intend to send, then select a sustainable rate for the available upload connection. A nominal internet plan speed alone does not establish that the connection can sustain the stream continuously.
- Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and the YouTube settings you have selected; avoid upscaling a low-resolution source merely to choose a larger output setting.
- Use a supported video codec and audio codec, CBR, and a keyframe interval that follows YouTube’s recommendation.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the intended stream. A static test image or silent clip may not reveal issues that appear with the real material.
- If encoding on the NAS or another host, confirm that it can keep up with the selected encoding workload rather than assuming that file playback capability proves real-time encoding capacity.
Start the event and verify the feed
- Start FFmpeg and check that it can open the media path, read the file and connect to YouTube without errors.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Inspect the picture and audio before making the event public or taking it live.
- Use Live Control Room’s stream-health information while the feed is running. Check the source path and the internet upload connection as well as the encoder output if the preview is missing, unstable or degraded.
- When finished, stop the feed and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a longer stream will be archived.
What an infinite loop does—and does not—guarantee
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input media. It does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a lost NAS mount, reconnect every network failure, or keep a YouTube event open indefinitely. For a long-running setup, process supervision and recovery need to be configured for the actual host operating system or NAS platform. Without the model and OS, it would be misleading to give a universal service file or restart command.

Plan how you will notice and recover from a stopped process, failed file read, lost connection or YouTube-side interruption. A loop option is not a substitute for monitoring, restart behavior, or a stable path to the media.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports that it cannot open the input file | The path is wrong, the NAS share is not mounted for the FFmpeg process, or its account lacks read permission. | Verify the exact path from the host and account that run FFmpeg. Re-establish the share or correct permissions before restarting. |
| The stream starts but does not repeat | -stream_loop is missing, set to 0, or placed after the input it should apply to. |
Use -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i and check FFmpeg’s output when the file reaches its end. |
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The ingest URL, key, connection or encoder output is incorrect. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, prefer the RTMPS URL when available, and check FFmpeg’s connection messages. If the key may have been exposed, reset it. |
| Live Control Room has no preview or reports stream-health problems | The encoder may not be sending a supported format, the output may exceed the upload link’s sustainable capacity, or the source read may have stalled. | Check the current YouTube settings for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate; lower the bitrate if the upload link cannot sustain it; and confirm the NAS path remains readable. |
| The NAS cannot keep up with encoding | The chosen codec or output settings may exceed the device’s processing capacity. | Check whether the installed FFmpeg build and NAS hardware support the workload. Consider running FFmpeg on a separate capable computer that reads the NAS share. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | A process exit, lost share or network interruption can end the feed; infinite looping covers none of these. | Inspect FFmpeg output and host logs, restore the failed path or connection, and configure platform-appropriate process supervision if automatic restart is needed. |
Copyright and YouTube channel eligibility
Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Use video and audio you created or have permission to stream, and resolve any rights issues before going live. Repeating a recording also does not itself establish eligibility for monetization or compliance with YouTube’s channel policies; review the current rules that apply to your channel and content rather than assuming that a technically valid stream is eligible.
