For an OBS loop stream, use a Profile for stream, video, and output settings, and a Scene Collection for scenes, sources, and global audio sources. Use Portable Mode only when you want OBS’s configuration stored beside the application—for example, to relocate the setup or isolate multiple OBS instances. Portable Mode does not replace either of the other two, and it does not automatically carry linked media files with it.
What each OBS option does

These divisions follow the OBS Project’s documentation: Profiles and Scene Collections (both dated 2022-01-14), and Running in Portable Mode (dated 2024-07-23).
Choose based on what you are changing
- Only the stream destination or output/video settings: create or switch a Profile.
- The loop’s scenes, source arrangement, or audio sources: create or switch a Scene Collection.
- The entire OBS configuration should live beside the application or remain separate from another OBS instance: use Portable Mode, if you are on Windows.
- You are moving the setup to another computer: plan separately for the media assets and confirm every source path works on the destination machine.
A Profile and Scene Collection solve different problems, so a loop setup can use both. Portable Mode is a separate configuration-location choice, not a third type of profile or collection. The OBS documentation describes these features, but does not provide a loop-stream-specific preset or tested recipe.
Set up a loop configuration you can manage
- Build the loop’s visual and audio structure in a Scene Collection. Add the scenes and sources the loop needs, then set any Global Audio Sources under Settings → Audio. OBS saves those global sources with the collection.
- Set the stream and output configuration in a Profile. Use the Profile for the Stream, Video, and Output settings. OBS’s Profile guide says profiles can be created, duplicated, renamed, removed, and imported or exported as JSON. Keep in mind that switching profiles will not switch the scenes.
- Keep the collection and profile names understandable. If you use more than one loop or stream configuration, name each collection for its scene/source arrangement and each profile for its destination or output configuration. This makes it easier to select the intended pieces independently.
- Test the selected collection and profile together before relying on the loop. Confirm the intended scenes and sources are loaded, and check the selected stream and output settings. OBS documentation explains what each saves; it does not certify a particular combination for unattended looping.
When and how to use Portable Mode
According to the OBS Project’s portable-mode guide dated 2024-07-23, Portable Mode is supported on Windows and not supported on macOS or Linux. In Windows, start with the ZIP build of OBS and unzip it. Then either place an empty portable_mode or portable_mode.txt file in the application’s root directory, or launch bin/64bit/obs64.exe with the --portable parameter.

In Portable Mode, OBS loads its configuration from beside the application rather than the usual configuration location. The documented purpose includes easier relocation and running multiple instances without cross-contamination of profiles and scene collections. It isolates configuration; it does not guarantee that a loop’s media will be available wherever the folder goes.
Moving the setup: media paths are the main trap
The OBS Project warns: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” A portable OBS folder can therefore open with a configuration that still points to image or video paths that do not exist on the other computer.

Before moving a loop setup, make sure the media is present on the destination and that the collection’s source paths resolve there. The OBS guide says to modify the scene collection JSON file manually or use a generic path common on all devices. A USB drive can carry a Windows portable OBS folder, but the drive alone does not make referenced media paths portable.
Optional startup parameters
The OBS Project’s Launch Parameters page (dated 2021-05-30) documents options to select startup content or configuration: --collection "name", --profile "name", and --scene "name". It also documents --portable (or -p) for Portable Mode and --startstreaming to start streaming automatically.

These are documented launch options, not a verified unattended-loop recipe. The documentation does not establish that a particular profile/collection combination, account login persistence, or recovery behavior will work in every setup. Test startup behavior before depending on it.
