To keep a YouTube livestream running during a home internet outage, move the encoder and the video source to a cloud host, then send the encoder’s output directly to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and give the cloud encoder its stream URL and stream key. This removes your home connection from the encoder-to-YouTube path—but only if the source is already in the cloud or can reach the server through a separate working connection.
What a cloud server can—and cannot—keep streaming
The encoder’s location determines which internet connection uploads the stream to YouTube. If the encoder runs in the cloud, it uses the cloud host’s connection rather than your home broadband. That can keep a prerecorded broadcast running while your home internet is down.
The source must also be available to that cloud encoder. A video file or playlist stored in the cloud can be used there. A live camera at home cannot keep feeding the server if its only connection is the home internet that has failed. That follows from the source-to-encoder workflow: the cloud server cannot retrieve a signal that no longer reaches it. A separate working uplink for the camera could solve that source-path problem.
This is about an internet outage, not every kind of outage. Moving the encoder and source to the cloud removes home internet from the upload route; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service or keep a home device powered.

Choose an approach for your source
| Approach | Best fit | Source requirement | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Prerecorded YouTube programming that should run continuously | Uploaded video or playlist | Cloud operation without managing your own server; one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with the first day free. |
| Self-managed cloud encoder | Custom workflows or users who want to manage the setup | Media file, playlist, or live feed independently reachable by the cloud host | More control, but you must configure, monitor, and capacity-plan the cloud host and encoder. |
| Gyre | Prerecorded 24/7 YouTube broadcasts | Prerecorded media accessible to the service | YouTube’s encoder directory lists it for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos; verify current features and terms with the provider. |
| Encoder at home | A setup where the home connection remains available | Local source | Does not solve a home internet outage by itself; YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. |
For a live home camera, first solve how its signal will reach the cloud during the outage. For prerecorded content, use media accessible from the cloud. YouTube’s encoder documentation explains how to send an encoder feed, but does not specify a cloud provider, virtual-machine size, price, or a particular command-line setup.
Set up a self-managed cloud stream
1. Make the source available to the cloud host
For prerecorded programming, upload the video or playlist to storage the cloud encoder can access. For a genuinely live camera feed, arrange an independent working connection from the camera to the cloud host. Do not rely on a home camera whose only uplink is the internet connection expected to fail.

2. Create or select a YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the existing one you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private.
The stream URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream YouTube should receive.
3. Configure the cloud encoder
- Open the encoder’s streaming or output settings on the cloud host.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
- Choose YouTube’s RTMPS URL or preset when the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends encrypted ingestion; the RTMPS URL can be revealed from the Stream URL field in Live Control Room.
- Select an output codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the cloud host can encode and upload reliably.
Do not put the stream key in public configuration, exposed logs, or shared screenshots. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key.

Set bitrate and plan bandwidth
YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Selected recommended encoder bitrates are shown below. These are recommendations, not guarantees of an uninterrupted stream.
| Output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube says total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% spare upload capacity. Apply that headroom to the cloud host’s actual outbound capacity, not your home connection. If you run primary and backup encoders, include both in the capacity calculation. Test from the host and with the source path you will actually use; an apparently adequate bitrate cannot compensate for a source that cannot reach the encoder.

Test before relying on the stream
- Set up the encoder and source well in advance. YouTube advises setting up at least two hours before an event.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the planned start.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that both video and audio are present and correct.
- Watch stream health while the encoder is running, and verify that the cloud host can sustain the selected output.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover in advance rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A cloud encoder moves the relevant connection to the cloud, but the host’s connection and the source path still need to work.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That figure concerns archiving, not how long a cloud host can run or a promise that a stream will stay online. If a continuous broadcast’s archive matters, plan around YouTube’s archive behavior rather than treating an uninterrupted encoder as a guaranteed permanent recording.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream stops when home internet goes down: The encoder may still be at home. Move it to the cloud, and make sure the media source is cloud-accessible or has an independent uplink.
- The cloud encoder is running but no feed appears in Live Control Room: Check that the stream URL and key belong to the selected stream, and that the encoder is sending to YouTube. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Check the cloud host’s available upload bandwidth against the total bitrate, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% spare capacity, and reduce output bitrate or quality if the host cannot sustain it.
- A home camera disappears during the outage: The camera’s signal has lost its only path to the cloud. Restore a working independent uplink or use prerecorded media already available to the cloud encoder.
- A backup encoder does not take over: Test failover ahead of time and include the primary and backup encoders in the bandwidth plan.
- The video is live but audio is missing or wrong: Check the encoder’s audio input and output selection, then verify both audio and video in the Live Control Room preview before depending on the broadcast.
