To switch what viewers see between podcast episodes without ending your YouTube live stream, create a separate OBS scene for each episode or show segment, assign scene hotkeys, and switch scenes while the broadcast is running. Use Studio Mode when you want to preview the next scene before sending it live.
Plan scenes around the podcast’s run of show
An OBS scene is a saved composition of sources. Make a scene for each meaningfully different layout or segment, rather than treating every small change as a reason to rebuild the whole show. A simple set might be Starting Soon, Episode 1, Episode 2, Break, and Closing. OBS’s overview uses examples such as Welcome, Desktop, Game, Break, and End. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Add the sources each scene needs
In OBS, select a scene, then use the Sources dock to add the items for that layout. Depending on the show, these can include a video capture device for a webcam, audio sources for microphones, images or text for branding and episode titles, browser sources for overlays, and media sources for prerecorded audio or video. The OBS Sources Guide describes these source categories.
You can reuse the same camera and microphone setup across episode scenes while changing the episode title, overlay, or media. For local prerecorded clips, OBS Media Source supports audio and video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, AAC, and WAV. In the Media Source properties, enable Restart playback when source becomes active if the clip should begin again whenever its scene becomes active; rehearse the behavior before the show. If you use a playlist through the VLC Video source, VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.

Choose how to switch scenes while live
Both direct hotkeys and Studio Mode can switch scenes during a broadcast. Choose based on whether the operator needs to inspect the next layout before it reaches viewers and whether the change should affect an entire scene or just one source.

Set direct scene hotkeys
- Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS.
- Find each target scene’s Switch to a specific Scene action and assign a distinct shortcut.
- Rehearse the sequence and confirm each key switches to the intended scene. Choose shortcuts that are practical for the host or operator; OBS does not make one particular key combination a universal default.
Use Studio Mode for a checked transition
- Enable Studio Mode in OBS.
- Select the scene you want next. It appears in Preview while the current scene remains live.
- Check the camera framing, episode label, overlays, and any media source state.
- Activate Transition to send the prepared scene to viewers.
OBS provides Cut and Fade transitions from first launch; other transition options and duration controls are available in the Scene Transitions panel. A Cut makes an immediate change; a Fade changes gradually. Choose the duration to suit the segment and test it with spoken dialogue and any media playback. Quick Transitions can also be configured with durations for use in Studio Mode. The OBS overview explains these controls.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- In OBS, choose YouTube as the encoder service if it is available in the service list. Otherwise, copy the YouTube stream URL into OBS’s server field.
- Copy the YouTube stream key into OBS’s stream-key field. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
- For a scheduled event, start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check it, then click Go live there.
- To end a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s documented process is to click End Stream and stop sending from the encoder. Confirm the current controls in Live Control Room, as button labels and behavior can change.

Preflight the scene changes before the episode
- Switch through every scene in a local recording or a private or unlisted test stream. Verify that the intended camera, title, overlay, and episode media appear.
- Watch the OBS audio meters while speaking into the microphone. If the expected input is missing, check the selected devices under Settings → Audio.
- Test whether each media source starts, continues, or restarts as intended when its scene becomes active.
- Run a short test with the planned output settings and representative audio and motion. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes before the first stream or recording.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube’s live streaming tips also recommend testing with representative audio and motion, verifying event access, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream.
Troubleshoot scene-switching problems
The wrong scene appears after a hotkey press
Reopen Settings → Hotkeys and check which scene is assigned to that shortcut. If several shortcuts are difficult to distinguish, use more memorable, non-conflicting keys and rehearse the run of show. OBS documents scene-specific hotkeys; an external controller is not required for this workflow.

The preview changes, but viewers still see the old scene
In Studio Mode, selecting a scene changes Preview, not the live output. Activate Transition to take it on air. Check that you are operating the intended OBS scene before triggering the transition.
A clip does not start at the beginning
Open that Media Source’s properties and check Restart playback when source becomes active. Test by switching away and back; if the clip is meant to continue rather than restart, leave that behavior disabled.

The microphone or other audio is missing
Check the OBS audio meters while the source is active, then confirm the selected input under Settings → Audio. Also verify that the scene contains the expected audio source and that it has not been muted.
YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Confirm that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube server and that the matching stream key is entered. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
