The workflow is: prepare an ordered playlist of episodes you have permission to rebroadcast, make it available to software on the Pi, create a YouTube Live stream, configure an encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then test the complete playback before going public. YouTube documents the ingest and encoder requirements; a Raspberry Pi-specific model, RSS automation script, or end-to-end command is not established here, so validate your chosen setup on the hardware before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. If this is your first livestream, activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A Raspberry Pi and storage appropriate for your chosen media workflow. No particular Pi model is confirmed for this job; check that the encoder and any audio/video processing you choose are supported by the specific board before buying or configuring it.
- An encoder that can send audio with a visual to YouTube Live. For a podcast-only broadcast, the visual could be cover art or another permitted still image, but your selected software must package the audio and visual into a stream.
- Podcast episode files or a process for retrieving episodes from a rights-cleared RSS feed, plus any artwork you plan to show.
- A reliable internet connection with upload capacity beyond the stream’s bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload bandwidth; see its streaming tips.
This is an encoder workflow, not a feature built into the Raspberry Pi or YouTube RSS. YouTube’s documented process is to create a live stream in Live Control Room and give the encoder the stream’s server URL and key.
Confirm rebroadcast and artwork rights
Having access to a podcast through an RSS feed does not itself grant permission to copy episodes, rebroadcast them, or use their artwork in a public livestream and archive. Confirm those rights with the podcast publisher or rights holder before building the playlist.
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can interrupt or terminate a stream. If you have a license for third-party material, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Choose how the playlist reaches the Pi
Pick a playlist source that your encoder can consume, and decide in advance what should happen when an episode is unavailable or the network drops. These approaches are implementation options, not validated Raspberry Pi recipes:
| Approach | Potential advantage | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Episode files stored locally | Playback can use files already on the Pi’s storage, rather than depending on an episode download starting successfully at broadcast time. | Confirm copying and rebroadcast rights; estimate storage for the playlist; define order and repeat behavior; decide how to update or remove episodes. |
| Episodes retrieved from an authorized RSS feed | A playlist-generation process could use feed entries to find episodes, subject to the feed publisher’s permissions and the process you build. | Check whether enclosure URLs can be downloaded, whether files are cached or fetched during playback, what happens when an item is removed or replaced, and how repeats are prevented. An RSS feed does not establish rebroadcast rights. |
The available YouTube guidance does not provide a verified Raspberry Pi RSS broadcaster or playlist script. Do not assume that YouTube or the Pi will automatically turn a podcast feed into a live broadcast. If you write or adapt automation, treat it as untested until you have run the full workflow and checked episode ordering, transitions, failure handling, and stream output.

Create the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your live event.
- Use the RTMPS address provided by Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; do not assume an ordinary RTMP address is encrypted. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health before making the scheduled event public or continuing with the broadcast.
- When finished, stop the encoder and end the stream in YouTube. YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours.
HLS is an alternative ingest method, not a required step for this basic setup. YouTube’s HLS workflow requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. It also has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Use it only if your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS preset and your workflow calls for it; details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
Configure the encoder and test on the actual Pi
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For advanced stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode a chosen combination in real time. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance alongside the encoder and Pi documentation for your specific setup.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your encoder can produce reliably and your internet connection can sustain, leaving the recommended 20% upload headroom. For an audio-led show with a static image, avoid adding unnecessary visual motion or processing until the simple version has passed testing. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a Raspberry Pi-specific resolution or bitrate preset.
- Set up a private or unlisted test event and use the same episode playback and visual you intend to use in the broadcast.
- Confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room and monitor its stream-health indicators.
- Listen through the test for clipping, silence, level changes, and clean transitions between episodes.
- Check that the audio remains synchronized with the visual and that the playlist advances and repeats only as intended.
- Test the behavior you expect after a brief network interruption, including whether playback resumes at an acceptable point and the encoder reconnects.
YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health. A short test can reveal audio or connection problems without establishing that a long unattended run will be reliable.

Keep the broadcast running and recover deliberately
- Where practical, connect the Pi to a stable wired network and prevent sleep or scheduled shutdown during the broadcast. These are setup precautions, not guarantees tied to a particular Pi build.
- Keep the stream key private and verify that the encoder is using the right event and ingest address before going live.
- Monitor Live Control Room during the broadcast when possible. If the stream stops or is interrupted, inspect stream health and any copyright or Community Guidelines notices before restarting.
- Plan playlist behavior for missing files, removed feed entries, download failures, and a dropped connection. Do not assume a playlist process will recover correctly without testing those cases.
- For a sustained match to third-party content or a strike, follow the notice and YouTube’s copyright guidance; a restart alone may not resolve the underlying issue.
What this Raspberry Pi setup can and cannot promise
The YouTube-side steps and encoding recommendations are documented, but they do not validate continuous performance for a particular Pi, an RSS automation method, or a complete command line. Raspberry Pi 5 may be one candidate to investigate, but it is not established as required or tested for this workload. Before using the setup for a long broadcast, verify that your selected board and encoder can handle the workload, then run a representative end-to-end test on the intended network.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to avoid keeping a Pi or other computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a prepared video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. For a podcast playlist, that means preparing the episode audio and permitted visual as an uploaded video first; StreamNeo does not take a camera feed or directly turn an RSS feed into a playlist.
