Copy mode preserves the existing audio and video streams; it cannot fix incompatible segments or change bitrate, frame rate, keyframe spacing, or audio format.
Check whether copy mode will work
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can present multiple files as one continuous input, but it is not a general-purpose converter. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Check every segment before building the playlist, and investigate unreliable duration metadata: the demuxer adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration, so inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts at joins. - Compare the stream count and layout across all segments, including whether each has audio.
- Confirm the video and audio codecs and time bases match.
- Check that the encoded resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe spacing, and audio properties are suitable for YouTube. Copy mode cannot alter them.
- If the files do not match, prepare compatible files or use a re-encoding workflow. Re-encoding is a different workflow from strict stream copy.
A single file already assembled in playback order avoids cross-file concat compatibility and duration issues. Use the playlist method when you need to sequence separate, compatible segments.
Get YouTube’s current ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key supplied for that stream.
- Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and network support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; the RTMPS URL is available through the lock icon in Live Control Room. Use the exact URL provided there rather than assuming a fixed address. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and RTMPS troubleshooting.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not expose it in public shell history, shared scripts, screenshots, or logs. The command below uses environment variables as a pattern; choose a secret-handling method appropriate to your system.
Build the concat manifest
Create a plain-text manifest in UTF-8. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, followed by one file directive per segment in playback order. For example:

file 'part-003.ts'Quote or escape path characters as needed. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer defaults to safe-path mode, which rejects paths it considers unsafe. The example command uses -safe 0 to permit arbitrary file names and paths; use that only with a manifest and local paths you trust. The safe-path rules and manifest syntax are documented in the FFmpeg formats manual.
Send the playlist with FFmpeg
Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL to the exact RTMPS ingest URL from Live Control Room and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY to the matching key, then run this command pattern from the directory containing playlist.ffconcat:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"This is a command pattern, not a tested invocation: confirm that the RTMPS URL syntax matches the value YouTube supplies and that your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. The -re option reads a file input at its native frame rate, which paces packets for live delivery; put it before the file input. FFmpeg documents -codec copy as copying streams without re-encoding. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
-f concatselects the concat demuxer, and-i playlist.ffconcatnames its manifest.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a?maps audio if present; if the source has no audio, you can omit that mapping.-c copycopies the selected encoded streams unchanged. Do not add video filters, scaling, frame-rate conversion,-c:v libx264, or audio re-encoding if you require strict copy mode.-f flvselects the output muxer used by this command pattern. Verify compatibility with the ingest details and FFmpeg build you actually use.
Do not use -re to throttle an actual capture or live input: FFmpeg warns that low read rates on such inputs can result in packet loss. Its role here is pacing the file input.

Match the encoded source to YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s current encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, recommends the following H.264 ingest bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. Choose the row matching the playlist’s actual resolution and frame rate, and test against your upload capacity. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube’s same guidance recommends CBR, video up to 60 fps, keyframes every two seconds (no more than four seconds apart), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. Because copy mode cannot change any of these properties, inspect the source before streaming. If it does not meet the requirements for your intended ingest, prepare a compliant source or re-encode it beforehand.

Test and start the live event
- Test with representative movement and audio before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing and checking stream health rather than assuming the encoder settings are correct.
- Watch the preview and status messages in Live Control Room. Confirm that both picture and sound arrive as expected.
- For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and use the control room’s Go live action when required; connecting FFmpeg does not necessarily start the event for viewers.
- When finished, end the event through Live Control Room as appropriate, then stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Troubleshoot common failures
The manifest will not open
- Confirm its first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0and that the file is plain text. - Check file names, quoting, escaping, and playback order.
- If paths trigger safe-mode rejection, use suitable safe relative paths or
-safe 0only for a manifest and local paths you trust.
The first segment plays, or joins show glitches
Compare every segment’s stream layout, codecs, and time bases. Check duration metadata as well: timestamp adjustment at each join relies on the preceding file’s duration. If the files are not compatible, concat demuxing will not make them compatible.
The file plays too quickly or timing is wrong
Ensure -re appears before -i playlist.ffconcat so FFmpeg paces the file input at its native rate. Do not apply this pacing approach to an actual capture or live input.

YouTube reports quality or ingest problems
Compare the existing encoding with YouTube’s guidance for bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, frame-rate limit, and audio format. Stream copy cannot correct a mismatch; use a compliant source or re-encode before sending it.
RTMPS connection or certificate error
Check that you copied the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS, and that network rules permit the required connection. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting page advises checking the protocol and URL, port requirements, and RTMPS support.
No preview appears
Verify the URL and key belong to the intended event, then check whether FFmpeg is transmitting and inspect Live Control Room status messages. For scheduled streams, wait for the preview and use Go live if the control room requests it.
