Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A cloud VM usually does not “sleep” just because your YouTube stream is quiet. First find out whether the encoder stopped, the provider stopped the VM, or an interruption affected the VM or its network. The fix depends on which layer failed: supervise the encoder process, review provider-side schedules and runtime limits, and monitor both VM state and YouTube ingest.
First identify what stopped
When the broadcast goes dark, check the VM’s state before changing settings. A running VM with no video points to the encoder or its connection to YouTube. A stopped VM points to a provider action, configured automation, or another interruption. A watch page that still exists is not proof that video is still arriving: YouTube says the stream ends when content stops coming from the encoder.
- VM running, stream dark: inspect the encoder process, its logs, and whether it is still sending to YouTube.
- VM stopped: inspect provider event or activity history, schedules, runtime limits, shutdown scripts, and orchestration policies.
- VM and encoder appear healthy, but stream is not: verify the ingest URL and stream key, network connectivity, and YouTube’s live status.
Do not treat a keep-alive request as a universal way to override cloud-provider stop policies. Determine the cause, then change only the confirmed setting or automation responsible.
Keep the encoder process running
A VM can remain available after OBS, FFmpeg, or another encoder exits. Run the encoder under an operating-system service supervisor or equivalent process manager configured to restart it after failure. The correct configuration depends on the operating system and encoder; there is no provider- and OS-independent command that can safely be prescribed for every setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Inspect the process and logs. When the broadcast stops, confirm whether the encoder is running and check its error output for exits, failed reconnects, or network problems.
- Configure supervised restart. Use the service-management method supported by your operating system to restart the encoder after an unexpected exit. Avoid an uncontrolled rapid restart loop; check logs and add an appropriate delay or failure limit if the supervisor supports it.
- Test recovery deliberately. In a controlled window, restart the encoder process and confirm that it reconnects and resumes sending. Test a VM reboot separately; a process-level restart policy does not by itself prove that the encoder starts correctly after a reboot.
- Monitor the right layers. Track VM state, encoder process health, and incoming YouTube stream status. A single “server is up” check will not detect every failure that can end a broadcast.
Check cloud-provider schedules and runtime limits
Google Compute Engine
Compute Engine instance schedules use a resource policy attached to VM instances to automate starts and stops. Review any attached schedule and its configured times; Google notes scheduled operations might begin up to 15 minutes after the scheduled time. This is a reason to inspect schedules, not evidence that an ordinary Compute Engine VM defaults to sleeping when idle. Google Cloud’s schedule documentation.
Also check whether a runtime limit was configured. Google documents limits from 30 seconds to 120 days, with an action that can stop or delete a VM. The documentation also notes that interruptions may happen for other reasons, including user requests or host events. Confirm the VM’s provisioning model and configured limit before relying on it for continuous streaming. Google Cloud’s runtime-limit documentation.
Cloud Workstations are a different product
Google documents idle shutdown and keep-alive mechanisms for Cloud Workstations, including /google/scripts/keep_alive.sh and background workstation.Start calls. Those instructions apply to Cloud Workstations, not general Compute Engine VMs; do not copy them into a VM setup as a supposed universal fix. Google Cloud Workstations documentation.

AWS EC2
On EC2, “idle” and “stopped” are different states. AWS says a running instance is billed for instance usage even when idle, while instance usage is not billed when stopped; attached EBS storage and other resources may still incur charges. AWS’s instance lifecycle documentation.

AWS says a new public IPv4 address is assigned in most cases after a stop and restart unless an Elastic IP or qualifying network configuration is used. Auto Scaling may also treat a non-running instance as unhealthy and replace it. Check the configuration that keeps your ingest connection stable and inspect orchestration policies before relying on manual stop/start recovery. AWS’s stop-and-start documentation.
Verify the YouTube encoder connection
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast in your encoder, then start the encoder. YouTube’s guide says the watch page is created and the stream goes live after the encoder starts sending. It also states: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Keep the stream key secret; anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one broadcast will be archived continuously beyond that duration; plan how you will handle longer-running programming and any transition between broadcasts. The same YouTube guide explains the encoder workflow and archive limit.
YouTube’s list of verified encoders includes CamStreamer, which it describes as an in-camera application supporting continuous 24/7 and scheduled streams. That is an alternative production path, not a way to keep a cloud VM awake. See YouTube’s verified-encoder information.
Understand what OBS can and cannot fix
OBS connects from the computer running OBS directly to the destination streaming service. OBS’s own help explains that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS is encoder software, not a cloud-server keep-alive mechanism: if it is running on a VM, it still depends on the VM, its network, and any provider-side lifecycle controls. OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.

Build recovery at the right layer
- Process failure: use a supervisor to restart the encoder, and verify that it reconnects to YouTube.
- VM stop: identify the schedule, runtime limit, shutdown automation, or other confirmed provider action. Change or remove only the conflicting control.
- VM interruption: establish what recovery your provisioning and orchestration actually provide. A process restart policy cannot recover a VM that no longer exists or cannot be reached.
- Stream ingest failure: monitor YouTube stream health and confirm the encoder’s destination URL, key, and network path.
These are separate recovery layers: an encoder restart is not VM recovery, and VM recovery is not a backup or failover plan. For unattended operation, test a controlled encoder restart and a VM reboot, and confirm the expected behavior at YouTube before relying on the setup.
Choose an approach for a 24/7 stream
Compare options on lifecycle control, failure recovery, interruption tolerance, operating cost, and the work required to maintain them. A self-managed VM gives you control but leaves you responsible for its lifecycle settings, encoder supervision, monitoring, patching, and recovery. Managed streaming runs outside a user-managed guest OS, but its actual capabilities and continuity terms need to be checked with the service. No universal provider, VM size, price, command, or downtime guarantee is established for every setup.
For a do-it-yourself cloud VM, include compute that remains running, storage and IP resources, encoder capacity, monitoring, and the time required to maintain and recover it. On AWS, for example, a running instance is billed even if idle, while storage and other resource charges may continue when it is stopped; check the applicable provider’s current pricing and your own configuration.
