You can run a 24/7 YouTube study stream from a computer with an encoder such as FFmpeg, but keeping it live takes more than turning on playlist repeat: you need an eligible YouTube channel, a scheduled live event, its stream URL and key, stable upload capacity, and a way to monitor and recover the feed. YouTube’s official setup guidance and FFmpeg’s documentation explain important parts of that workflow; they do not establish a tested, universal VLC-to-YouTube recipe. This guide shows how to prepare and test an FFmpeg approach without presenting an unverified command as guaranteed. The same setup principles apply to a study stream built from game footage or other original material.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says a first live-stream request may take time to activate, so enable access ahead of the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • A video file or playlist you have the rights to stream, plus an encoder computer that can stay on and connected. FFmpeg can process media from the command line; a local setup depends on that computer and connection continuing to work.
  • Sustained upload capacity suitable for your output settings, with headroom for normal fluctuations. YouTube’s published bitrates are recommendations for encoder output, not a guarantee that a particular home connection will sustain them.
  • A monitoring and recovery plan. A continuous feed can still stop because of a computer, network, encoder, or ingest interruption.

Set up the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the event and choose its visibility and other event details.
  2. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event. Enter them only in the encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
  3. Use the RTMPS ingest URL shown in Live Control Room where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the connection with TLS/SSL. Do not assume an example endpoint found elsewhere is the correct URL for your event.
  4. Keep the event in preview while you configure the encoder. Confirm that YouTube receives a picture and sound before starting the public broadcast.

See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, stream-key guidance, and RTMPS information. Interface labels and available options can change.

Choose output settings that match your video and connection

YouTube’s encoder-settings page, checked on October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use a codec supported by both your installed FFmpeg build and the YouTube ingest path. For a first test, H.264 is a straightforward choice where your build supports it.

Example output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance What to check
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended Use this row only if it fits the source, encoder, and sustained upload capacity.
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended Higher resolution needs more upload capacity and may increase encoding load.

These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not results from a home-network test. The table is not a complete list of available resolutions or codecs; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the row that matches your intended resolution, frame rate, and codec. Set CBR, use a two-second keyframe interval, and keep it at four seconds or less. Do not choose a bitrate solely because the source file has that bitrate: the outgoing encoder settings and your connection determine the live feed.

Prepare a looping source with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents looping options, including a loop filter configured with loop=-1 for infinite repeats. That feature alone does not prove that a particular file will repeat seamlessly, preserve continuous audio and timestamps, or reconnect reliably after a network fault. Its command-line documentation also emphasizes that option order matters. Because the right command depends on the source file, installed FFmpeg build, and selected output settings, this guide does not offer a purported universal 24/7 command or call one tested.

  1. Inspect the source file before the stream. Confirm that it contains the intended video and audio streams, that playback works from beginning to end, and that the end-to-start transition is acceptable. Listen and watch across the loop point; a hard cut, silence, or repeated pause may be distracting during a study session.
  2. Check the FFmpeg documentation for the looping method appropriate to the actual input. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes command options and their ordering; the loop-filter documentation defines the filter’s behavior. Confirm the syntax against the version installed on your computer.
  3. Configure the output for the selected YouTube ingest URL and key, video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs.
  4. Run a short private or unlisted test event before relying on the setup for a long broadcast. Check that the loop repeats, audio stays in sync, YouTube receives the intended resolution, and the connection remains stable.

FFmpeg’s documentation describes components, not a verified end-to-end recipe for every media file and machine. Validate the exact command and behavior with your own source and installed version before scheduling an all-day stream.

Where VLC fits—and what is not established

VLC can play media and playlists, but the available authoritative setup information does not establish a current VLC command for direct YouTube ingest or prove that playlist repeat will survive network faults. Do not copy an unverified sout command or assume that a local repeat setting provides automatic reconnection. If you prefer VLC, verify its current documentation for your version and test the complete path to YouTube Live Control Room before using it for a 24/7 event. FFmpeg is the more defensible focus here because its official documentation specifies looping mechanisms, though it still does not guarantee a seamless or fault-tolerant stream.

Test, launch, and monitor the stream

  1. Start the encoder with the event in preview. Wait for YouTube to show an incoming signal, then inspect the Live Control Room preview for image, sound, and stream health.
  2. Watch the unlisted or public playback on a separate device and network if possible. Confirm that the stream starts correctly, the audio is clear, the picture is stable, and the source behaves as expected at the loop point.
  3. After starting the event, continue monitoring the broadcast. YouTube advises testing the encoder and monitoring stream quality; a green preview at launch does not ensure uninterrupted operation for the rest of the day.
  4. Plan who will notice an interruption and how the encoder will be restarted. A computer sleeping, losing power, or dropping its internet connection can stop a local encoder. Do not advertise “24/7” as guaranteed uptime from a setup that has no recovery plan.

Plan around the archive limit and YouTube policies

A live feed and a single complete archived video are different outcomes. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a longer event will be saved as one complete video. If you need a full archive, plan shorter events or make separate local recordings, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before launch. Do not promise viewers a complete 24-hour VOD on the basis of the under-12-hour statement.

Setup documentation does not decide whether a particular study loop is permitted, eligible for monetization, or considered sufficiently original. Before streaming, check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your material and format. Use footage, music, and other assets you own or are licensed to use; having a file available to play does not by itself establish streaming rights.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
No incoming signal in Live Control Room Incorrect event URL or key, an inactive live-streaming channel, or an encoder that is not sending. Check that live streaming is enabled, copy the URL and key from the correct event again, and inspect the encoder’s connection output. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Frequent buffering or unstable playback Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating relative to the chosen output bitrate. Check sustained upload performance and reduce output bitrate or resolution to a suitable YouTube-recommended setting. Test the revised settings before going live.
Black video or missing audio The selected input or output streams do not match the file, or the chosen codec/settings are unsupported by the encoder build or ingest path. Inspect the file’s streams, confirm the FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder, and test video and audio in preview before starting the event.
Visible pause, pop, or abrupt change at the loop point The source’s beginning and end do not join cleanly, or timestamps/audio behavior do not suit the chosen looping method. Play and inspect the transition locally. Edit or replace the source, then repeat the full test; the loop filter does not guarantee seamless transitions.
Stream stops after running for a while The computer, power, network, or encoder stopped, or the connection was interrupted. Check the machine and connection, restart the encoder if appropriate, and verify the event receives signal again. Build monitoring and a restart plan rather than assuming repeat playback reconnects automatically.
Expected a complete 24-hour replay, but the archive is incomplete or unavailable YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive of a longer stream. For future broadcasts, use shorter events or make a separate recording and verify current archive behavior.
