Yes—a Raspberry Pi can run an encoder that sends a continuous audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live, but a 24/7 stream is only dependable if your specific Pi, encoder, power, cooling, and internet connection hold up under sustained load. The setup below shows how to prepare the music, configure YouTube, test the stream, and monitor it; it is a reproducible starting point, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi and power supply suited to that model and its attached peripherals.
  • An encoder that can send a continuous audio-and-video feed to YouTube using your selected formats and ingest protocol. The official guidance does not establish one third-party encoder or one Pi model as best for every workload.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the total stream bitrate.
  • A visual to accompany the music. It can be static or slowly changing, but the encoder must provide video as well as audio for this workflow.
  • Music rights that cover livestream distribution on YouTube in the territories where you intend to broadcast.

Decide whether you also need local recordings or archive storage. That affects storage planning but is separate from sending the live feed.

Clear the music for livestream use

Use original music or material whose rights expressly cover livestream distribution on YouTube in your intended territories. “Ambient,” “drone,” “royalty-free,” or “AI-generated” does not by itself establish that a track is cleared. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights on the provider, including music licensing rights for live content. Check rights for both the composition and sound recording, and separately confirm whether any archive or video-on-demand use is covered.

Enable YouTube Live and create the stream

  1. Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel. For a first-time activation, YouTube says setup may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
  2. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its encoder settings in Live Control Room.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into your encoder’s corresponding fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  4. Choose an ingest option supported by your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; support depends on the Pi generation and software build, so verify your actual combination rather than assuming every codec or resolution is available.

Consult YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for the current Studio workflow and stream settings.

Choose conservative video, audio, and network settings

Video encoding

Pick a modest resolution and frame rate appropriate to a still or slowly changing visual, then test that exact workload on your board. YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Use the current YouTube bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you select rather than relying on a stale command copied from another setup.

Do not assume a Pi can sustain a particular software or hardware encode simply because YouTube accepts the setting. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance paper reports measurements under defined test conditions; it does not certify a particular YouTube stream, encoder stack, or round-the-clock uptime.

Stereo audio

YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 for stereo, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and recommends 128 Kbps. Those are ingest recommendations, not instructions for routing the Pi’s music player into your encoder. Set up the software audio path explicitly and confirm that the encoder captures the intended mix, without silence, clipping, or an unintended desktop/system sound.

Upload capacity

Make sure the available upload bandwidth exceeds the total bitrate of the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; include any backup feed if you use one. Run a speed test and favor a stable connection over a brief peak result. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a speed test, while its network advice covers upload planning and stream health.

Prepare the Pi for sustained operation

Power and peripherals

Use the supply recommended for your exact Pi model and account for power drawn by USB devices. For Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C power supply; with a 5V/3A supply, downstream peripheral power is limited. See the Raspberry Pi power-supply guidance and check the requirements for other models separately.

Cooling and encoding load

Heavy sustained work can cause thermal management to reduce clock speeds. Raspberry Pi documents Pi 5 cooling options, including the Active Cooler and fan case, and recommends active cooling for best performance. That is a reason to monitor temperatures during your chosen encode workload, not proof that every stream needs a fan. Use the thermal-management documentation to choose a model-appropriate approach.

The published Pi 5 H.264 measurements are workload-specific context only. They do not establish how your encoder, selected settings, ambient temperature, peripherals, or software build will behave over a full day or longer.

Audio output and capture

Raspberry Pi documentation lists HDMI, USB, and Bluetooth audio across supported configurations; models 1 through 4 also have a 3.5 mm line-level output. An available audio output does not mean the encoder is automatically capturing playback. Confirm the actual routing in your software and listen to a test recording or private stream. See Raspberry Pi audio documentation.

Test the complete stream before making it public

  1. Configure the encoder in advance with the music, visual, audio route, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and stream key you plan to use.
  2. Start the encoder and open the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the event is reachable and that both picture and sound are correct.
  3. Run an unlisted test for a meaningful duration using the actual Pi and network. Watch for dropped connections, audio gaps, overheating, unexpected restarts, and log errors.
  4. Test reconnection behavior yourself. The official documentation does not validate a particular Pi-and-encoder automatic recovery setup.
  5. Only make the stream public after checking the preview and confirming the music rights for the live use and any archive you intend to keep.

YouTube advises configuring the encoder ahead of time, starting it before the event, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. Its live-streaming tips and network guidance are worth revisiting because platform settings can change.

Plan for long sessions and interruptions

YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive limit described by YouTube, not a recommended session length or a guarantee that longer streams will be archived. For a continuous channel, decide how you will handle session restarts, outages, local recordings, and any archive you want to retain. Recheck YouTube’s current encoder setup page before relying on a particular archive behavior.

A Raspberry Pi setup depends on several pieces continuing to work: power, temperature, playback, encoder, network, and YouTube ingest. Record the settings that passed your test, keep the stream key private, and check stream health and audio/video quality after launch rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees future continuity.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows no incoming feed Incorrect stream URL or key, encoder not started, or unsupported ingest setup. Recheck the values in YouTube Studio and the encoder, confirm the selected protocol is supported, then restart the encoder and watch the Live Control Room preview.
Stream drops or buffers Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or another device is using the connection. Measure upload speed during likely usage, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total bitrate, and reduce the stream bitrate if needed.
Video stutters or Pi performance falls The selected resolution, frame rate, or encode method may exceed the board’s sustained capacity; heat can also reduce clock speeds. Test a lower workload, check temperature and logs, and assess cooling and power for the specific model.
Picture works but music is missing or wrong The player output may not be routed to the encoder’s audio input. Verify the software capture path, selected device, sample rate, and test audio. Do not infer capture from the Pi having an audio output.
Stream works in a short test but fails later A short test may not expose sustained-load, network, power, or reconnection problems. Extend the unlisted test, inspect logs and temperatures, check the physical connection and supply, and test recovery after an intentional interruption.
Live stream is claimed or restricted The music or visual may not be cleared for the intended use, or rights may not cover the territories or archive. Review the permissions for both composition and recording and the intended live and archived uses before resuming.
