First identify what “crashed” means: OBS may have closed, OBS may still be open but disconnected from YouTube, or OBS and the computer may have slowed or frozen. Those symptoms point to different causes. Save the session log and any crash log before changing settings, then use the evidence to isolate a configuration, performance, or network problem.
Identify what failed before troubleshooting
After the next incident, note the exact time and what you observed. Did the OBS process disappear? Did OBS remain open while the YouTube stream stopped? Did the picture freeze or frame rate fall? Did the whole computer become unresponsive? Avoid treating all of these as an OBS crash: each symptom calls for a different investigation.
| What you observe | Start here | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| OBS closes and a crash log exists | Inspect the crash log and the final entries in the ordinary session log; test Safe Mode or a clean configuration and investigate plugins, drivers, and settings. | It does not by itself establish a YouTube outage or a memory leak. |
| OBS stays open, but the stream drops or dropped frames appear | Check upload stability, bitrate, ingest/server selection, VPN, and security software. | It does not mean the OBS process crashed. |
| Memory or CPU rises, frame rate degrades, then OBS or the computer freezes | Track resource use over time and isolate active scenes and sources; simplify the workload if performance pressure is evident. | It does not establish a universal OBS defect or prove that adding RAM will solve the problem. |
Save the OBS logs and session details
- In OBS, open Help → Log Files → Show Log Files. Preserve the ordinary log for the affected session.
- If OBS produced a crash log, preserve the latest crash log as well. Keep both files before changing settings or removing plugins; they can help connect the failure to the session’s final events.
- Write down the failure time, OBS version, operating system version, GPU, and graphics driver version. Also note relevant plugins, scripts, browser and media sources, and whether you started a scheduled or existing YouTube broadcast.
- Use the logs and the symptom together. A log is evidence to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself. For a suspected OBS fault, OBS’s crash guidance recommends logs and system details when reporting the problem: OBS Studio crashes on launch or during a session.
Do not make several unrelated changes before saving the logs. Otherwise, you may lose a useful record of the original setup.
If OBS itself closes
Read the crash log and the end of the session log
Look at the crash log and the final ordinary-log entries around the recorded failure time. Note any source, plugin, driver, or subsystem mentioned near the end. A named component is a lead to test, not proof that it caused the crash.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test a clean setup or Safe Mode
Use Safe Mode where available, or create a clean profile and scene collection, then run a comparable session. If the clean setup behaves differently, reintroduce plugins, scripts, browser sources, filters, and scene elements gradually. Test the same relevant workload long enough to determine whether the original failure returns; changing everything at once makes the trigger harder to identify. OBS’s crash guidance covers Safe Mode, clean configurations, and plugin or driver investigation.
Reports can describe very different failures. For example, an open OBS Studio issue filed August 3, 2026 reports a crash seconds after starting an existing scheduled YouTube broadcast on Windows 11 and OBS 32.2.1, with a final message mentioning YouTubeStreamCheckThread. That report is a distinct, individual case—not an explanation for a crash after hours: OBS crashes after starting an existing scheduled YouTube broadcast.

If memory or CPU climbs during the stream
Record the trend, not just the final reading
Note memory and CPU use at intervals, when any sustained rise begins, which scene is active, and which sources are running. Compare the trend with frame-rate changes and the time of the freeze or crash. The sources here do not establish a generally applicable memory threshold, or show that a rise is always an OBS memory leak.
Isolate sources and reduce load
Test a simpler scene and inspect browser sources, media sources, filters, and scripts individually. If resource use changes when a source is removed or replaced, investigate that component and its configuration. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance recommends leaving resources available to OBS and includes options such as lowering canvas resolution. Treat simplification as a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed crash fix: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

An open report filed May 28, 2026 describes rising memory and CPU use, falling FPS, and eventual system unresponsiveness with a complex scene on Debian Trixie and OBS 32.1.2. It is one user’s report and cannot establish the cause on another computer: Memory/CPU climb and crash after 20 mins.
If OBS remains open but YouTube disconnects
When OBS stays open and reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, investigate the connection to YouTube’s remote ingest server rather than treating the event as an OBS process crash. OBS Project states: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” The guidance is from OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024.

- Check whether your upload connection stays stable and can sustain the bitrate you selected.
- Review the ingest/server selection where applicable, and compare the session log around the disconnect.
- Check whether a VPN or security software could be interfering with the connection.
OBS’s troubleshooting page explains dropped frames, bitrate, and network-path checks: Stream Connection Troubleshooting. A dropped connection is not evidence that OBS itself crashed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify a fix with a long-session test
If the failure happens only after several hours, a short test cannot show that the problem is resolved. After changing one likely cause at a time, repeat a comparable session and record how long it runs, the active scenes, resource trends, and whether OBS or YouTube reports connection problems. If the issue recurs, preserve the new logs and compare them with the original session. When reporting a reproducible problem, include the logs and OBS, operating-system, GPU, and driver details.
